I'm beginning to wonder if Little Girl is actually Little Boy???

Today when I had Little Girl out for some play time...I noticed that she has a couple of little bumps on her hind-end that I am wondering could indicate that she is in fact a he! I'm not sure if you can tell from a photo but I took a couple for some of you more experienced hamster mommies (or daddies) to look at and give your opinion.

So what do you think?? Should I be changing the hamster's name to Little Boy instead?? :confused:

Looks like a boy. My surefire way of telling is doing it like you would to a rabbit. Put your fingers in a V around the genitals and push down. If a penis pops out, it's a boy. If not, it's a girl.

Are you serious?!?!? :eek: The reason I say that is b/c when I asked the guy at the petstore to sex it for me, I saw him do that and I thought I saw a little something pop out and go back in but he looked up and said "yup, it's a girl." Thank heavens I didn't get 2! I could have had babies by now!! ARGH!!! I'll never trust them again! :mad:

It definately looks like a little boy, you can see testicals from the back end..or what look like testicals.

Never ever trust someone to sex your animal for you. They usually lie or are too stupid to actually know and just guess.

I have had plentiful missexed animals. Not just from stores but from rescues. Always learn how to check the animal for sex and do it yourself.

That is indeed a boy. Another indication would be a scent gland in the middle of the belly, just underneath the rib cage, but that's a boy dwarf if I've ever seen one.

Pet stores are infamous for missexing animals which is why so many unexpected litters occur. You're lucky you didn't buy a pair. If I were you I'd be going back and making a complaint.

Definitely agree with dwankrista, complain to them. And if the employee is there point them out.

Who knows ... maybe you can get a free boy out of it? Just remember to sex it yourself! Lolz.

Now that I'm a little more "educated" about hamsters, I'll definitely heed your advice and make my own determination in the future. :)
I should mention that I am so in love with my hamster that it doesn't matter the sex. That last message sounded a little rough, like maybe I didn't like having a boy...that's definitely not true so I just wanted to clarify. I have only had her...him...I'm not sure what to say now! lol Anyway, I've only had the hamster for 11 days and am so attached! :) I'll do a little more investigating by using your technique tonight during play time to be sure...but I'm betting you guys are right and it's a he.

I did look for a scent gland too but I didn't find it...he's very wiggly and I only have a very vauge knowledge of where to look for it at.

I'm definitely going to complain. Next time I'm over that way I'm going to stop by. I'm not sure if I want another hamster (since if they don't get along, I'd have to have 2 bins and I don't have that kind of room) but maybe I can get something free out it...perhaps bedding or something!

But pushing down on the genitals [gently] is the best method in my honest opinion. This should help, though.

All male rodents have HUGE testicles.... (sometimes they cannot be seen, but when you CAN see them you can't miss them).

I was interested in buying someones male rat, but I couldn't deal with those balls dragging on my arm haha.

Yeah, I thought I was just misunderstanding what I saw...but he was just obviously stupid!
Well, so far, I'm not sure what I'll change the name to. Formally, he may stay Little Girl here at home...depends on how well my daughter takes to the name change...lol. She's almost 3 though so she should hopefully do ok.
He's so fast, I might consider Speedy...lol But that's not very original. Do you have any suggestions?

She (my daughter) doesn't seem to be catching on. Although it's only been less than a day. I'll probly just let her continue to call him Little Girl. And I'll probly continue to refer to him as LG on here. We can just pretend that LG stands for Little Guy instead. :D

Oh yeah, that's a boy alright! I personally like male hamsters better.... I mean, they are more layed back, females are sorta hyper and nippy (in my experiences, Opie hasn't ever bitten me and is never that fast, Kiba has bitten me and she was always zipping here and there). But still, he is so freaking cute! :D

At the pet store that I go to, they have this one guy on the staff who is REALLY REALLY good at sexing hamsters. He actually picks the hamster up right in front of you and holds it by the flap of skin by/on the neck and looks to see if it hangs down or if it doesn't. That's what he did with Kiba and Opie. He also a TON about hamsters and is nice.

Lucky you to find someone so great at a pet store. Goes to show that they're out there...just if you're lucky enough to come across them. :)
I'm wondering...how big are these testicles gonna get?? lol I'm just curious...especially after reading the reply about not being able to have a male mouse b/c she was grossed out by the huge testicles! lol Anyone have a pic of their adult male that can give me any idea of what to expect?? :)

Since he's a dwarf they probably won't get much bigger than what they are. Syrian boys can get really big ones, though.

Its better for children to learn these things at a young age... Safety issues, more knowledge, more maturity. You don't have to explain it in a graphic way, just a simple *the more you know* kind of deal :p
