oh my that's a few hams! and so tiny! so cute :) you're so lucky! i cant believe so many people on here have so many pets! i especially like house - she just looks adorable and mischeivous (lol my necessary ham qualities!)
ferret actually comes when i tap the floor now, so exciting! im trying saying her name every time i do this so eventually she'll come if i just say her name (hopefully). im hoping to giver her free roam of my room without the ball in a few days, have to get some bitter apple spray first though. maybe one day she'll actually want to play with me!

o my opie is adorable! i am abit biased towards dwarf hams im afraid! what colour is he? im assuming opie is male, he has a bump under his tail my girls dont have? is he a satin also? you cant really tell if pepper is in a pic, but she's all soft and tickly!
im thinking that when i everntually get some more dwarfs, i'd like to have boy ot two! i've never kept male animals, parents always told me they smelled ( i know from this forum that with hams it has no difference with gender lol). im also a little put off by the testes. is he quite calm? or is it constant escape time for him too when he's out?!! he looks adorable!

Thanks! Yes, Opie's a male. His coloration is opal, hense the name Opie! :) No, he's not a satin, it does look like he is in both pictures though!
You should definitely try male hamsters. They don't smell (I actually think that the female hamsters, or it might be just Syians, smell worse whilst in heat). Honestly, with male dwarves, the testes aren't big at all. I wouldn't want a male Syrian because sometimes their testes can get SO big... Opie's testes are not bad at all, half the time, I don't even notice them.
Opie is very calm. I have actually had a female dwarf before, her name was Kiba. No offence to her, but Opie has been much better. He hasn't bitten me and he is much more layed back and calm. If I were to choose between a male and female dwarf, I wouldn't hesitate to get a male dwarf. When he's out of his cage, he loves to run around and stuff, but he hasn't tried to escape his cage, and he's not jumpy. I think that you'd love a male dwarf! :)
Here are some more pictures of him:

awww so cute :) i have a hard time with the opal, dilute, dove, fawn colours, cant seem to find enough pics where i can actually tell them apart lol!
you only have one ham? that is a massive amount of self-control you must have! im controlled mainly by my boyfriend, if i had my way i'd probably have a couple more :)
i've never noticed a smell from my female syrian, except sometimes if she's just peed! but she only pees in her cage, she's a very good girl!
having newly re-discovered hamsters after my childhood i dont think i could ever be without one now! i can see how some old people live content lives alone with their pets :) maybe i'll be crazy hamster lady lol!
cant wait to get some boys! i love hamlet for a hamster name!
animalmagic, i love casper, is he a light grey? i love the first pic where he's lying flat, looks like he's about to do something mischeivous! ww's are gorgeous, i hope i will be able to get one or two someday! they're hard to find around here.

04-29-07, 03:06 PM 04-29-07
i do like binkle! he looks friendly! is scrabble a typical golden syrian? he has the exact same markings as ferret, with the dark brown and white flashes on his neck! though his fur is short compared to hers.
guinness looks a bit run down in that pic! im glad you rescued him :)
janie36
04-29-07, 03:14 PM 04-29-07
They are all really friendly little fellows! Scrabble is still a little timid at times but he loves coming out for a run in the ball:)
I'm pretty sure Scrabs is a typical short haired golden, but I'm quite happy for anyone to correct me if they think otherwise, as I'm not too hot on the colourings:)
Yeah, Guinness is alot healthier these days, he was living at school and not looked after very well, lived in a tiny little tank that was WAY too small for him, left to his own devices at night and weekends, never really let out etc! Of course all that has changed now:)
pinkpink33
04-29-07, 03:35 PM 04-29-07
o yes i remember reading those 2 threads, when you were trying to get him and when you got him! pets shouldnt be in schools imo. im sure he must be so much happier with you! do you only have male syrians out of preference may i ask? hoping to get a male dwarf somewhen, though my boyfriend will most likely be un-impressed, so will probably wait a while!

It's just the way things turned out! When we first got our hams, we got three, 2 boys(binkle & Folly) and 1 girl(flip), we lost flip at 18 months from Giardia, so decided to start getting rescues.
When I called the RSPCA thay had 3 hamsters at the time(2 boys & 1 girl), because I was still feeling a bit sensitive from losing flip, I opted for one of the males(Scrabble), and Guinness, well his story speaks for itself:)
pinkpink33
04-29-07, 04:24 PM 04-29-07
aww :) i love ham rescue stories! sorry you lost flip, it's sad to see them go. what is Giardia if you dont mind me asking? i've never heard of it! :)
janie36
04-29-07, 04:37 PM 04-29-07
Giardia is a diarrheal intestinal problem, caused by a parasite, more common in dogs I think! We treated her, and she lived another 6 months, but the vet said there was only so much of the medicine she could have as if she had too much it would have reverse effects on her, poor baby!
I was totally devastated when we lost her, as she was such a little character, but we did everything we could for her and gave her a happy home:)
I think we will always have rescues now, even though it's quite expensive for us to go and get them(living where we do), and it would be easier for us to get the pet shop in Penzance to put them on the helicopter, but my idea now is that there are so many animals in need of rescue, the least we can do, is add our small contribution by taking rescues:)

I would love to get some more hamsters, but I have no room, and my mom would kill me! :/

o my, that sounds awful. where could she have got it? im really sorry :( i think that you rescuing poor little animals is really great! im not allowed any more atm, but when i am i'm going straight to rspca!
cant wait to have a boy ham now!
janie36
04-30-07, 01:52 AM 04-30-07
The vet seemed to think that she may have been born with it??
God knows how she could have picked it up otherwise, we always wash the fresh food we give to our hams etc
It was difficult, because we were without a vet when she fell ill again, as the one who diagnosed her originally had just left the Islands.
There was a retired vet here, but I know he can't stand dealing with little animals, although I get on with him as a person, I don't rate him as a vet at all!
I was going to take her to see him, but she didn't make it that long, which in some ways was a blessing, as it probably would've only stressed her out!
It's hard to know what to do for the best sometimes, but I thought seeing this vet was better than no vet, but little flip didn't make it that far!
She was such a little sweetie:)
