I've had this stray cat hanging around my neighborhood for years. For the past 2 years she's hung around my house and we feed her. We never let her in, but she's "our" cat. Not too long ago I picked her up and she left a whole mess of little white bug (or bugs with white wings) walking all over my black shirt. I told my mom she had bugs on her and she bought the Hartz Fleas and Tick Drops from Walmart. I put it on her earlier this month and I've noticed since that she's been salivating. We came to the conclusion that maybe she was a llergic to the product so we washed off the spot where I applied it on her with baby shampoo (my mom won't dare to do this since she does bit and scratch now and then, and she is after all a stray). I'm not afraid of washing her, but my mom will freak if I do that. I jsut came across a post on this forum with a person using the same product and realizing it was poisonous. I just did a search ont he net and saw that indeed it's bad for pets.
I've seen Kitty (that what we call her) salivating way before we ever applied the product on her, and she's always shedding hair (like the top half of her, her hair is shorter, like she's been moving hair or something).
She's constantly scratching...I don't think the Hartz will kill her since it's been a few weeks since it's been on her (I would guess it would of entered her bloodstream a long time ago). I read somewhere too that salivating could be a cause of teeth problems...
What should we do for her?

THe hartz doesn't work, so don't waste your money. And even the advantage- the more expensive ones- can cause allergic reactions. My aunt's cat's head swelled up adn they had to cut his collar off from advantage. Just wash off the spot- don't kill yourself trying to wash her all over.
As far as drooling goes- some cats just drool- if she's eating, drinking, not loosing weight, she's probably fine.
She's scratching fromt he fleas becasue, once again- hartz doesn't work. Get some Adam's flea spray- it's he only thing I've found that is fool-proof.

Miss Kitty still needs a vet check if she has not been since she has 'owned' you.

She needs to be checked for internal worms, spayed, and have a general exam FeLV/FIV test and if that is neg I would give one FeLV and a 3 yr rabies vaccination. I would also consider one 4-1 or FRV_CP vacination since she will be outside. If possible not all at one time.

Salvating could be a mouth problem, somthing stuck something missing, some kind of bite etc. Could be a tooth/gum problem or it could be a underlying problem. Since blood is drawn for the above tests I would go a head and do a blood screen (CBC is best) to check her organs, etc.

It could be nothing or it could be something. There is no way to tell with out a vet check.

Yes Hartz is bad news. Advatage is more regulated as is Frontline. They of course can still cause problems but it is less frequent. I would check into frontline.

The reaction to the poison in the Hartz products happens within 6 to 12 hours. If she had reacted, she would have died by now. I'm very glad she didn't.

Are you saying hartz is dangerous? I just meant it was uneffective. Tell us if you heard worse! I found the flea spot on stuff not to work, but we do use other of their products! Ahhh!

Hi- demandabanana- btw- i haven't seen you on here before. You're the first other person from bama i've seen on here!

Go to www.HartzVictims.org

This is a major problem, and I have been doing my best to spread the word since I discovered it. Pass it on. -Amanda

Oh God! How awful! I feel so lucky! I just used it once on 5 of our pets- but out of five! It's amazing nothing bad happened! And to think- if the crap had worked- I'd still be using it!

Now- to think of all the retail stores in my town that need to be informed about this- Do you think it will do any good? Will my conscience let me decide it won't and do nothing?

Is there some sort of letter that can be copied and delievered to store managers, my mom wants to know. She's itching to stir something up. :) It's been more than a month since she rescued all the dying fish at walmart! LOL! But this time, I'll be right behind her!

Wow, finally, I'm not alone in my hatred and mistrust of Hartz. I have refused to use Hartz products for years. I had several tanks of fish die (as a child) only to learn it was their food. Then, we put a Hartz flea collar on our Rottie (also many years ago), and it ate a big circle of flesh from around his neck. And then recently my mother bought their flea and tick stuff for her dog, and it not only made her very sick, but ate a large amount of the skin off her back. I wish Hartz would go out of business. Or explode.

MY FIVE MONTH OLD KITTY, DIED LAST WEEK DUE TO HARTZ FLEA TICK DROPS, AND I ONLY GAVE HER HALF THE RECOMMENDED DOSE. I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN, I NEVER REALIZED IT COULD KILL. I HAD USED IT ON MY OTHER THREE CATS OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS, BOOKITTY WAS OUR NEWEST ADDITION. SHE WAS ABOUT 5 MONTHS AND 1 WEEK OLD, SHE LOVED TO PLAY WITH BABY BUNNIE, THEY LOVED TO PLAY AND GROOM EACH OTHER. IT CAME TIME TO PUT THE FLEA MEDICINE ON, I THOUGH JUST ROUTINE FOR SUMMERTIME, TO PROTECT MY BABIES, FROM THOSE NASTY FLEAS. MY OTHER CATS WERE FINE AS USUAL, AFTER THE APPLICATION, BUT BOOKITTY BEGAN FOAMING AT THE MOUTH ABOUT 15 MINUTES AFTER APPLYING, I THOUGH MY GOODNESS SHE MUST HAVE LICK IT, BUT I THOUGHT HOW COULD SHE HAVE, NONETHELESS, I BEGAN TO JUST WASH IT OFF OF HER, AND GAVE HER LOTS OF MILK, IN HOPES SHE WOULD VOMIT OR SOMETHING. SHE SEEMED AT FIRST TO JUST BE RESTING AFTER AN ORDEAL, AND IT WAS HER USUAL NAP TIME, SO I LEFT HER TO REST, I CHECKED ON HER A FEW MINUTES LATER, SHE WAS IN SERIOUS SIEZURES, WITHOUT GOING ON AND ON, IT WAS A HORRIBLE SIGHT TO SEE, THERE WAS NOTHING THE VET COULD DO, BOOKITTY DID NOT RESPOND TO TREATMENT, AND AFTER SPENDING NEARLY TWO HOURS IN STRAIGHT SEIZERS, SHE WAS PUT TO SLEEP. I HOPE IF SOMEONE READS THIS WHO WAS THINKING OF USING THAT MEDICINE, I HOPE THEY WILL CHANGE THEIR MIND.

SOOO glad I just read thru this forum. I have been adopted by a kitty that we will be taking to the vet asap. I bought a hartz flea collar and just promptly threw it away. This is a first cat to adopt us, we've been adopted by bunnies, dogs, rats, etc. so I am so glad they have sites on all animals. I must read up on everything you guys have been talking about for cats.

THANK YOU!!

that's horrible can't you guys sue hartz for killing your pets because that's what it is murder! They're just as bad as those psychopaths that go around setting cats on fire, twisted bastards. someone needs to teach them a lesson. What can we do to help throw hartz out of buisiness. Hmmmm...... any ideas?:kaioken:

Damn hartz, they're no better than the freakers that go around killing pets. They're murderers and they must be stopped how many more animals will lose their lives at the hands of these monsters! This can't continue we need to band together and do something, there's gotta be someone we can report this to and those of you that have experienced loss or injury to your loved ones first off i'm deeply sorrowed to here that and secondly i really think you should sue the twisted bastards! for animal abuse and false advertising it could be done and you'll probably win! May hartz go down in flames i wish them karma all the way!:kaioken:
