i adopted a gerbil about 1 month ago to be a friend for a lone gerbil i had gotten free from a pet store, both males.

after 2.5 weeks i tried to put them in a split - frisky wasnt interested in fang at all, but after a few hours, fang managed to attack frisky through the split, and took a chunk out of his face and scratched his nose. i then separated them for another week, and let frisky heal.

today, i put them back in the split. a lonely gerbil is a sad thing, i dont want to make my pets unhappy.
after only an hour, fang was absolutely manic, trying to get at frisky to kill him. i had put an extra layer of mesh in place so that no injuries could occur, so both boys are fine. frisky was cowering at the back of the tank, so i decided to remove fang, and separate them again. i spoke to fang to let him know i was coming, but as soon as i got in his half he savaged my finger. he dug his teeth in and dangled, and then, whilst keeping his lower teeth sunk in, repeatedly bit down over and over again, in different spots, with his top teeth!
i was very good, i didnt shake him or try to get him off, just let him do his thing whilst i screamed profanities! eventually he let go (his back legs were on my other hand the whole time, it's not like he was going to fall), and i put both gerbils back in their own tanks.

i am now sausage fingered. it's twice the size of my other one, and is patterned with quite a few black teeth marks and holes. i cant bend it, but it should go down soon.

im going to keep my boys separate now, for good. frisky was never very interested in fang, and he's so happy when he's alone, and always busy. fang was the aggressor, so i dont think he will miss frisky either. he's not as lively, but i think he's just lazier. both boys get plenty of out of cage time to explore and destroy my bed! they're both lovely boys apart, i've not had nay bites before and both purr, so i think they must be content.

i cant believe how much that bite hurt! i've had many a dwarf hamster latched onto me, but that was nothing compared to this pain!
i also dont want to risk them together because of the blood i lost - i dont think frisky would survive losing that much blood, just from a single bite in an awkward place.

fang hasnt been punished, and he's been out since and he was fine with me. i couldnt punish him for not liking frisky, and reacting in his gerbilly way. if he'd got frisky i would be mad at him, but he couldnt, so we're ok now.

anyway, that's my rant done!

my finger hurts from reading that!!

You are stronger than I, I think I would grabbed his mouth and pried his teeth off me! I couldn't let something just bite me for a while...I would have to get it off!

I would DIFFENANTLY keep them separate!!

Poor frisky? right? the one that got attacked?

Cowaring is not a good thing :(

i felt so sorry for frisky last time fang managed to get him, i was angry with fang for a few days until frisky got better. after the event frisky didnt seem at all bothered by his injury though!
no, i dont want to put them back in a split and just wait and see if fang eventually gets used to him and stops trying to kill him. that would be cruel to frisky, leaving him there to cower in th corner.

well when my first dwarf hamster got into the habit of dangling from a finger /knuckle / any skin available whenever i stepped in her territory (her cage, down the side of the bed, near the pc etc), it would shock me, but the pain wasnt too bad. it was the repeated chomping by fang that hurt, and there was no call for it! he wasnt going to fall anywhere!
it wasnt that long, no longer than like 10 seconds, just feels a long time when you're being savaged!

i hope it goes down soon, i had sewing plans for tomorrow with my new machine!

still...chomp chomp chomp...no..LOL

I can't sew to save my life!!

Glad you can!!

What about getting him neutered? Would that calm him down? Not suggesting it, just curious because that's what you would do if it was a rat...

I am still kinda new with gerbs :p

im still new with gerbils too! frisky was my first one, and he's only been with me a couple of months!
i think neutering is not a preferable option, not something to be used just because i'll have to have an extra tank in my room. gerbils are a lot smaller than rats, so the anesthetic is much more dangerous to them. i wouldnt like to risk it when frisky is happy alone, and fang seems ok about it too.

maybe it's because he has just *matured* a few weeks ago, his hormones might be all over the place. whereas frisky has a couple of months on him.
might be worth trying another into in a few months, but im not sure.

yes, i have a new sewing machine - keep putting on weight so i just thought i's give up buying expensive trousers and make my own! made 2 pairs so far, and some underwear :)

Sweet!!

I wish I could sew :(

I didn't think neutering was good for gerbs, but wasn't sure ya know? :p

I am off to bed..Night!

i think it's one of those controversial topics - some people do it and some dont. i'd rather not risk it.

sewings not hard at all! i mean you get a pattern, follow it, and then sew it together! trousers and bags are really easy, it's pretty tops im trying to master now! stretchy fabric is harder!

off to pick up my shelves from post office (missed them yesterday as was asleep). hope i can screw them in ok with my darned sausage finger!

did you know you can get tetanus from a pet bite?! another forum told me! i have no idea if im up to date, but it hasnt gotten worse, just no better lol! it doesnt hurt, i just cant move it because it's so fat!

noos! it was not the shelves that i missed, just the irish wolfhound calender i bought for my dad for xmas!
i've now had 2 sets of shelves mailed - one set a week ago and the 2nd yesterday, as the 1st set didnt turn up.
got all the toys and wooden bits for the new set-up, just hope the shelves come tomorrow!

Oooooohhh! Pink! that sounds super painful! Poor boys, some animals no matter how hard you try are just never going to get on! I don't blame you for not neutering, I wouldn't even consider my gu's and they are loads bigger that gerbils!
Tetanus usually last about 5 years before you have to have a booster I think?? Certainly wouldn't hurt to have one if your finger has shown no signs of going down in the last few days!
Anyway, keep us posted:)

my finger is practically normal sized now!

the boys are being a bit odd though - when frisky comes out for a run, he jumps up to fang's cage and sits and waits for him, his nose through the topper bars. fang responds by trying to kill him when he notices frisky's there. i've managed to herd frisky away before fang gets there, but if i put up something to stop frisky getting to fang's cage, he throws a tantrum, kicks all my stuff around and desperately tries to destroy everything in his way!

why does he not reallise that fang wants to kill him?!!
anyway, frisky's been getting moody at me, i think for keeping him from fang. he's started to give me warning nips when im in his way, instead of head-butting me. i think now that he's remembered other gerbils exist, he wants 1.
i dont have the room (i've been through this with my boyfriend) to get another, and a bigger tank for the pair, or to have 3 lone gerbils (which i really dont want).
he's ok sometimes, but others he's just moody. im worried, im going to give them separate play areas and see if that helps. i just dont know what to do.
