I was just wondering if anyone knew how much it costs generally to put a hamster to sleep at the vets. After I found my hamster's lump on his neck today (which I will be taking him to the vet for) I've been thinking about how old he is (he's about 22 months old) and future problems he may face and I just want to be prepared for when he someday doesn't have quality of life. I live in New York, any help would be welcome.

i'm sorry i really dont know hunny. i'm in England and the system is completely diferent here. i think it depends on the vet. personally i know mine doesnt charge... mostly coz he's a really good guy and an animal lover himself so understands the pain and guilt that it can cause.

Awww, You're so lucky to have found such a sweet vet! Thank you for your response. I hope I find a good vet for my little guy right now, I'm contacting vets as I type this, trying to find a good one that takes care of hammies. :)

I live in New Jersey and the exotic vets here are expensive. When I had to put my hamster down it was $50.00. Most of the vet fees here just to walk in the door is anywhere from 85-125, plus anything else your exotic needs to do or have done. But, it is generally 50.00 here for an exotic to be put down.

I'm also lucky, one of my friend's mom's is a vet and she takes care of most of my pets for minimal cost, and I know she would put my animals down for free, she's just like pixibubbles vet, actually cares about the animals she's treating and not in it for the money! Best of luck to you and your hammie at the vet! Praying for good news......Keep us posted! :)

£125 $?!?! OMG... i didnt realise they were so bad stateside. That's awful! the last vet i went to charged me about £13... and that was out of hours assessment AND treatment. Guess i'm lucky here... a lot of vets in coventry don't consider hammies "exotic" anymore.

My local vet surgeries (all five of them) charge a minimum of £30 to have an animal put to sleep. Its disgusting. A small animal consultation is between £25 and £32 depending on the which practice you go to but our cheapest one isnt the best so its off to the dearer one I have to go. This is one of the many reasons that I have little respect for vets anymore. Most (but not all) are only interested in the money.

£32 quid a consultation!?!?!
Kat, Depending on where you are in Bucks there is a very good vet in Hayes (the north west london one!) one who i would reccomend. i never had any issues and they are reasonable guys. they dont overcharge me and tend to be really good about on going conditions. their out of hours is a bit kak but they've never charged me to put down, and are incredibly sympathetic and kind. one of the vets there also specialises in small furries as he is a breeder himself. i havne't used them in about a year as i moved to coventry, but he's patched up my moms dog after a run in with a mean kitty recently.
the postcode would be UB4

The problem is, I live an hour from NYC...so everything here in New Jersey is expensive....just like New York...This includes doctors and houseing.

It may depend on the relationship you have with the vet. My vet would probably waive the euthanasia fee because I bring all my animals to them. However, to a 'random' vet you just show up to euthanize, they have no client relationship with you.

Im more High wycombe way so thats quite a way from me and I dont drive but if the need arose I'm sure I could wrangle a lift with some one. Thankyou for passing that on, its very helpful!
