What are the best types/styles of cages for a dwarf hamster?

I personally think that the best types of cages for dwarves are either 10+ gallon tanks, or bin cages. Anything else that has a lot of tubing or the Critter Trails makes it hard for the dwarf to move around in because the tubes are too big and it's hard for them to climb up them, not to mention you would need to connect at least two critter trails together to make it adequate for a pair of dwarves to live in.

Go for a bin. My dwarves prefer bins to wired cages as they enjoy the running room more than climbing. The bigger the bin the better.

You mean plastic bins? The kind you pack things away in and stuff like that? Storage bins? What about a top?

Here is a site on how to construct one:

I actually picked up one that is high enough not to need a cover and my Syrian adores it. My dwarves love bins as well as they need the floor space.
They are much sturdier, lighter, cheaper, roomier and easier to clean than tanks. :)

I used to use bins, but I swtched to a 10 gallon with a large topper for the girls, but bins are neat and easy to clean.

Do you have to do all those things to it? Can't you just leave it as a normal bin?

No, the least you can do is drill holes high enough on the sides that they won't encourage chewing, and a couple on the top. That website that was given is an excellent one on how to make bins. I would use it if I were you! Good luck! :)

No, you do not have to do all of those things to it and leaving it as a plain bin is fine as long as you provide ventilation. :)
