Starting A pet Supply store???

I am trying to open a pet supply shop where I live as we only have stores that sell animals which I am against but there is only 1 with in 30 miles of where I live. So I figured I would give it a try. I own birds so I am wanting to carry mostly bird supplies but a few other things as well BUT I cant find anywhere to buy wholesale!! I do have a tax ID and a business licenses. Does anyone know where to start? :) Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok people I really need help here. I am opening this store with in 6 months but need to know where to get these supplies

Google "wholesale pet supply/products" and other wordings. I think that would be your best bet. I am pretty sure most of us here are on the consumer end of the pet supply world, not the...stock-a-shop end.

All I can give you are the online shops that I frequent, that have really good deals, especially when you buy a certain amount of something.

Keep in mind though, your specific interests(birds) may not accomidate the interests of your customers. Are birds really all that big in your area that it needs a shop that focuses primarily on them? Moreso than, say, the ever-popluar dog/cat/fish? You need to focus on the needs of the community to be able to stay in business longer. I would reccommend serving a wide variety of animals going by thier popularity in the community. Make your shop the go-to place for ANY animal lover, not just the bird lover.

I'm glad though that you want to be a pet supply store instead of a pet shop. I'm going to school before I try to open a shop of my own.

I would contact local rescues and see what they use, and start from there. :)

ok thanks so much. I got to thinking about selling other things after I posted that becasue the dog and cat trade is so huge. I will carry stuff for ALL pets. We ahve people here that sell monkeys so I may even carry monkey clothes among other things :)
