Animals shouldn't be sold in petstores. People mass breed the animals (PUppy/kitten/Small animal mills) just so they can make money off of it. Not to mention you can't screen new homes.

Alasse, if you agree with dogs and cats being sold in pet stores, KNOWING they come from puppy and kitten mills..I think I lost a lot of respect for you right there.

Dont sell any!
People should be attrached to your store on your knowledge of animal health (would products to buy), the high quality products, and a nice selection.
Honestly, i dont know why everyone thinks you have to sell animals. People are so ignorant about what animals really need and so a lot of people take a shortcut and go to a petstore and get an animal..no questions asked...get crappy supplies...no "dont do that"...and the animal has a less quality of life.
Im not yelling at you if these seems harsh. But before you even THINK to put animals into the store...consider the supplies and such.
Its days like these that I want to drop everything im doing..change my career path and make a high quality pet store. But i guess i need to be a vet when these people get pets from pet stores not knowing what the heck to do and the pet ends up sick at a young age.

dont expect anything other than negative comments regarding the same of animals. I cant condone the sale of cats and dogs in pet shops but the sale of a few well bred, genetically sound animals is fine SO LONG as you are prepared to vet every potential new owner on their knowledge, spend time going through the animals requirements etc...
steer well clear of anyone that breeds purely for profit, stick with buying from exhibitors, small scale hobbiest breeders.

Maybe talk to the loca Humane society about doing an adoption day instead of selling animals from byb?

i love adoption days! lol
i think they are really affective.
there was HAWS in front of a grocery store i worked with one puppy, and 3 cats and all of them got adopted!
and i think having them in a pet store is even more affective.

My friend has got a pet store. Well, it's not hers just yet. It's a family ran buisness called 'ThOmSon'
It has been running for six years and has loads of buisness. She's only sixteen and so it's her Dad's Pet Store. She was ten when it started and could only help with her parents, but now it's her job basically and will get passed down to her.
First Of All: Don't sell kittens; I don't agree with them doing it either but I think it's OK the way they treat them. They don't keep them in a cage except at night when they all have their own cage, which I don't like..so..tiny.
During the day they all have this separate building with two people working in it. Feeding them, etc.
It's a h-u-g-e room and the door is always open and outside it's a 12ft high pen with a roof too..so they can go outdoors. They also only keep six at a time, and they don't let them mate.
Second: Puppies are not allowed to be sold over here which I think is good.
They get their kittens from two breeders that every second litter, they give to them, at least one. Weird.
They sell rats. They have two of these cages:

Which I'm getting, with three of each sex in it.
I think it's a good set up.
Same with mice but bigger cage with smaller gaps.
They sell fish.
They have one hundred fish!
I don't know but I think it's a bit much.
Their dog is good so he sits at the door with a bowl of treats for when he fancies one and some water and when someone comes in BARKS.
As to say welcome, and then my friend's little sister, 8, says, 'Welcome.'
Lol please don't open it unless you have really made plans!

I agree with you I totally do but she has been checked out and reported on, has forty-two years of experience, and I think she's weird, nuts, and unpro!
Though she's popular and all..yes, WHY?

I know that's what i mean she will keep saying:
'I've been breeding for..ages. Forty-bla bla- years'
She'll breed the same one probably.
I hate when people do that but everyone says she's good. All I know is I'm not buying from her..!

People are just ignorant and think the only place they can buy animals is at a pet shop.
And around here, that IS the only place you can buy small animals, like mice and rats. We have no breeders in our state.
Dogs and cats shouldn’t be sold at pet shops, however. If you are thinking of opening a store, you should give potential dog and cat buyers as much encouragement to adopt from shelters as possible.
It would be very wise to have a store that sells good quality supplies, and gives out valuable information to ignorant people. I have yet to come across a store that knows ANYTHING about keeping small animals. And having done work experience in one, I have seen so many people buy animals out of the blue with no knowledge at all.
Usually families see a cute bunny, and don’t realise it is going to grow. And they buy a cage for it that is too small for a guinea pig. The employees don’t care about the animal’s welfare, so they sell them overpriced products and give them little information.
If in your area you can adopt small animals from shelters, then I see no need in selling them in your store.
