Recently my dwarf hamster died (at the age of 4) and I am trying to persuade my mum to get me a new one, she isn't sure because she always ends up cleaning it out so I said that I will clean it out. My question is would 2 dwarf hamsters be as easy as 1 syrian hamster to clean out and look after?

I'm honestly not being rude here....if you didn't clean your one hamster on your own, then any hamster is too much responsibility for you and you shouldn't get another. If your mother hadn't cleaned up your hamster, what would have happened?? They're not toys, they're animals and need taken care of. Please, think long and hard before you decide to get anymore pets.

Yes i agree with babyblue.Think about it,and yes they aint toys, they need alot of attention and love thats what they deserve. If your gonna say to your mum you will clean the cage out then do it for a few weeks them stop coz you cant be bothered than no dont get one.You have to look after them the best you can. They deserve it.

I know you're right but I have been doing a lot of research and am going to take complete responsibilty for the hamster. I have done things such as prepare the cage and been to the pet store and asked for quite a bit of advice:cool:

Don't rely on advice from the pet store.. they're known for being useless.

As for two dwarf hamsters- you have to be very careful to make sure that the hamsters you pick are the same sex, otherwise you will end up with many, many hamster babies (and that is not a good thing).

Seeing as you've had a dwarf before, maybe try a Syrian this time. They're very friendly, and just as easy to care for as a dwarf.

However they do still require a lot of love, care and attention so think very hard before getting one.

Can I ask how old you are?

I am 12. BTW the pet store I go to is actually pretty good as I have never had any problems with any of my hamsters from there.:)

Well, I think it's a fine idea to get two dwarves. They are so sweet. But you really should clean out the cage by yourself, now that you are 12 (I understand why you didn't when you were eight and younger, that's a young age!) So anyways, what kind of cage do you have? Four years old for a dwarf is great! He/She must have had a wonderful life! :)

I will get a large wire cage that has a wheel and an upstairs to it and am making a play pen filled with tubes and other hamster toys if I get a syrian but if I get a dwarf I will get a 2 storey cage rotastak as well as a playpen:cool:

Usually those rotastak cages aren't the best. There isn't enough room for two dwarves (at least I think). Can you post a picture of the exact one you want to get?

Actually I've decided against a rotastak cage because just now a friend told me that his hamster escaped a lot of times from that cage and it is not very safe

Yes.Dwarfs shouldnt go in wire cages,Robo's can fit through the gaps.Wire cages are fine for syrians.

Or, you could make a 'bin cage'! These are really cheap and easy to make, and you can give lots of space easier than if you use a pet shop cage.

All you need is one of those plastic storage boxes. You can drill holes in the lid for ventilation, add everything in and voila!

Here's a pic of the ones I made just in case you don't know what I mean.

Mine are small, but you can get those boxes in loads of sizes! And they're only like.. £5 max!
