:( I feel like crying. Okay, so today I was going to go out of town to my older brothers graduation with my parents. When I came home from school, I went to check on Chino to give him Baytril, but he was shaking like crazy! He was sleeping under the water bottle, but the dispenser wasnt right above him so I dont think it leaked. And when I felt where he was sleeping it was all wet! And then when I looked at him bottom was wet and I think he was losing some hair, either that or it just looked that way because it was wet. I feel terrible, and I feel like hes going to die before I get back in 2 days! I cant take him to the vet, as I have to leave to airport in 30 mins with parents. Some help? Any advice on why hes acting like this and what to do?
Hurry pleasee!
I wrapped him in a towel and put the towel in his cage, and I put tissue paper (the soft kind) in there too. I just cleaned his cage too.

Someone help me! :(

give him some fave. foods, like leave him with a little pile of sunflower seeds, to try to keep up his energy in the short run (he can always diet later). i really hope he's ok, im so sorry. he's getting good bacteria from somewhere to help digestion with the antibiotics yes?

lotsa posts coz didnt want u to leave all of a sudden! and not get any help! other than keeping him warm (and hopefully dry) and giving plenty of food and water i dont know. cant a relative/friend pick him up? def give him loads of tissue, that way if he gets himself wet he can at least try to get dry again. make sure there's none anywhere near the water bottle, or he'll lose all his water in no time. maybe give him a scok or something, he'ss be comforted by your smell, it can kep him warm, and it can dry him if he gets wet and snuggles in it.
keep me updated, wishing him luck

:( :( Thank you so much, but I left before I could read any of that. I left him with a towel, and did the best I could to keep him warm, and I even turned up the heat...

I couldnt leave him with anyone on such a short term notice, and even if i had a longer time I doubt any of my friends would want too.

Saldy, I came back today, and I found him laying in the same position I left him, stiff and cold. Im going to bury him in a bit, Im just exhausted from jet lag.

Rip Chino

I dont know what Im doing... its like Im a murderer. two hamsters under my care have died, and only after a few weeks.

If I do get a pet again, I think Im going to try a guinea pig, as I dont think hamsters are too good for me.

aww im so sorry :( guinea pigs are very cute, but they need a lot more than hamsters! i wouldn't give up on hams, they're such gorgeous little things!

Aww, so sorry for your loss. It's too bad that you couldn't find anyone to take care of him while you were gone. I agree with Pink though, pigs would be alot more care than hamsters. Even experienced owners like me have hamsters that die on them. It's sad of course, but you have to keep going.

i'm so sorry sweetheart but i really wouldnt blame yourself.

i might wondeif perhaps your pet shop / breeder are very good tho as i'm slightly suspicous that maybe your hams were in less than perfect health when they came to you.

Yeah it realy sounds like it was not any fault of yours my friend went thought the same thing of getting two hams in bad health from petstores and they both died.

I think everybody who has owned more than 1 hamster has had to deal with an untimely death. It's horribly tragic, but you have to realize that it can happen to anyone, it's not your fault. Stay strong :o

Now that I think about, Sandy might have been sick when I got her.. I remember when I was choosing, I was thinking she didnt look very energetic, but then I thought it was normal because all the others looked that way too ...

:/

Anyways, maybe I will get another hammy, I dont really know. Thanks though!

hams should never look tired in a pet store when you're actually choosing them, in their cage! they should be out exploring your hand, and the open air, possibly defending their territory etc! watch out for this in future! please dont go back to that store either, as you've had 2 sick hams from them!
i've only ever been to one store with lethargic animals- the baby syrians were all fighting, and the rest of the animals were sleeping. the guinea pig in with the giant rabbit didnt even react when the giant rabbit sat on him. i dont go there anymore, even for supplies etc. they have a bigger selection of everything, but i can order online instead :)
hope you get a new ham ham, they really are the best. im sorry for your bad experiences :(

I agree with Pinkpink. Try getting in touch with a reliable breeder. But don't give up on them! :o

Definetly not giving up! Actually, since where I live there is no ham breeders, Im going to this other petstore, its much smaller, but MUCH better. (They have bigger cages and even toys!) I went and checked out the store today and it looked wonderful. I even played with one of the hams, and the workers were very gentle with the hams.

My mother said I can get two dwarfs tomorrow if I want, or later if its too early for me. I cant wait :) Although I am still sad about Chino because he was energetic and I fell in love with him.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, the shop I went to had wws! I was so excited, because I know there hard to find, so I thought I might get those. Are robos campbells or wws better?

Sorry to hear of your loss. I've lost three little dwarfs now. It amazing how such little creatures can steal our hearts.

wws are in general friendlier than campbells, in that they're less nippy, most are also more vocal, which is cute too! robos arent nippy, but are very fast and i dont think they enjoy handling, most of them anyway, but will put up with it.
i would say go with wws, they are hard to find and i hear can make the best pets!
