1) 2 weeks minimum.
2) Lab blocks [not Kaytee brand]. You can also give seed mix with it [not Kaytee] and do a 50/50 mix like I do to make it balanced but not boring. However, seed mix is not a necessity.
3) They need a lot of floor space to play. They should have a wheel for exercise and hidey house to hide/sleep in. There are lots of things you can do for toys or you can buy some from the store. A toilet paper or paper towel tube is a great thing for hamsters because they like to hide in them and chew on them. A Run-About Ball is a fun toy for them because they get exercise while getting the chance to explore. They need to have things to chew on or else their teeth will overgrow and that could be fatal. Always remember to have water and food available at all times. Clean the cage once a week.
Also, sometimes dwarf hamsters that are too far apart in age or have not grown up together will fight and will not be able to be housed together so be prepared for this outcome. This happened when I tried to put Lucky in with my other 2 girls. Shinsei attacked immediately and full-force and Lucky is now housed by herself.
Be prepared in case they need to be separated and cannot be housed together. You never know what could happen.

Good advice from HandcuffedAngel. You don't need to know about breeding, because you have no need or reason to breed, so please don't do it.
Good luck with your new ham.

I smell a Troll.
You asked god if you could breed your hamsters?
How old are you?
You have no need to breed them. So you now have 2 hamsters of different sexes living together? Very irresponsible.

So, you asked God if you should breed your hamster, God said "Yes", and that's why you got a couple! Are you serious? How can you possibly breed without having a clue on breeding? What will you do with the babies? Come on, get yourself togethar and part them if they are male and female? That's what i thing you mean! I wish you ment something else!

WARNING: this post contains graphic details regarding hamster breeding and the deformities and problems that could arise. please do not read on if you think this could upset you. Anyone considering breeding petshop hamsters read this.
Nanner... did you know lots of really bad things can happen when you breed petshop hamsters?
if you got them in the same area then they probaly come from the same breeder which means they are brother and sisters which means they should not be bred.
if you are lucky the babies will be still born.
if you arent they will have no ears / eyes / teeth / legs and have to be put down. they could be really badly deformed and you will have to kill them or watch them die miserably.
IF you get lucky and the babies are healthy there's a lot still that can go wrong. hamsters are odd creatures and mom might eat the babies. actually literally chomp on them and crunch up their little heads. do you want to see and hear that?
Not to mention dad might dislike them and kill anyway.
if mom is too young or too old it's likely to kill her.
Even if she isnt she could turn on dad and kill HIM. and even healthy babies often die with no reason.
it's really quite dangerous and creul. i rescued a hamster and discovered she was pregnant afterwards. it was not pretty and i still have nightmares about some of the results.
please don't put your beautiful animals through this. it's too painful.

I'm not coming down on you but dont ever breed from pet shop animlas unless you can go to the breeder and talk to them. any breeder worth thier salt will have records for each and every animal they breed and will let a pet shop they supply have access to these records or will allow thier contact to be given out to new and potential owners allowing them to ask you any questions regarding the animals parentage. The breeder will also be able to tell you whether or not the animlas are related and whether or not they are safe colours to breed together.
with campbells which i assume is what you have there is a problem gene usually associated with platinum and mottled hamsters which causes 'micro whites' they are eyeless, toothless white hamsters which die at weaning becuase they are too deformed to survive.
Mottled animalsare obvious but platinums often arnet. Especially to the inexperienced eye as they may only have one or two white hairs.
I'm sure you ment well but this is not a good thing to do. I am not against breeding, i am a breeder myself but if you are going to add to the population then you need to do it properly and carefully.

I am a Christian..and in the Bible (if ur Christians) God said 4 the animals 2 go out and multiply! And fill the earth with animals! And I wuz just doing that!
I too am a Christian, and all I know is that God may want animals to "multiply", but he wants healthy animals out of the process. You got both of your hamsters, I am assuming, from a pet shop. You have NO idea what their genes are like, and for all you know you could be creating crippled and unhealthy baby hamsters that will suffer the rest of their life (however short it may be) because of your selfish actions.
I understand what you mean with the Bible and God wanting more animals, but God loves all of the living creatures, and I am sure as heck that he doesn't want them to be harmed, which is what you may do *if* you breed them.
AND, not to mention, there are TONS OF UNWANTED ANIMALS IN SHELTERS! YOU DO NOT NEED TO CREATE MORE!
Please, just don't do it.

Awww, he is a beautiful opal baby....
I sincerely hope that you understand what I am saying about how there is a huge chance of the mother, and possibly all the babies dying (getting eaten), or some serious health problem with the babies that euthanization is needed.
Because you got both hamsters from a pet store, you don't know their genes and the babies might end up unhealthy and deformed. Please, reconsider; don't breed them, there is nothing good about it.

ummm...ok...Well my Dad wanted me 2 breed them...and now that I got a male he is prolly gonna make me put them together! :( I hope not, but,if he does then I need ur help 2 pray that the babys, mom, and dad will all be safe! because I dont wunt anything bad 2 happen! So, we just have 2 trust God that He will let everything be Ok! Please & Thankyou! :)

Why on earth does your DAD want you to breed hamsters...? It sounds like YOU want to breed them just for the cute babies and you are "blaming" it on your dad. If your dad truly does want you to breed them, however, I thought that an adult would understand the serious consequences of breeding hamsters more than an 11 year old would.
Not to mention, if you do it wrong, you could end up with around 20+ hamsters!
From how you are presenting the problem with the hamsters and your dad, it really seems like you are the one that wants to breed them, it probably has nothing to do with your dad. He can't force you to do something that you know is wrong, therefor it seems like you are the one that wants to do the breeding and are trying to persuade your dad.
I just can't stress enough to you how awful it is to create more deformed hamsters in the world where there are already tons of them in shelters. I will not pray for their health, instead, I will pray that you do the right thing and not breed them. If you don't we won't have to pray for the mom, babies, and dad to be okay because they will be okay already.

Dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes, and they shouldn't be given anything with sugar. Corn has sugar in it. :)

can i ask one q: my hammie doesnt have corn, but is it just as bad for syrians as dwarfs? she doesnt have it but i just want to know. Thanks! (sorry about being :offtopic:!)
Moosley
11-23-06, 11:06 PM 11-23-06
Corn isn't so bad for syrians as they aren't so prone to diabetes. Personally my dwarves always have and always will have corn in their food and get fresh fruit.
But then again, i know they don't come from a line with a history of diabetes.
tvrodents
11-24-06, 09:55 AM 11-24-06
there isnt a high risk of deformed babies or destroyed litters if you know the back ground of your animals. A responsible dwarf breeder will check their animals regularly for diabetes - i check my campbells AND my winter whites even though many people dont as they are less prone. I have even checked my robos as they are a related species and theoretically could suffer from diabetes too.
All my dwarves get corn, if you know that they are not at risk it isnt nessesary to cut it out of thier diet.
If you decide that you really do want to breed (and please do take into acount what every one else has said to you) I will talk you through it. Make sure that you get healthy, unrelated, pedigree animals first though please :)
