We need to reluctantly give up our 2 older female dogs to a loving family that will give them a wonderful life. Vanity is 13 years old, she's a husky/german shepard mix, and weighs about 120 pounds. Saffron is 8 years old and is a hound mix and weighs about 85 pounds. We love them dearly, but since having children the last couple years, we haven't been able to spend time with them like we used to. They are now outdoor dogs in a large fenced in backyard, but would like to have the attention of family.
The girls keep up on their shots, and have dog houses that could come with them if you'd prefer.
Both of them are rescuees of other pounds. Vanity was rescued from the Humany Society in Bend, Oregon. Saffron was rescued from the shelter in Knoxville, Tennessee. Vanity is very loving and friendly and will invite people into your home. Saffron is a bit more reluctant, we rescued her when she was 3 years old, so not sure of her upbringing. It has taken her along time to become loving to us, so please be patient when meeting her. She might not want to be touched at first.
The best way to contact me is through email since I'm not sure I'll have time to read the boards. My email is allis0ns at earthlink dot net. We live in Duluth, GA, a suburb of Atlanta, GA.

It might be better to just put the elder one to sleep. 13 years old huh? I hope your children do not do this to you when they are too busy to care for elder parents.

We are working for retirement so that we won't be dependant on our children. And we do not want to be a burder to them. We will live in a retirement community and then a nursing home, once we are too old to take care of ourselves.
We don't want to put Vanity to sleep. That is the last option. Are you actually suggesting that we do that? I came to this board for help and encouragement. Not to be criticized. :bawling:

Here is the reality...
Shelters and rescues are flooded with pets looking for homes. People looking for a pet are looking for a young pet, generally under 2 years old. Most people will not adopt a pet older then 6 years old. It is a sad realtiy, if I made the rules it would be differnt.
Our shelter here puts to sleep any pet over 5 years old because there is no one out there to adopt them and they take up the space for a younger more adoptable pet. Again I am sorry but that is life in the year world. Again I wouldn't have it like that if it were up to me.
So the reason I suggested that you put your own pet down is because it will be better for her to go with fimilar faces around rather then a cold lonely place with nothing but strangers. Again if it were my choice it wouldn't be like that.
I didn't have these links with me earlier but I have them now.

HOW TO FIND A HOME FOR YOUR PET

The first one will help you attemp to keep your pets. They are much better off with you and your family and although I relize have a new baby must be difficult you can look deep in your heart and try to find a way to work it out.
Again though, if they continue to be ignored and outside your best bet is to find them a new home. It sure would have been easier 8 years ago to do it.

I have an older dog(15 yrs old)with a tumor on her brain. I am not going to put her to sleep yet. I don't think that you should put yours to sleep yet either. She has had a good life and if she is still healthy than you should keep trying. Do any of your friends want her? That way you would know that she is safe and healthy. Try and talk them into it. I am going to adopt a dog named Brutus and he is 9 years old. I am going to give him a home and someone should give your dogs a good home too through their final years. I don't know if you would be willing to drive but there is a shelter that has dogs of all ages and you could bring them there. They are a no kill shelter and there is this dog named Jack that is about 15 years old. Here is the website...
www.elmsfordanimalshelter.com. Click on the sign that says welcome to elmsford. Than go to the side menu and click on family albumes. You have to do it 2 times. There will be the pictures of the dogs that they have.(not all of them) and they keep some of the older dogs at the desk with them
I hope that this helps.
Thanks shannon :apart:
