Food and water bowls, litter box, food (not the grocery brand kind,) litter scooper, brush, nail clippers, scratching post. You can omit the last two if the cat has been declawed. And don't forget plenty of toys!!!!!

Good luck on the new addition!!!

If I forgot anything here I am sure another member will help you out!!!

Hello again Allyce, and again welcome!

There are many things you should consider before getting a cat, especially an older cat of 12!

Can you pay for hefty vet bills when the cat gets ill? Since this cat is older, she most likely will be going to vet often.

Cats should be fed a high quality diet.. the first ingredient in the food should be a meat. Cats are Carnivores. Grocery store bought foods, and most pet store foods should be avoided. You may be able to find Chicken Soup For the cat lovers soul at your local feed store. That is a good brand, I feed it to my cats themself.

I am assuming the cat will already be neutered since its coming from a shelter?

Since you live on a farm I am assuming, since you have a pony, will the cat be inside/outside, outside, or strictly inside? Outside is very dangerous for a cat, especially since you go fox hunting so would assume you have foxes and other large predators..So if i were you, I would make your new cat strictly indoor.

Cat trees, scratchers, toys, are all great luxaries cats enjoy! :)

Definitely a cat box..its actually recommended to have more than one. And since you will be having an older cat, beware of the cat making mistakes outside the litter box, its only normal.

Cat litter, its best to avoid the clay kind, and use the yesterdays news, or other paper based kind. I use Fresh Step with carbon (I think it IS a clay based kind) but with my large number of cats, it keeps the odor down.

Good Luck with your new kitty! And don't forget to post lots of pictures.

All i asked what was i needed to buy
Not the third dergee about if i have the money etc

kittykat05
12-13-06, 10:11 AM 12-13-06
She wasn't giving you the third degree about $$$

All she said was that if this cat you are getting gets sick, the bills will be big. So it is great to have an extra savings account, for your cat!!! Most everyone here does.

If you can't handle someone giving you advice then you shouldn't have asked.

there is such a thing called insurance

kittykat05
12-13-06, 10:13 AM 12-13-06
Well then you won't have to worry about it. Just say that and don't go off the deep end when someone says that vet bills will be expensive.

XxAllycexX
12-13-06, 10:22 AM 12-13-06
Yes i know vet bills are expensive condisering we spend just around 5k on our dog as she had liver shunt. And before you say about the dog she was put to sleep in september

kittykat05
12-13-06, 10:26 AM 12-13-06
I wasn't going to say anything about your dog. I am sorry he passed.

You came on here asking for information and you jump on the second person giving help. I don't understand why you would do that. I think that you need to realize that this is a forum, and when people type things, it may come across differently than the writer wanted it to. If you think you are being insulted, ask first before you scream down an innocent persons throat.

That is not the way to make friends here and PH.

12-13-06, 10:27 AM 12-13-06
Who said i wanted friends on an internet forum? i go on other horse based forums and have friends on there

XxAllycexX
12-13-06, 10:55 AM 12-13-06

BY GOING ON AND ON ABOUT VET COSTS AS IF I COULDNT AFFORD THEM

12-13-06, 10:57 AM 12-13-06
She wasn't going on and on about how the vets cost.

She said one thing!!!!!

tiger: I agree, I don't even know why I am going on and on.

tigereize
12-13-06, 10:59 AM 12-13-06
the first thing to remember about this forum is that people here are out for the well being of the cat... whether you end up taking it or not. I'm not saying that she was trying to persuade you other wise... I see vet bills first hand everyday and it is 100% true that older cats go to the vet more often and have higher vet bills... when you have older pets, you have to have bloodwork done prior to procedures, which is an added cost. Older cats tend to have urinary problems, weight problems, risks of cancer, etc etc. She was just making sure that you understood that you may potentially have to experience this.

Kittykat im not insulting her thoughh

kittykat05
12-13-06, 11:03 AM 12-13-06
I agree with Tiger. I do appreciate it if you do take in an older cat, rather than a kitten off the streets from someone giving them away.

All those exclamation points say differently. You got really defensive, where defense wasn't needed.

I agree there was no need to be defensive, but we have to conclude that children are on this site. I would have made the same conclusion, but I don't think saying that you might live on a farm when you really don't is something mean to say.

And don't tell me to SHUT UP!!!

12-13-06, 12:35 PM 12-13-06
why???????

Chaos
12-13-06, 12:36 PM 12-13-06
Because there was someone named Allyce from the UK who had an Irish Setter with liver shunt. She also over-reacted and left quite huffily. Just curious. ;)

Thats weird, the last names, at least start, with the same letter, the location is the same, and the other Allyce, when she gets mad capitalizes the first letter of all the words.

I'm not saying that you're the same, I'm just saying that it's a weird coincidence.

Punkygirl0101

Wow..This is really weird. All I was doing was giving some basic information...as people should expect others to do. I have never seen someone be so rude for absolutely no reason.

And did i read this right, or was she trying to say I was trying to convince her not to rescue a cat?

Allyce, all THIRTY of my cats are rescued! Thats all I promote when it comes to cats, and I congratulated you on getting the cat, and gave you very nice information. I asked questions, thats ALL. You are by far the rudest person I have seen on here.

Thank you very much Kitty for defending me while I was sleeping! And I consider you a friend to, and would stick up for you anytime! Especially when someones being rude for no reason.

(And shes only being rude to me because I disagree with the fact she kills foxes for fun)

Allyce, calm down a bit. All punky was trying to do was give you some friendly information. If you don't want any helpfull information then don't come here. Think before you say because you can really be offending someone. Punky wasn't trying to say to not get the cat. She was trying to help you and if I were you, I would be glad that someone who has 30 rescue cats gave me reliable information because they have obviously had many cats before and know what to do.
