I was at Petland a few days ago getting some fish and over herd this lady talking to a guy who works there. She asked him why they dont sell Pits. He said that he really didnt know why and that they get their puppies from "distributors". I didnt say anything but when me and my b/f walked out we started talking about it. People are so ignorant. Places like this make me so mad!

Yeah I'm really disgusted by the Petland chain. Not only do they sell "puggles" and "labradoodles" but they sell really crappy ferret starter packs. These packs come with cedar bedding and a really poor kibble. I hate that place.

I went to petland to but a degu when I asked if they had any, first I was told no. The a girl in the back came out whispering to the guy. He then told me that they had 33 yesterday, and only one today. I asked "are they really that popular?" He then stated oh no its just that we forgot and left them out over night with the ferrets and they all died. I will never go back to that store. I did purchase the last surviving degu. I am happy to report she had her first set of babies and is starting to trust us :) Thanks for listening.Chastity

You should have saw their hamsters! All in one cage and different varieties and sexes. They are so dumb! The hampsters are going to kill each other! I learned that the hard way because stores like this told me that it was ok to have 2 males together.

I would have went to their central store and reported them. Tell them that I knew what happened to their Degus and that I was going to go to the media with it. They would get put out of business so fast!!! My god that is horrible!!!!!

Wow. O_o

My PetLand takes good care of their small animals and birds. The one problem I have with them is the puppies [mills, etc] and all of their mice and rats are in one cage together [no sex distribution]. Mine does not have degus at all. They do have ferrets which I love totally and completely but I never shop there as I simply don't like the store to begin with.

Oh, and they have a poor hermit crab setup as well.

The vet that I work for has a contract with a Petland. We take care of several sick puppies every week. They come in and get medicine even more often to treat them there at the store. A couple of years ago, someone from Petland had called and said that they had a puppy that had a seiure and quit breathing. I believe it was a chi puppy (this was before I started working at the office). They rushed the puppy over, but it was too late. We found out later why the puppy had had a seizure, someone who worked there had accidently dropped it on it's head. I have also been told emphatically by someone who worked at that story that they get all of their puppies from "good breeders". Yeah right. Some of the stories that I have heard about how they treat (and routienly kill) their small animals are horrible. I do have to say though that some are better than others, but all sell sick, overpriced, poorly-breed puppy-mill puppies and it makes me sick just to walk into one.

I have never heard of a petland until moving to las vegas, I didnt even see them in tacoma washington. I have yet to go to the petland but I will one of these days to see how they care for their animals.

Thats just awful that they would treat their animals like that... they really should be out of business but stupid people keep going into them and purchasing animals/supplies.

Its the things that you cannot see as a customer that are bad. Most Petlands are fairly clean, and most of their animals *look* clean, healthy and well taken care of. Although, I have seen some baby corn snakes being fed crickets, no bedding that kind of stuff.

I don't know how they are in the rest of the country, but here, there are tons of them here. And they are usually really busy. Unfortunatly, I really cannot see them ever going out of business, unless puppymills are made illegal. Can I hope???

I don't think that we can see them go out of business, their chains spread too wide. They have stores in the US, Canada, Chilie, Japan, and South Africa. I personally have never been to one but you better believe that I will never step foot in one.

I go in there to play with the ferrets and talk to my friend who works there. She loves her job and she loves animals so I don't think she'd stay there if they were that bad here. They're still new, though. Ours went up within the last year.

She's actually the person who works in the back with the sick pups [medication, cleaning up, etc]. The breeders are bad. That is surely agreed.

I never spend any money there though. I'll make the long drive out to our PetSmart before I go there. I really hate our PetCo, too.

The petland in my town takes horrible care of their animals. They jam around 100 parakeets in a bin, they don't have room to move! There are usually a ton of dead fish in their tanks. The reptiles usually look underfed and infested with mites.

They sell 'labradoodles' for $995.99 !! Plus, the puppies don't even have toys or anything soft to lay on in those tiny nasty cages. They also claim to get their dogs from 'good breeders'.. yeh right.

This is kind of a late post but i was just reading this( i havent been on in a long time). I was on vacation with my boyfriend and his family. We were looking for a place to buy a ferret from. We ended up checking out Petland and i was totally devistated by the visit. Theyhad a cage full of dwarf hampster. they were fighting and going crazy. there were three of them in a corner EATING one they killed. it was completely discusting! I also felt so sad for the puppies in there.. and couldnt even look at them. there were about 20 ferrets in a open-top cage.. there was poop all over and the ferrets were extremely aggressive.. not only to me but to each other also. it was horrible and i will never go back.

That is horrible!!

I can't believe the storys I have been hearing here, I did report the Degu story to the Michigan Animal Rescue and to Petland's Corporate Headquarters, but I haven't heard a thing back. They probably just threw the e-mail away. I am so sorry to all those that have had bad experiences there. I suggest we all boycot Petland. I know I will never shop there.

I've never been to a petland, and from this thread never plan on going to one! But it sounds like your standard pet shop whether they are called petco petland petdepot pet whatever they are all the same.

I shop petsmart, as a last resort if i cannot buy it online from a rescue who uses the money to help animals. I suggest we all try that and stay out of the pet stores!!

I've never been to a petland, I don't think that we have any around here. But from the stories I've been reading on here, I'm glad that we don't have one here. I like my local petco, their animals are always well kept, and they seem to stock more different kinds of supplies than any of the other local pet stores. I've also come across a few very knowledgable employees there.

I actually have a petland right down the street from my apartment. I find that your stories are HORROR stories, I never had a bad expierence at mine here in CT. The cages are always clean, stocked with food and water, and all of the mice and such are seperate and stuff like that. I never had a problem, although I don't think I want to go back now lol.

The Petland near me is OK (besides the puppy mill puppies, and not separating the different sexes of animals). They clean their cages every other day, there are little beds in every cage for the puppies, and they have like a bazillion employees who play with the animals all day... and plus, some of the employees love the animals so much, they'll even buy some of the pets there because they've bonded so much!

Buuut... there was this one old lady who worked there... I didn't like her. She tried to sell puppies to people as if they weren't living, but like merchandise or something... (I just liked to play with the puppies, and see which kind of breeds I liked the most, because I might get a puppy next year) She would always try to rush me into buying a puppy, and was like,"So are you going to buy the puppy or not?!?!" right after I held the puppy for like, 2 minutes. She said it so rudely. So every time she said that, we'd say,"No thanks." It was so satisfying to see the look on her face. =)

Some of the other employees don't like her either, and told us that she has a short temper. They usually tell us the truth about the dogs, like which one is really hyper, really mellow, nippy, etc.

The only bad instance with an animal there was a gigantic macaw who I tried to hold, and so he got on my hand, and then bit my finger harder and harder until he hit the bone... that hurt like hell.

And there was a little dwarf hamster who some little kid dropped into the gerbil cage... he was bitten up pretty badly, but he made it. The employees were really mad when that happened.

But overall, I think petland is kinda messed up. I haven't been there for 2 months anyway.

We have a Petland next to our dollar movie theater and a bookstore that I frequent. Sometimes I'll take my daughter in go in there and visit with the animals but I never buy anything there. I hate that they sell dogs and cats b/c I know they come from bad places no matter what they say. The animals and cages are always clean, and they seem well taken care of. That makes me happy . But I still don't trust them enough to give them any money. Plus, any money you give a good one, will still go to the company as a whole and that includes the bad ones.

Bingo! No one responds to hatemail..especially the powers that be....much of it come across sounding like the author has no sense, no manners and no education. If you want to make an impression, try for a good one. If you want to make your voice heard, be polite, use good grammar and be respectful. No foul language, threats, accusations or childish whining. Letters of protest should sound like you're trying to sell the finest Mickey Mouse watch to Mickey Mouse. CandyLoo

That is excellent advice and that happens all of the time with electronic mail and I agree with your opinion....but what if a person cannot become educated and as in my case cannot spell or use proper grammer?

I am trying real hard on the first half but dat secound part will take some time and people reminding/correcting me that I am well...incorrect...
so maybe that is why people think I am so ignorant...

wow ! All I have to do is fix my spelling/grammer and I am on my way to becoming a genius in my own mind..I meant time

Here is my e-mail word for word.

Hi

I was just talking on a pet forum with some friends and I heard a very disturbing story about one of your stores.

A customer of yours walked in inquiring about a Degu, she was told that this particular store didn't have any left. The employee started to walk away when he/she was stopped by another employee. The customer just happened to have heard the conversation by your workers. The 2nd employee stated that the day before the store had just gotten a shipment of Degus (33 in fact), but they were left out overnight and all but one died! That customer then walked up and demanded they give the remaining Degu to her so she could give it PROPER CARE.

If there is any truth to this I am appaled at the way you and your stores treat animals!! I will never shop at your stores!! And you better believe I am reporting this to the Michigan Animal Rescue.

Signed,

A concerned animal lover

CandyLoo needs to explain that she was making references to hate mail in general, and of course, she had no way of knowing the content of your email, Your particular email sounds genuine and from the heart. My only advice to you is to avoid sending letters of protest using anonymity. Sign your first name or a forum name eg "kitty", a concerned citizen, etc

...The ability to recognize one's needs for more knowledge is a very wise person. Regardless of how you peceive your lack of knowledge, you are not untelligent or dumb. Not Knowing is NO SIN. The SIN is thinking you know everything, feeling arrogant, being mean, showing disrespect and disregarding the feelings of others. None of which I see in any of the posts here.
