View Full Version : Taking out wheel?

Hi, I just read on the internet that it's wise to take out a hamster's wheel at night so it wouldn't get tired or dehydrated from running it in all night. Is this true? I'm questioning this because although Pudding makes a lot of noise running at night, nighttime is her playtime! So what should I do?

Hamsters are nocturnal, so taking it out only at night would mean they'd barely get to use it. I've never heard of this- it sounds dumb. If a hamster is tired, it'll sleep. And as long as you have fresh water at all times, dehydration shouldn't be a problem.

Bah! That's a pile of malarky.

I leave mine in at all times because my hamsters only run in it at night. I don't think your hamster is going to commit suicide on the wheel. It knows when it's thirsty and I'm sure it will take a water break if need be.

Yeah, that's a bunch of bologna! I remember when I took Kiba's wheel out (because it was squeaking and I didn't know that I could oil it with Crisco) and then I tried to go back to sleep. But then I heard this like weird noise that sounded like the wire top was getting scratched. And there I saw Kiba, she climbed up the water bottle, and her teeth were biting the screen top! She was trying to bite her way out of the cage to get to her wheel! So I put it back in and she was happy and started running on it immediately! :)

Oh, heh, thanks peeps. I just was not sure. It was a website set up by a normal person writing her own guide to hamster care.

Send her an e-mail and tell her to correct her information [or give me a URL and I'll do it].

Exactly.. if you learn the wrong information, you are not 'dumb', you are just misguided with wrong information.

i have actually heard of a baby dwarf running themselves to death on their wheels... and the vet did the hammie equivlenant of an autopsy(i know there's a correct term i just cant remember it) to find out what had killed it (just found it dead in wheel) but he said there was something genetically wrong like when they keep back flipping, and the poor little thing had a heart attack... i've heard of it ahppening before but this was the only case i actually KNEW happened... maybe that was what this website writer meant?

in any case i wouldnt take away a hamsters wheel over it... this happpened like the second time the hammie used the wheel... and as i said was genetic issue

Yes pixibubbles, hamsters flipping backwards IS a genetic issue and I am sure that as long as they don't have that, they should be fine with their wheel.

Sometimes, when my hammy Stevie runs in the wheel he goes to fast and holds on to the bars and loop-de-looped and when his back was facing the ground, he landed on the ground on his feet. Is that backflipping or being an acrobat?

This topic should be gone to the bottom by now...the question was answered, it's over. Stop posting here. Create a new thread for your immature little dealings.

Stevie... in answer to your question it sounds like Stevie is just being acrobatic.... the ones i have seen it happen in do it continuously until you stop them or they "snap" out of it. And i think stevie is a syrian right? sorry i cant remeber... so many hamsters lol... but its a dwarf trait... and when i mean they do it non stop i mean for like 45 min at a time... i'm sure your Stevie is a healthy happy ham :)

PS Bluepeter is a kids programme in the uk. if you entered their competitions and did well you got a Blue Peter badge... think of it like a gold star, onbly onbe that got you free entry to stuff lol
