I really makes me sad to see dogs of all sizes, but especially big ones like Newfoundlands and labs, in those small cubes... has anyone ever thought of another option? I was thinking it would be cool to have thing four times the size of the cube, but each facing into a central "Play" area, and releasing them all into it, than at night putting them all in their respective cubes...

I used to work at a pet store that had cages like those for the puppies. I was a manager in training so I closed the store pretty often. Whenever I did I would let ALL the puppies out to play in the store while I did the paperwork and counted the drawer.
That is a great idea but most larger companies that could afford it wouold rather cram as many dogs into the space as possible so they can make money.

But not all the dogs get bought every day! How many is the max... two or three on a good day? So why not always stock ten puppies instead of stocking 30, selling them all over a month or two, than stocking thirty again?

Luckily it is illegal in the UK to sell dogs in the petshops. But that unfortunately doesn't stop BYB's from doing the same thing. If you want to help the dogs make a complaint and if you are buying from the shop then stop.

The store got shut down eventually but I was able to make a few changes before I left.We would put the puppies that didn't get seen often (usually "common" or large breed dogs) behind the counter so they got some attention and got to play with other puppies. I also seperated the male and female small animals and switched their bedding from pine to carefresh. I didn't make a huge difference but at least some of the animals benefited. And there was a knowledgeable pet store employee lol.

I went into a "dog store" before i got my puppy. (about 7 months ago) and the pups were only in there at night...otherwise they had an entire room to play.. with gates and such.
