I'd say you could probably safely put a dozen of them in there without overstocking and for long term health.
Is it a standard size 20g or a 20g Long? What do you have for filtration?

If you're planning on getting both males and females, you need to be careful. Guppies breed like crazy and a population explosion can cause some major problems, like bad water quality, and as a result, illness and death...

You could have all males i guess, but then again it may be hard to sex them until they're adults, or maybe all females if you know someone who is good at sexing fish. I've never kept guppies personally, so I can't help with that :rolleyes:

for an easier and less prolific fish to keep i'd really reccomend danios. zebras, leopards and pearls are all very nice fish, very pretty and extremely active. Mine are good fun to watch. I think you could have a small school of about 8 in a 20 gallon, maybe 10 if it's a 20 gallon long.
