I was letting Little Guy run around in the dry bathtub and he did something I've never seen him do. He jumped! It was the funniest thing...and he did it more than once! He jumped up towards the ledge. He was sitting, then he crouched down a bit and jumped...like a rabbit or something. It was too cute. Is that something all hammies do? I'd never seen one ever do that...it cracked me up!

Yes, hamsters can jump..lol. I only see mine jump when they are frightened, or if they want out of something such as a cage, etc.

hamsters jump all the time, i;ve had ones who do it off of high surfaces grrrr lol
usually it's when they are startled (like when they spot you watching them doing something they know they shouldnt be lol) or when they are trying to escape from somewhere... like a bath

My dwarves aren't really jumpers, and my previous Syrians weren't either, but new guy Casper is a total jumper! Unfortunately he likes to do it from high places, he has no fear. It's frightening! Lol.

I'm sort of new to the hammie business....so maybe someone can help me. I think that I have the craziest hammies in the world. Mine jump, but they jump over each other. And the strangest thing is.....I have them in a 10 gallon aquarium right now, and they act like they are trying to clean the inside of it all the time. They stand on their hind legs and scratch at it. Is this a normal thing for dwarf hammies? And I can't tell which is which when it comes to sexing them. I hope that someone can help me out with this.
Thanks in advance.

It is normal for hamsters to do the 'turtle dance' in tanks and run around jumping up and scrabbling at the edges. It is also a sign that the cage is too small, and i would agree with them on this one, 10g is far too small for one hammy let alone two.

It could be the case sometimes but my hammie does it when he's ready to come out and play...in the evenings when he wakes up, we get him out and let him run around in his ball and play with him...if we are busy one night and can't get to him right away, he does this scratching thing on the side. Once we let him out and play with him he doesn't do it anymore, he's perfectly content with playing in his cage and running on his wheel. My hammie is a dwarf and is in a 52 gallon bin so I know he's got plenty of room, it's just his way of letting me know that he wants to get out and play.

Haha, Mr. Whiskers never jumped, but he had a wire cage and used to climb to the ceiling and go across the top like monkey bars.. then he'd stop, hang by one arm for a while and then drop to the floor.. funny to watch, but a little scary. I kept the floor well padded, haha..
I loved my hamster, but I have to admit, I don't think they're all that intelligent, haha.. which kind of makes them cuter in a way.. I always saw my guy as an adorable, dumb, little fluffball. But at least he kept himself entertained :)

Ok......I got them a wheel......how long should I leave it in there? I put it in their tank last night and I thought they were going to kill each other over it. One would be in it and the other one would try to push it out, so it could ride it. Since I put the wheel in there, they have stopped with the jumping business. I think that I have the craziest hammies in the world....lol.
Thanks in advance.

My dwarf hammies aren't jumpers at all. One of them is diabetic, pretty fat, so there's no chance she can jump. Anyway, she's just a sweet, laid back, lazy, slow sleepy thing that eats food all day.
The other two aren't interested in jumping. They are healthy, but I think just too stupid to even know that they could escape if they wanted too... (no cover on the 10 gallon they live in, I want them to get enough air circulation).
