well i dont blame her, horses are ALOT of responsobilty and are really expensive to keep. I dont know anything on your background with horses, but how much do u know? Have u done research? taken lessons for at least a year? Have the money? horses need more than just place to stay and grass, there are soo much more to that, u will need tack if u plan to ride, saddle, briddle, saddle pad, e.t.c. necessary riding clothing such as, helmet, boots, and u will probably want to buy half chaps and breeches, or chaps.
Horses need Food, which includes hay, grass, and dry food like sweetfeed, or other energy foods, depends on how much exercise the animal gets, salt lick.
Vaccinations, vet checks, vet emergencies, trimming and shoeing, deworming, grooming stuff-brushes, shampoos, hoof oil. etc. Fly reppelant, fly mask, Leather care items such as saddle soap, buckets for food/water, muck buckets, bedding for horse such as wooden shavings, pitch fork, stable fork, hay net, some form of toy such as jolly ball. Horse also need blankets, like New Zealand for cold weather, and stable rug.
Horse trailer, horse will need shipping boots and clothes, halters, lead ropes, u will need to put up fencing, and build a stall with all accomodations to suit the animal. It will cost thousands of dollars to keep a horse, if youre not yet, u need to take riding lessons, do a lot of research on horses, I myself want to get a horse, but not yet, I know I'm not ready, I probably read 30 horse books already and read more. I volunteer at the equestrian center , where i take care of 30 horses , and do a lot-, feed, groom, wash, clean, take in and out, sweep, tack up, change water, help kids with riding, etc.
I've been taking lessons for over 6 months now, and I feel I'm getting better at it, but I'm considering of leasing a horse instead of buying one.
Look through helpful websites and do A LOT of reading, ask horsepeople about everything and good luck..

horses are expensive to get and keep. although lovechichk covered most the expenses there are things that she listed that aren't really a need. On a budget all u really need for ur horse is a fenced in pasture(mine is on 5 acres), feed(mine gets fed twice a day), hay. a salt block, a water source(which if u have a pond or creek that is full all the time, nature has given u this), a shelter from the weather(mine has about 1 acre of woods), and tack.
As for a trailer, usually that can wait. But mine usually costs me $40.00 in feed, $60.00 for shoes, hay usually runs about $2.50 a bale. I get my friends or my mom to trailer her for me. but u are looking at about $1500.00 a year for upkeep, not including the tack and vet bills.

that is if u dont want to keep horse at your place, a lot of people dont have land, but they board horses instead, boarding is a good option, but it is costly, the place where I take lessons they board horses for $850/a month, which includes, food, stall, pasture, cleaning, and vaccines. The owners can also use the arena and 2 trails to ride whenever they want to.

horses are a lot of money. All I ever wanted when I was growing up was a horse and my parents refused. Even though I plan on being able to give my kids a horse one day (I don't even have kids yet) I'm glad my parents never got me one cause I never would have known what to do with one and my parents couldn't afford a horse. Maybe you could just lease a horse instead so you have one to ride when you want to.

hahaha viel it's not that easy. I mean, I agree that she should respect her mom's decisions and all that... but I dont know.. Horses are so easy to love! And when you want one it's all you ever think about :flippy: But I know, I know... all the expenses and responsibility, it's not easy.

Hi,
I now own 3 horses. I just asked and asked and asked and finally I got one. I would definatly start out in a lease but work your way up to your own horse. Maybe help out in the local barn or something.

WOW 850 a month That is pricey It will cost me 195 a month for stall, turnout, feed, cleaning of the stall, and worming. Do you have a job? Maybe if you earned some money to cover costs or saved up some to purchase a horse your mom would see that you really want a horse. Though horses can be very expensive. Maybe you could muck at a barn to be around horses and earn some extra money?

get your hands on as much horse information as possible!
if you want one so badly, it won't be that hard
i've been reading books (fiction and non fiction) about horses since forever and just recently i started taking lessons.
just prove that you know a lot to your parents and continue/start taking lessons
besides, just being within close contact of a horse is reward enough!

I was in the same place as you but think about what everyone has said here. They are a lot of money and responsability and take up most of your time you won't have as much time to do other things you want to do because you will have to be devoted to your horse also remember that it's not just the horse that costs lots it's the on-going expenses too e.g feed, vet bills, equipment, worming, vaccinations, shoeing and lots more. If your parents say no they usually have a good reason for it perhaps they don't think your responsible enough to own a horse so sharing may be a better option.

If you don't want to do all the major work yourself like :: clean & muck stalls, clean & muck paddocks, get feed ready, organize tack, and all that other stuff, then you'll probably need a groom. Depending on how much you want the groom to do, and how much the groom charges, grooms can get to be very expensive. About two years ago, my parents rented a horse for my sisters and I. We leased her for the whole summer, which was really nice. The best thing about it? She was 81 in human years, so we knew she wouldn't run off. Good luck! :)

Well I just kept on asking my dad over and over and over again and guess what?!! Of coarse I was asking for 7 years and doing research and taking lessons and my dad did these little quizzes on me to c how much i learned and they would say things like: How do you perform a sidepass? and after about a year of doing those at the end of 1 he said "you wanna take a little drive?" and we went out to meridan where there was a little mare for sale at my riding lessons i always admired and Jessica, the seller, would ride her down to my riding lessons, just down the road from her place, and let mr take my lessons on her and my dad would pay her about 100 dollars at every lesson until the 950 dollars was payed off. yey. So it may take some time but your parents may either get tired of you for asking or see how hard you worked. Be patient and she'll give in. It is a lot of respondsability but take my advice and pasture keep your horse when you get it. It will save you thousands and make it a lot happier and healthier.
Hope I helped even though i probably didnt!!!

you know just as well as i do that a horse isn't just something you buy.
you also have to take very good care of it and give it lots of love and time.
not to mention deworming and other vaccines....
so that rule about having anything you can pay for may not apply to horses.
sorry if i seemed a bit harsh
good luck

Where to start..
I wanted a horse since I was 6 or 7 years old..I didnt get one until I had a job..so I board and pay for vet bills and worming and fly spray..and I have to have time to go out and ride and train and play with them...yes them I now have two horses after 10 years of gruling searches, heart aches and let downs...on average I pay 285 boarding which includes everything but farrier, and vet a month for two horses..50 in gas a month, 50 in carrots and treats a month..over 1000 for new tack every two to three years...depending on if my lil unbroke Ese' has anything to do with it or not.48 for books and magazine subscriptions a year. 160 for the spring vaccines including farm call and the west nile vaccine. plus then the unexpected costs...oh say your horse goes blind on you at a young age...You need a job, you need a stable commitment..and you need to remember that horses can live to be 40+ years. They do take a lot of work, even if your boarding..but if you work hard its a return more then 100 fold. I would wait until your 18 though or 20..horses will still be around. If you go onto colleged who then will take care of your horse for the next 12 years or more? Who will pay for it? I see so many people who dont have time...or have gone off to school that cant give the horse what it needs. I skipped going on with my schooling to keep my horse and I am now almost 27 years old. I have a decent paying job for my animals for the most part, I will never get any further in life then what I am right now...I dont regret a thing..but will you when your in my shoes? CP

Alright already sheeesh!!! Almost every girl wants a horse some time in their life and some arent successful but a LOT are. Give her a break!!! She just said she wanted 1. And if she thinks she can handle it and she cares so deeply about these great animals as we all do, I believe in her. Stop yelling at her about it because I think she already knows most of the things you're telling her. Why dont we all tell her something that she doest already know. Uhhh I cant think of really anything. I know she has been working on it very hard and knows about all there is to know. She's ready and no one can predict what will happed untill it happens. And yes they are expensive and yes you have to think a lot about money and she knows it isnt just something you buy but that comes second from you know you love them and you know you're ready. Just back off and simply wish her the best becaus I think she needs more useful information than "well i dont think you should get 1 because they're 2 expensive and just not ready blah blah blah!!!". I REALLY hope you get a horse soon and you both become very successful!!!
GOOD LUCK!!!

That may be true but money is a very important issue and if you dont have the money you might as well kiss that horse goodbye. She doesnt deserve to be yelled at because well...you do have to BUY the horse before you can really own it so she cant worry about taking very good care of it and time and love, vetting it, because currently there is no it, it is just a horse that you have never seen or never even heard of before that will be yours soon. I'm just saying she has every right to be really high strung on money right now because you have to have it in order to give a horse all that. Sorry if I seemed a bit harsh but I dont like you yelling at her for doing everything she can to buy 1 of these awsome animals and I respect that.
Good luck!

you should just keep trying. i know how hard it can be. the best thing that i can think of is show her that you are responsible and maybe take a baby step and take lessons. maybe if she sees that you stick with it and if she will come out to the barn and see how much you enjoy it she will be persuaded to buy you a horse. and while she is at the barn she will have to talk to other horsey moms and that will also persuade her to get you a horse too!!!!!
