Hello,

Took my little Guinea Pig,to the vet today, because she was in pain passing water, the vet took an exray and said that she has a bladder stone on the way out, and one forming in the bladder, she's going to have an op, to get the one forming, out, the vet reckons that the dry food is to blame. If that is true, can anyone advise on alternatives i can give her? I love my guinea very much, but £60 for every stone ?

Has anyone had this problem, and what did you do?

any advice will be appreciated.

A healthy guinea pig diet consists of Guinea pig pellets(not Rabbit pellets-they don't have the added vitamin C) in unlimited amounts, Timothy hay in unlimited amounts, and at least a cup of fresh veggies/fruits each day. I feed my piggies one serving of veggies in the morning and one in the evening, about half a cup each time. Always have a fresh supply of water in a sipper bottle, not a bowl. Some pigs benefit from a bottle of pure cranberry juice(not punch) in the cage too. What does your pig usually eat?

Hello Trin,

In the morning, I give them, carrots, apple, cucuber, cabbage and sprouts and now and then, a little lettuce with hay and half bowl of guinea pig food, aways has drip water bottle. In the evening, they have grass and more meadow hay, the dry food is for Guinea pigs, called Gurtie Guinea.

Poor little thing, she's going for her op tomorrow, the vet seems confedent she will be ok, because thay have changed the anesthetic for small animals, so there isn't any shock with it.

Thank you, for your reply.

Sounds like a wonderful diet http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif...the only thing I would caution you on is giving your piggie carrots every day. There is evidence that too many carrots cause Fatty Liver Disease in guinea pigs. Experts recommend an inch long piece every other day. Its a shame really, because if your pig is anything like my girls, carrots are a favorite treat! Good luck with your little Darling http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hello Sussy,

So sad to know that your guinea pig has bladder stone. I think your guinea pig must be in pain.

Anyway, good luck in your guinea pig's operation.
Keep us informed. Good luck once again.

Thank you everyone,

I have been so uptight all day, it's been a long one, at last, I picked her up tonight, looking very well, oh, her name is Sooty, by the way, and I bet you can guess her colour?

Yes she was in a lot of pain, standing on her hind legs and squeaking, but she's a lot better now.

Thank you Trin, about the information on the carrots, I will do what you advise, and give it to them every other day.

I have Emailed a vet, to try and sort the recuring bladder stone problem.

Thank you again.
