Originally, as something new and fun for my hammy I took a baby wipes container (the plastic refillable kind with the lid removed) and put sand in it (generally calcium sand from the reptile department, its not dusty and has had no adverse effects on Popple that I've experienced). He enjoyed digging in it for awhile but now he just uses it as a potty, which is fine but the sand doesn't absorb odor.. like... AT ALL.

Is there anything relatively small and granulated (not persay as fine as sand but similar so he'll still go for it) and not super expensive that will absorb odors and still be safe to use for my ham?

OH, some more info, my ham is a "panda" Syrian, he is about one and a half years old. (and he is an oddball, he does not like tubes or things that are not fairly large. Besides I think he's kind of a big boy for a syrian.)

i'm pretty sure old newspapers will obsorb all the odor~just make sure your hamster doesn't eat it!!!

"Panda" is just a petstore name, he's just a syrian.
As for the sand, i dunno how well chinchilla sand would be... but many people use that for litter.

I was going to suggest chinchilla sand and perhaps add a couple of drops of vanilla just to help mask the odour, it may help:)
