Desi 2006 002I just wanted to see if anyone has the feeling that no stirrups can dangerous but very rewarding to your balance. I know that it helps you but shouldn't the trainer let you decide if ou are comfortable with it or not. I hate it but I am very good at it though. Does anyone else feel this way???

I love no stirrups and I think it's great and helps a lot. But yeah. It could be dangerous if you didn't have enough balance or something. But I love it. hah. x3

I rode at least one horse a day with no stirrups year round. About a month out from finals, my stirrups mysteriously dissapeared from my saddles and i didn't get them back until finals. Unless I was jumping something over 4 feet or showing, I didn't get them back. A couple of times I did some "tune up" shows, without stirrups. Nearly every class I competed in had some element of no stirrups, but luckily my two equitation horses were super easy and calm. It didn't bother me at all.

I want to do the flat without them with my new TB gelding but I am scared to just randomly drop them just because he is off the track, and younger.

He has to get used to it at some point. You can always cross them over the shoulders, but that was an automatically frowned upon in my classes. Try lunging him first with the stirrups dangling and go from there. Most racehorses are completely fine with stirrups dangling. Jockeys and exercise riders very rarely have their feet in the stirrups until it's time to run.

You could always try it on a dead broke lesson horse first if you're worried. (:

But. I usually put my stirrups up when I work without them. I know I would hate metal clanging against my sides so I'd rather not have my horse go through it. But that's just me I guess. P:

I agree. But Iam good with it, I jump with out them some days, I am just worried that he might get upset. Like if I get really left behind a accidentally hit his back while landing from the jump, he gets upset and gets bucking, so I am just nervous that when it comes to jumping, I ll get bucked off and get hurt.

it can be dangerous if you don't do it properly..and if your balance sucks..but if your balance is not bad..or alright..than no stirrups is GREAT to help with balance and posture. While posting..many people think that it's your legs that do all the work..but try posting with no stirrups and you'll know its your abs.

well i use stirruips when i have the saddle on but when i go bare back i dont. i think if your trotting alot then have stirrups with your saddle.

however if u ride bare back alot then dont have stirrups u will hurt the horse.

does that answer your question??

The idea of working without stirrups is to improve your balance WC. Even with the saddle, there are times when you should work without them.

i never new that ..

so do u sometimes take the stirrups off for balance??

well i guess if u go bare back it would give u balance anyway, right?

I thought I should try riding the horse I've got on loan with no stirrups because my seat and balance is a bit rubbish since I'm quite out of practice. I thought I'd try a trot but he was so bouncy I had to grip with my knees just to stay on, so he went faster and faster... i nearly got bounced right out the saddle! Poor horse must have been so confused, I've not tried it again since!
