hiya
jusy bought a syrian from my pet store (the good one), and she is so huge! she's 10 weeks old. i got her because when i put my hand in her cage, she climbed up my arm and sat on my shoulder - so cute!
she doesnt have a wheel atm as the shop only had wheels for smaller pets that would def not fit her lol. have ordered a silent spinner for her :)
so far she has been very active, her only thought seems to be of escape time! she's mainly golden, with a dark brown and then a white stripe along her cheeks, she has middle-length hair with long white tufts around her back and bum lol.
her pee smells quite bad compared to my dwarfs, whose i cant smell. is this normal?
she's living in the biggest bin converted cage i could find, but going to get another tommorow and attach them. am not convinced the bin is big enough for her.
she seems to want to come and play, every time i walk past she comes and climbs on her tallest toy and looks up at me. does she need to be left alone for a day?
oh and when i say she's big, i mean i can barely hold her in 2 hands comfortably, lol. i doubt she's prego, as my pet store had had her a while and they're very good at separating and sexing i find.
will post pics soon :)
any tips would be great!

Hey, im glad you decided to get a syrian. That definetly sounds like a large one. As for the pee smelling, im not sure because Sandy's didnt smell...? Cant wait for pics! And yes you have to leave her alone for like about two days to get her used to her enviroment otherwise she'll get stressed out and get wet tail, which is mainly caused by stress. Hope that helped a little.

think im going to call her mishief, she's always trying to escape lol!
feel a bit sorry for her, the wheel she has atm is too small, she can only walk in it or she falls out.had to order a big one online, hopefully it should be here monday. she's getting exercise in her ball every day though.
will try to get some pics later :)

grr i will have to do more hunting for it! she's so active it's crazy! she's not nocturnal in the slightest, and always wants to come out, she loves her ball! best thing though, she hasnt once peed or pooped whilst out her cage!
pics coming soon!

ok here they are - they're going to be a bit small, does anyone know how to make them bigger?

photobucket account is http://s173.photobucket.com/albums/w46/pinkpink33/?start=all if this helps you see bigger! the last pic is blurry, ut wanted to know if anyone could identify her colouring? she's all golden, with a dark brown sideburns followed by white sideburns, and a dark brown patch on her head! she has small white long tuft around her back as well that you cant really see on pics!
i am calling her ferret at the mo, as when she's walking along she looks like one lol, except that she waddles so much!

in the pic of her sat on the side of her box she's actually still a little huddled up, so that isnt her full length! hope her new wheel comes tomorrow, poor thing can only walk in that one at the mo!

I was just going to ask if she uses that wheel, I've always found that particular type, totally useless! All my Ham Bams turn their noses up at them. They have silent spinners now, but they don't really use them much, they had rotastak, before I bought them new Hammy palaces, and they used those all the time! Oh well! youwin some, you lose some:)
After all that waffle, I'll get round to saying what I meant to in the first place!LOL!
Gorgeous chunk of hamster you have there, she really is a cutie:)

lol she does try, if she wants to get up speed she has her front legs on the ground and runs with the back legs lol! wheel is awful, it came free with my rotastak cage, my dwarf bent it a little but its the biggest wheel i have! the dwarves have their silent spinners, they're awesome!
she's always up on her bridge thing begging to come out, so she's spending a few hours a day (in 30 min periods) out in her ball for exercise. she just doesnt seem to want to sleep! she's not allowed out free roam as she's a nibbler, but one of my other hams has never nibbled a thing so she gets run of my ham-escape proofed bedroom!
her fur is so soft, it's kinda mid-length. am hoping she'll calm down eventually, she doesnt mind being held but she'd rather be making her escape even more desperately than my dwarves!
she doesnt seem to like sunflower or seeds or anyting else i use to treat my dwarves, do you know of anything i could get that she might like? i have no taming leverage!

gosh! Doesn't like sunflower seeds :-0
We give ours all sorts of different things,
they love rice (cooked and cooled), pieces of carrot, dried dandelion, oats!
The odd peanut(in shell), I'm trying to think what else ours get, uuummmmmm!!! Bits of fruit very occasionally, or the odd raisin or two.
That's all I can think of right now, if anything else springs to mind I'll let you know:)

She is a big chunky Long Haired Golden (Agouti) Syrian.
Females don't get such long hair like males, they tend to get little tufts of hair and be extra fluffy!)

aww shes ace. Do they do blue in those bins?
I was going to get a silent spinner for zuke but people told me that theyre too small for syrians?!
You need to hold her as much as possible or she'll be wild when she grows up like my cousins syrian hamster! when they are tame they will be relaxed in you're hand and slow down alot and dont mind being cuddled. :D just put one hand in front of the other when she walking or running on you're hands.
i found that zuke wont take anything from me outside the cage but when he's inside the cage he'll take: sunflower seeds, tomatoe, carrot

lol yes but i could only find pink that would be deep enough for a syrian wheel - it's not the best shade lol! of course you can get big enough silent spinners, they come in 4.5", 6.5" ad 12" diameters! i get mine off of ebay, it's the only place i've found so far, at merlins pet store or supplies or something.
she wont take sunflower seeds in her cage, i dont mean just by hand, i put a couple in her home when i got her and they're still there!weird!
thanks for the replies, she is so cute :)

Im thinking about gettting a bin cage but they dont look as good as store bought cages and my mum will probably moan.
What size wheel have you ordered for your syrian?
pinkpink33
04-16-07, 04:23 AM 04-16-07
i ordered a 6.5", it's designed for the average syrian, so hopefully will be big enough but if not will have to get a 12" lol! my dwarves have the tiny ones, they're perfect for them.
the rotastak and other fancy cages are pretty, but i dont find them big enough unless you have a few connected together, which takes a little longer to clean. im not really bothered with how the cage looks, as long as my hams have plenty of room, plus i enjoy making and designing new things for them, so bins are ideal for me (except i gave myself a big blister making things last night lol)
and thanks for the info moosely, i am not a syrian expert, so the help is much appreciated :)

oh trust me they are MUCH better than the store cages. They may not look all flashy and colorful, but they do the job much much better.

you could make them look flashy and colourful if you're creative, if you wanted. some people buy colourless see-through bins with bright pink lids etc, and you can make doors and proper roof panels out of mesh and hardware cloth. as hams like the dark, you could decorate the outside of the bin with perspex shapes (which wouldn't come off with washing), giving them more privacy and making it pretty.
there are lots of ways you could jazz up a storage bin if you have the time and the imagination :) i personally find what's in the bin more entertaining and pretty, i could happily sit and watch my hams play and interact for hours :) tell your mum it's like having flowers in the vase - you dont need an uber-smart vase, as it's the beautiful flowers that you want to admire anyway. just my humble opinion!
