How can you tell if your hamster's nails are too long? What should I do?

Get him a sand block...so he can scratch his nail on it, then you wont have to worry.

You can let him run on sand paper for a while, but just make sure he isn't trying to eat it and DON'T put it in his cage. You can also clip them with regular nail clippers. I have also heard of people putting rocks under their water bottle, and eventually that is supposed to wear them down. Good Luck! :)

The above methods sometimes were but are better for prevention rather than cure. Your best pet is to clip them with nail clippers. Hold the hamster up to the light and look 'through' its claws. You will be able to see the pink blood vessel - the 'quick' running some way down the nail. so long as you dont cut this you will not harm your ham

lol... that sweetie is why i'm glad i've never had to trim nails. some hamsters will freeze if you blow gently on their face. i cut my birds nails by calling her to the cage side. she will cling to the cage bars and let me trim there. dunno how successful that will be with a hammie tho!

A sanding block you can buy almost anywhere, try home depot or rona...walmart and other places. Trimming a hamsters nails is very hard, you may want to consider a vet visit if you cant.
