a pacu is a large freshwater fish. it will eat anything any other freshwater fish will eat, flakes pellets and smaller fish. the filter depends on the size of the tank... what size is the tank?

we have kept several pacu.
They look exactly like a pirahna, except they eat more veggies and aren't as aggressive. Feed them pond-type pellets and such, and they eat goldfish on occasion. I hate using feeder goldfish due to the diseases, though.
They will grow to be frickin huge. I'm talkin as big as the tank will allow. They tend to swim in straight lines very fast, and as they get too big for an aquarium they will end up ramming their heads into the sides. It will frighten you enough to make you think they will bust the glass. They may develop big crack lines down their head from ramming into the side. I've seen some that barely fit into a 220 gallon tank. Ours barely fit into our 125 gallon. If you go to some Zoo-type aquariums you will probably see some of these monsters swimming about in the large centerpiece aquariums.
All in all, they are pretty easy to take care of fish, and can grow to great sizes and become good impressive conversation pieces.

I have a Pacu now and I have loved having it, but now it is too big for my 55 gallon tank. I am looking for a loving home for him. Any one interested?

I have also just bought some new pacus. They are great. They are the entertainment every wednesday night on the floor of my dorm. Wednesdays are live feeding day. I was just wondering how fast a pacu will grow? I have two in a ten gallon tank there are about two to three inches long right now. Also, if any of you have a 20 gallon tank i might be interested in buying it. Thanks
