Hello. I have an Clawed frog in my community fish tank. Temperature is in the mid 70s. He is a very little frog. Just a couple of inches long. I was wondering what I should feed him? I havent seen him eat fish food (flakes or floating). And should he have some land to rest on? At the pet stores I never see them given any land. They are always in fish tanks with other fish. I am assuming that some frogs need land and others dont like this one. I have only had land frogs and toads before, never anything like this. He used to get out and roam around the house till I bought a bigger tank with a better solid lid. I was so lucky that I found him every time. So that makes me think he doesnt like it in there. Also would he be happier with another frog like him? Any websites anyone knows of about them would be appreciated too. Thanks much!

Be warned, he'll grow bigger and eat any fish that will fit in his mouth. He is 100% aquatic and doesn't need any land. The most important thing about feeding them is to make sure their food is moving, that way he can see it better.

Anyhow here is a website with information. http://members.aol.com/sirchin/afc.htm

Are they African clawed frogs? If they are, I have two of them. Mine are in a 5 gallon tank with a guppy and two leppord danios. (not sure if i spelled danios correct) Anyways they have been in that tank with other small fish also for almost three years and never have tried to eat any of the fish. I feed them special pellets for clawed frogs and alse shrimp pellets. Don't worry about land, they don't need it. They'll come up for air when they need to. I hope this helped you.

First we need to determine what you have. Do you have an African Clawed Frog (which will outgrow that 5g someone mentioned) or do you have an Aquatic Dwarf Frog?

This is a dwarf:

This is a clawed:

The dwarf guys have webbing on their "hands" and the clawed guys clearly have "fingers". The eyes are positioned differently on the head, too. Clawed guys have eyes on top, dwarf guys have eyes on the sides.

Dwarf guys are blind and strike at anything they think is food. They should be fed live brine shrimp and frozen blood worms. If they can catch your fish, they will eat them. I had 2 of them clean out my 18g tank one year.

They don't need land. They're OK in the water full time.

She (I looked it up, not a He 8-) ) is the regular version I think. It doesnt have the hand webbing. It is soooo small though. Only a couple of inches long. If it is the African clawed frog type then how old must it be? Just out of tadpole phase?? I still cant get him to eat the bloodworms and shrimp. I have had 2 small fish disappear in in the past month. A fancy tailed guppy and a neon tetra. I dont think he looks skinny either, I keep checking for that. He has gotten out 3 times before I got the new tank (better lid) and one of those times I was sure he was dead untill he twitched. I should name her Lucky 8-).

Lets hope you have a african dwarf frog. Lets pray on it! The clawed ones get hideously ugly...they come in a white color (which makes em look moldy dead..) and a brown color (a BIGGER version of the dwarf). My friend has two of the clawed white ones, and they are in a tiny thing (i feel sad for em).. but, omfg, they are ugly..lol..stick to dwarfs, they are cuter, tinier, and not aggresive to any fish :)

If it's actually an African Clawed frog you must get it out of that community tank as it will eat your fish as it gets bigger. A clawed frog requires 10 gallons per frog. If you have an African Dwarf frog then you are safe to have him in the community tank as they don't eat fish but if you keep an ADF in a community tank it's recommened that you hand feed him with a pipette from a test kit or a "never seen soap" turkey baster and squirt the frozen bloodworms right in front of his face to ensure he gets something to eat. Personally I feel these frogs should be kept in a tank on their own as they have very poor eyesight and often cannot find food unless you hand feed as I mentioned.

I just bought an african dwarf frog from Petco this weekend. The girl just said to make sure the food falls to the bottom and that they could eat pellets or other food.

I'll get some frozen blood worms and a clean pipette from work.

Thanks for the info!

ok first off, Cavalier clawed frogs do not use there eyes to find food they use smell and a sense of vibrations in water to find live food, and they readily accept pellets so live food is not a requirement. and choseamoosie 2 african clawed frogs in a 5 gallon tank i hope thos are dwarf frogs not clawed cuz keepin 2 clawed frogs in a 5 gallon tank is cruel unless your just starting them off there when they are extremly young but a few years ouch do your frogs a favor go get a 30 gallon tank. guppybreeder i do not think that they are ugly and i find them much more interesting than the dwarfs and a moldy white color lol its called albino. ok now for my question, i have been told that by a friend that when clawed frogs are in pairs of the same sex that one will morph into the opposite sex, now i know some frogs do do this but ive yet to find any resources that say this so it seems doubtful does anyone know this answer for sure, i have 2 clawed frogs right now one albino and one normal pigment, they are currently to young to tell what sex they are but i'm hoping for a pair.
