I went to the petstore today and picked up some chinchilla sand and a shallow bowl to put it in. When I freshened up Little Girl's bin today I put it in. She checked it out and did a very small bit of digging but she didn't seem all that interested in it. I wonder if she doesn't know what it is/what it's for and what to do with it? It was daytime so even though she had been out with us for a while, I'll assume that maybe she was just tired or something and see if she shows any interest in it tonight.

Is it a hamster or a chinchilla?

Oops! I should have mentioned that. She is a dwarf hamster....about 8-9 weeks old. That's her in the picture.

BabyBlues, you have to remember that they are most active at night and you generally won't see much activity from them during the day, they enjoy sleeping! So give it some time and she will get use to when you sleep and wake up and may start to follow your schedule. I'm sure you will see her rolling around in it in a few days. it's just something new she isn't too sure of YET.. :)

Thanks Tia. That's kind of what I thought too, but wanted another opinion..from someone more experienced. :)

I was watching her the other night (I was the only one home and I don't sleep well on nights like that) and she gets going SO FAST on her wheel! lol I was surprised how fast she had that wheel going!!
She doesn't seem to like her roll-about ball much. She runs around for just a minute and then sits in it and either eats what's she stored in her pouches or cleans herself...or just sits there. I put her in it while I'm freshening up her bin or changing her bedding so she'll stay safe. I'll continue to put her in it and maybe she'll warm up to it. I remember my syrians LOVED their balls! You'd put it down in there and they'd jump right in. lol
I have some new pics of LG, I'll post when I get them downloaded. I tried to get a pic of her next to something that could indicate her size (so I'd have pics of her as she grows) but she's too darn fast...or I'm too darn slow...not sure which...lol
Have a good night, I'm off to bed.

There's quite a bit of sand thrown out of the tray this morning so she must have spent some time in it last night. :)

:)...about the wheel thing, my gerbil star would go soo fast on his wheel, he would stop and nearly flip around it. but after he broke his pelvis he didnt go as fast, but he STILL ran in it! my hamster is different than yours, he doesnt run in his wheel at all. he only sleeps in it and stores things in it because to him it's a 'safe place'. but once he gets in his ball, he goes crazy! just to make sure the lid doesnt fall off i keep it hooked up so its like a closed wheel

she might start using it as a potty
Oh my...I hope not! That sand is expensive to be used as a litter box! lol If she does though, I'll know she's ready for a litter box. I looked at them yesterday and just wasn't sure. She tends to potty on her nest and doesn't leave her little house very often during the day, I'm not sure if she'd use a litter box. ??? I'm still undecided about the issue.

Hehe aww she sounds like such a cutie. Mine all use their sandbaths as a litter tray and a bath. It's icky. They're rolling around in pee. Well, as long as they're happy I guess lol
