It depends what you want to do and your body shape and size. Im 5'9, skinny as a rail and one of my horses was 18 hands. He was bulit very elegently, which suited my body type very well, and that particular look was very "in" in the classes I showed him in. What are you interested in doing?

I am extremely interested in riding western and doing trails. I wouldn't say that I am extremely skinny but I am an ok size. I used to ride a horse who was heavily built and I didn't think that she suited me at all. I don't know how many hands she was.

Traditional western type horses include the quarter horse, and heavier type light breeds. You will want to stay away from the hotter type horses, like TBs. Some are ok, but the majority are a bit flighty. Work on finding a good match first for what you want to do-you want a pretty bombproof horse to be able to reliably ride on trails.
