a friend of mine tells me today, "One of my friends is getting rid of her hamster, I told her you could take it"
*sigh* Don't you love that?
I used to own two syrian hamsters, but never a dwarf before... How different are they? I used to own mice as well, so I know all about housing.

I've only ever kept Syrians. They are solitary creatures, the dwarf species ,I've heard can be in groups of the same sex, unless you want a
population explosion.

If hes been alone all this time, most likely he won't accept a companion, and its probably better to keep him alone.
Their care is not that much different then a Syrian. They are not as easy to handle, and can be jumpy..but that only if under socialized.
For dwarves, i much prefer bin cages over wire, cause they can usually get out of a wire cage. They are escape artists.
Also, no sugar in their diet, not event treats with sugar. They are very prone to diabetes.

definitely go with a bin cage!
My robo's would always squeeze out of even the smallest of cracks in the wired cages. I got a big bin for them and it's perfect. No escapes, and they get way more room compared to what wired cages offer.
