I know it's the right thing to do, but is it a good idea? I would love to save an animal then run out to the pet store and buy a new one.

yes getting any animal from a shelter or humane society is your best bet.

I love getting hamsters from there, they take such good care of them and they also are always so tame and lovable!! I'd definately recommend there rather than a petstore where they are aggressive.
