I put oil on my hamster's wheel last night to stop it from squeaking. The oil got all over my hamster's fur now! Do I give it a bath or what now?

What kind of oil did you put on your hamsters wheel? I wouldnt recommend giving your hamster a bath, it isn't healthy for them. If it's veggie oil or what not, they will be fine!

Something like vegetable oil, they'll wash off themselves. I hope it wasn't something worse!

If it wasn't vegetable oil then you could wipe the hammy down but dry him really well, or you could always ask a vets opinion.
I know someone from another hamster forum, their hamster escaped and it was really dirty, so they took it to the vets and the vet said to wipe him down but to dry him really well, because if he'd have cleaned himself the stuff on him would have upset his tummy.

It wasn't veggie oil. It's that oil you use on squeaky doors and stuff. My roomie suggested it now I regret it. I wasn't sure about bathing it because it still is getting used to my hand. So I should try to wipe her down with a soapy cloth? Then dry really well?

No i think you should take him to the vet a.s.a.p just to be sure.

Yes, if it ingested ANY of that stuff it could die, it needs a vet!

i dont know how old this thread is but..
is your hammie long haired? if so you could maybe trim the fur somehow depending on how much oil... i would ring the vet too and forewarn them and find out if there is anything you can give or do NOW
Try and keep hamster from cleaning too... sorry i got no ideas on how...
Let us know how you get on
oh and dont forget to take the oil can too!

Thanks for your help everyone! I took Pudding (my ham-ham) to the vet, and I was told that all she needed was a cleaning. I jes cleaned her with a wash cloth, dried her really well (she enjoyed that, yay!) and her fur is back to normal! ^_^ She is as energetic as ever as well. ^O^ <3
