As some of you know, I have been trying to persuade my mum to get me a hamster after Mopsy died. My dad has said yes but my mum still wont get me one. She thinks that I wont take responsibility of him. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to persuade her?

Do chores that need doing regularly like I cleaned the cat box when I wanted my mouse.

well, i kept asking my parents for a hamster, too! My situation was the other way around, though, because my mom said yes but my dad refused. My dad finally let me because when my turtle died, I was DEVASTATED. :'( I was so sad I wouldn't even eat! When my dad saw how sad i was, he said i could get a hamster because he knew i really wanted one. But first i had to keep my room clean for a while and do chores. You see, he said i COULD have one, but i would have to keep my room clean and do chores before i could get one. I had permission, though. So that is how I got Jazzy! My parents were the same as yours, they didn't think that I would take care of Jazzy, but I told them I would take full responsibility. I clean her cages every week and feed her and play with her every day. But anyway, try doing chores and helping out around the house without being asked to show that you are responsible, and maybe offer to buy the cage and all? I had to do that to get one, too. Maybe your mom will realize you are serious about being responsible about a pet if you pay the expenses. Best of luck to you!!! : o )

Dear Flopsy
Has the problem been that in the past you promised you would take care of your hamster and then once you got it all your promises went out of the window and your mum did the cleaning and caring after all? My guess this is what the root of the current problem is .....

You are partly right, I did clean his cage nearly all the time but sometimes my mum would have to nag at me, I think this may the problem.

okay, so do i have this right?? you dont have any hamsters right now and want to get one, but your previous history with your past ones are making your mom a little apprehensive because she doesnt think you will take care of it?? all i can say is to be responsible like everyone else said and do chores that arent your responsibility and do stuff without being have to asked. but don't stop when you get the hamster (if you get one) because that will be like saying, "i was only sucking up to you so i could get what i wanted." you have to keep doing things around the house and keep showing that you are still responsible. you have to be honestly responsible because that will transfer over to how you take care of your hamsters and other pets. Good luck, I'm sure she'll let you have a hammie when she thinks your ready for one!! :)
