HI all, new to the boards.

My little girl Betsy Ross is almost a year old, and has always been very rambunctious. Since it's gotten warmer, she's been obsessed with going outside. We don't mind, because she comes back often to check in and have a snack... plus, she's spayed. But now we're having a problem with her...

Thursday she came in from outside with a "shoestring" in her mouth. Then she dropped the "shoestring" and it began squirming around on its own!  It turned out to be a baby garter snake, thin and about a foot long. I screamed, my fiance caught it and put it back in our garden. We laughed about it later and joked, "Well, I bet she's gonna bring the momma home soon!" Then... yeah. Friday afternoon she came in with a BIGGER brown snake in her mouth. This one was about twice as thick and twice as long. The thing is, she seems to think she's bringing us a gift. After carrying a little snake up a flight of stairs (probably being nipped all the way) she's SO exhausted and just lies down and cleans herself, lol. [keep in mind, both these snakes were LIVE, in her little mouth]

Anyway, I doubt there's much I can do about this except ground her, but then she WHINES incorrigibly until we let her outside. So... any advice, or similar experiences?

Well, catching little animals like snakes and rodents is instinct for them. It can be pretty hard to break, espcially since you usually don't see them do it. My cat brought in a mole (not the bigger ones) the other day. And he brings in mice, rats, squirrels, etc. We have never seen him catch a mouse or anything and if we did and punished him, he'd probably do it later. Because its his instict. So I don't really think there's much you can do. Punnishing them after they catch the snake probably isn't a good idea because they don't really know what they did.

By the way, Welcome to PetsHub!

Again I don't think you can break this either. The only advice I can give is watch whats in her mouth when you let her in. My cat back home is ahunter and I can't tell you how many times we've had squirrels or birds in our house not to mention the mice. They are proud and believe they are giving you gifts. I guess you could be happy she loves you so much ahha.
