 But I'm afraid I am! I've decided..........to breed Faline to Rahja. I've been thinking about it for a long time, but I've really wanted to adopt. Well, my local APL doesn't have any available (can you believe there has only been 73 hammies brought in this year?! How cool is that??!!). And I really want some new faces around! Don't worry though, I'm keeping all the babies, although my best friend wants one, she already has 3 of her own, well, anyways, I just thought I'd share it with ya'll and keep you posted on when they come. I'm going to wait until after Christmas and everything has calmed down so Faline can have a easy pregnancy without any distractions. :)

Do you know their genetic background?
Do you know how to breed them?
Do you have enough money?
Do you have enough room?

Are you just breeding them because you can't adopt any more? That's not exactly a good reason....

I really don't think you should, because you are breeding them for the wrong reasons.

If you know their genetic background, however, that's different.

Of course I know their backgrounds, I would NEVER breed if I didn't!! I got Rahja and Faline from VERY reputable breeders and I adopted Jessa. I actually traveled to Columbus (it's like a 7 hour drive from where I live) to get Rahja, and I got Faline from another breeder in PA. And yes to all the other questions too, :).

Where will the offspring go? You should ALWAYS have a waiting list before you breed.

Why are you breeding? To actually improve hamsters, or just because you can? I think you should rescue.. you seem like you really want to. It will be helping the population, rather than add to it.

Sounds good to me :)

I aint gonna do the OMG never act... coz frankly from everything i've read from you you know what you're talking about and clearly love your hammies to bits.

What are Faline and Rahja? i know they're dwarves but you get different types right?

If the breeder is reputable, you might want to contact them first. They may have a contract stating that adopters can't breed. Reputable breeder or not, not all hammies from a litter are breeding quality. Most likely the breeder kept the quality ones for her/himself, to continue the line. They'll also know if any genetic issues sprang up in the parents or siblings. Just because they're from a good breeder and good line, doesn't mean they're breed quality. I had (foster) gerbils from EXCELLENT lines and breeders, including show winners. The babies born at my house were rehomed, but a large percentage of them started having seizures after a few months, and any reputable breeder would not have bred from this line anymore, show winners or not.

I'm keeping all of the offspring, but my best friend might want one, she has three campbell's already, so she knows hamsters and he/she would be going to a good home. The breeders that I got Faline and Rahja from both show hammies and I have contacted them to make sure there was nothing that would be even the tiniest of concerns, and they both said that they were both okay to breed. I also asked for both of their parents and grandparents and also sibling backgrounds and genetics, they will fax them over to me sometime today I think. I have also had both hammies checked THOROUGHLY by a reputable vet, and she said they are excellent condition and that they are perfectly heathly to breed.

I would NEVER risk my hamsters health for ANYTHING, so if I didn't think that both Faline and Rahja would be okay, I definitely would not do it. I only wants what's best for my hammies, that's why I adopted Jessa. She was a Christmas present for some little girl, but yeah, you guessed it, she ended up at the APL about 2 months later. When I adopted her she was in a crittertrail mini WITH NO WHEEL. It made me cry to see her staring at me with those loving eyes asking me, why did they do this to me? She the most affectionate hamster I have ever had, and I've had quite a few. Well, anyways, I know this is a long post, but just had to get that offa my chest! ;)

hey there!
May I ask what colour your hams are? I am a breeder myself and will be able to tell you what babies to expect and whether or not it is a 'safe' breeding. If you can give me a little more background info (e.g. grandparents colours etc) it would really help.

Rahja is a opal and Faline is a black. I'm still waiting for the papers on their parents, grandparents, and siblings. I knew what colors everybody was when I got them, but I seem to have forgotten. And it's sooo (not) funny how neither breeder is answering their phones right now:rolls eyes:. Hopefully I'll get the papers soon so I can make sure everything will be okay. I think one of the best parts will be figuring out the colors of the babies, so I can't wait! :)
