Guys something awful happened today. I am still kind of in shock. I can't believe it happened. I had four of my campbells in a twenty gallon aquarium in my bedroom. I was feeding them when the phone rang. I went into my den to answer the phone. I was in there for maybe twenty minutes. When I went back into the bedroom I found my cat in the floor with all four of my hamsters they were all dead. I had forgotten to put the cover back over the aquarium befor going to answer the phone. I didn't see my cat run in the bedroom. I just started screaming and crying so hard. They were all so sweet. I was just watching them earlier this morning playing on there wheel. One would get the wheel spinning and jump off and then another would jump on after it and the wheel would never stop spinning. I can't beleive I was so stupid in forgetting to put the top back on the aquarium. I covered the cage with a blanket tonight. I can't bare to look at it empty. I miss them so much. I know I will have to clean out the aquarium tomorrow. It is going to be so hard.

I am so sorry for your loss! I was the cat's instict that worked there. I cannot imagine how you feel! I would never want to be in your shoes! Next time you will know that you should protect your little ones better! Maybe this was a accident waiting to happen. This is noone's fault, sometimes this is how things go. You didn't leave your hammies unattended on purpose and your cat just followed an instinct! I would really want to be there and clean up the tank for you!

Awwe, that is really sad. I'm sorry for your loss but they had a great home with you for a while and I bet they are greatful for that. Accidents happen and there is nothing you can do to change that. Just cheer up and wait a little bit then invest in some more little guys but remember to always close the lid for now on. It's cats instincts to hunt prey and kill them, it's just how it is. Don't feel too bad, just give them a good funeral and keep them in your heart.

Hamcat, I know it's hard but try not to blame yourself too much. If you have a hunt back through my previous threads you will see that the very same thing happened to me a few months ago. :sorry:
Although the lid was on, my cat got in while I was sleeping and killed one of my Campbells (Macbeth). It was the worst day. My remaining Campbell dwarf is now terrified of everything after having to see his brother killed.
The cat was just being a cat. I am so sorry that you have lost all four of your babies.
This is a terrible thing to happen, but one that does, unfortunately occur when we keep predator and prey animals in the same home/family.
RIP little hamsters :candle:

I am so sorry! It wasn't your fault. That um, sorta happend to me. I was afraid to tell PetsHub when it happend (I think 1 month ago), because I thought you all would yell at me.
But my Terrier mix Sparky, sort of pushed Opie's glass cage down from the table (he was in the basement because it was hot outside). And none of us heard the shatter. Then my brother (Thank GOD he came down when he did) saw Opie's cage on the ground, shattered, and he screamed to me to come down. So, I came down and I started crying immediately. Then I said, "Omg, where's Sparky?!" I heard her collar in the other room (the boiler room) and she was pawing at something under the boiler. It was Opie. I chased Sparky out, and Opie was just sitting there cleaning himself. Opie was fine (I mean, ANYTHING could have happend to him, he could have got a glass shard in his skin, or could have died from the glass, or Sparky could have gotten him, or he could have been lost...).
So that's what happend, I know how scary it is and I know how it feels to lose a pet/s. :( :sorry:

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Take time to grieve. You need it. Don't rush into anymore pets until you're ready. You might think it'll make you feel better but it won't if you're really not ready.
((Hugs to you))

I think for a lot of people new pets are part of the healing process when old ones die. The new one never replaces the previous ones or anything but it does help you smile and cheer up inside when you see the new one doing something totally cute. It also lets you move on a greive less, which is a good thing because sitting in that spot greiving about something you couldnt predict or couldnt stop happening and losing your ham or other animal just makes you sad and you wont be any better off. You just have to give them a nice funeral, tell them they will be missed, accept the fact that he or she isnt coming back and stand up and move on. You will always remember these animals in your heart forever and ever but there are tons of other animals out there that need a good home.
I was told this a while ago and I believe it 100% People were placed on earth to learn how to love, animals were placed on earth to show people how to love because they already know how, that is why they are never around very long. So cherrish the pets you do have because tomorrow they might not be here.
