Well my lovely little man Alex is here! He decided he wanted to come into the world 1 whole month early. He was born 9/27/2007 by c-section at 9:02PM. He weighs 5lbs and 8oz and is 18 inches long.

I am so in love with him already! I got to come home today but he has to stay at the hospital for a little while longer. He has to stay in the NICU (Natal Intensive Care Unit).

My nephew was born 5 weeks early and if I remember correctly, weighed 6lbs. Had to stay in the hospital for a week though... I bet you can't wait to bring Alex home. :)

I definitely cannot wait to bring my little man home. I have been busy preparing my house for him. I am in the process of washing all his baby clothes, blankets, bedding, etc since you don't know who has touched the stuff at the stores and I don't want Alex getting sick.

I am going to be heading over to the hospital again tonight at 8pm to bring him some more breast milk, I am so excited!

I love baby clothes!! I almost bough this cute baby outfit that was a cute little zip up sweat shirt, jeans, and a little onesy with a dog on it...lol. And I was going to buy it just because it was cute, maybe for future kids ;)

Punkygirl - Well he really doesn't have a cute nursery yet lol He shares his room with the ferrets and gliders for now anywas until we get everything unpacked completely and then maybe we can put the cages some place else. Right now he has just his crib in one of the extra bedrooms which we are considering putting in our bedroom for at least the 1st 6 months or so.

Most of Alex's clothes have cute little doggies on them lol I will make an animal lover out of him yet hehe I just have all these adorable clothes and I really wanna put them on him :) I have 2 little outfits that have pants, a shirt, and then a little jacket with it... they are so cute! Only 20 mins until I can call the NICU to see if he might be coming home today. *Fingers Crosses*

Ratbrat - Thank you, fingers crossed that his bilirubin is low enough for him to come home today. His bilirubin is to high which is causing the jaundice so hopefully the numbers are low enough that I can bring him home.

I just called the hospital and his bilirubin levels aren't low enough for him to come home today :( They do have him under special lights that help bring it down but so far they just aren't low enough but I am really hoping that he can come home tomorrow at least. I am gonna spend tons of time with my animals today and seriously clean up my house before his arrival so at least I won't have to worry about doing extensive cleaning for a few days once he is here. Plus I will be busy introducing him to all the fur kids :) Zoe smelled him on my last night and she seemed very interested.

Oh I gotta tell you guys this, when my water broke at 4:15 am on Thursday Zoe could smell something was different, she kept following me all over the house and would sit right outside the bathroom door every time I was in there. I wonder if she knew what was going on?

It was so cute when I came home all the animals were so glad to see me, it was only like 3 days that I had been gone but by their reactions you'd swear I was gone for a month lol

Well keep checking back here for updates and there will be more pics of course as well so keep an eye out for them.

God I am so in love with this little boy! I hate being away from him and when I am at the NICU visiting him the time goes by WAY to fast, I will look up at the clock and 2 hours will have already gone by.

I can't wait to hear about how the animals,especially the dogs, react to him!! I know my dogs would be like "What is that and whats it doing in our house?" lol. They are not used to children, especially babies.

Punkygirl - Yeah my dogs aren't use to babies or children either so I am pretty anxious to see how it goes... even with the cats. Dante and Zoe have both been around kids and do not mind them at all but neither have been around a baby. I am just going to have to supervise at all times.

Caitandcritters - yeah I know how you feel! I couldn't wait to get Alex out, I really want my body back lol I can't wait until I finally get all healed up from the surgery because then I can start exercising and all that good stuff. I feel like I deflated LOL But I am amazed at how much my stomach has gone down in just 4 days, its very surprising to me but I am glad hehe

Well I went and saw Alex tonight and the good news is that they are moving him to the regular nursery tonight so he will be out of the neonatal intensive care unit. YAY! That is just one step closer to him being able to come home :) I can't wait!

I can't wait to hear how things are going tomorrow, I will update you then.

Hes so cute!!!! I always used to be the type who never wanted kids, but seeing all these babies (Your new born, a pregnant colleague, and my friend Sam's baby Joseph who you probably remember turns 1 year in November!)...makes me want kids now!! Years down the line of course lol.

I'm not too worried about my body (yeah right...) but I'd like to be able to sit through a whole movie without having to pee or go one day without having vicious moodswings, LOL. Soon, though, soon!

Caitandcritters - I know what you mean! I am so happy that I do not have to get up 3-4 times a night to pee and my appetite has decreased so much, I am not nearly as hungry as I was when I was preggers.

Punkygirl - I never thought that I would really want kids, at least not until I was like 25-27 years old but Alex surprised us. Luckily though we are financially secure and have no problems caring for a baby. Alex is a very happy surprise, I do not mind him coming at this point in my life. He actually came at the perfect time honestly. My hubby just got new job that pays very well, he has worked there for 2 months now and its working out so well.

I called this morning and Alex still have to remain under the phototherapy lights so he can't come home yet :(

He was moved to the regular nursery last night though and his levels are dropping just not enough to come home yet :(

Oh and if you are wondering what that patch is on his head its velcro, he has one on each side of his head. Its there to hold on his special shades when he is under the phototherapy which reminds me of someone in a tanning bed lol

Rat - I had Alex's birth announced in the newspaper, its free so I said what the heck why not. I dunno what newspaper it will show up in though so I gotta keep my eye out for it.

Punkygirl - Yeah he was just fed before we got there so he was nice and sleepy. I tried to keep the flash off on most of them but wouldn't come out as clear or to dark. I felt bad for disturbing his sleep but he was looking so cute that I couldn't resist. Not to mention they put that cute little hat on him lol

He is home! They called me at noon today and said I could come in and get him. So my hubby took of the rest of the day from work and we went and picked him up at roughly 1pm. He just ate and is sound asleep on the couch. I will get pics up of him when I can, this is my first time so I am kinda nervous hehe.

Caitandcritters - Thank you so much! The only thing I am having trouble with is learning a good position to breast feed him in that is comfortable for both of us. He is suckling VERY well, I thought he wouldn't catch on right away but he is doing great... I also have trouble telling if he has had enough so I feed him until he isn't interested anymore which takes like 30mins.

I will post pics real quick before he wakes up. I will be on again tomorrow if I have time, I will be on my own tomorrow since my hubby will be gone until late in the evening. I hope tonight goes well, I do not look forward to losing sleep hehe.

Well last night was not to bad at all. He ate at 11pm, 3am, and then again at 7am so he has been sleeping a good amount between feedings. Thankfully I was able to get some sleep.

Oh and I forgot to say how the animals were with him. Well I just let Zoe and Dante sniff his feet when he first came home and they are doing great. I have to watch Dante cause he is a spaz and runs and jumps around like crazy but so far he has done pretty well. Zoe perks up every time she hears him make a noise lol it is very cute.

I will keep everyone posted, gotta get some sleep while he is passed out.

Ahhhhhhhh soooooo cute!! That little outfit is so cute!

Wow! 4 hours between feedings is pretty good. That's about the norm, I believe. My nephew has been on the same schedule. Tanner went about 4 and a half between feedings when he first came home, then it increased slowly.

Do you have one of those breastfeeding pillow deals? I used one, and they make everything easier. Or just mess around with a bed pillow and see if that helps. I always just fed him until he didn't seem to want any more. They know when to stop. :)

Caitandcritters- Actually I do not have one of those pillows I will look into getting one. I do have a pump that I have been using to give him some milk with a bottle if after being on the breast he doesn't seem interested anymore, I am trying to make sure he is full and getting enough until he 100% use to the breast. The entire 6 days he was in the hospital they had him on a bottle so I know it will take some time for him to adjust but he is sucking and getting some milk cause I hear him swallowing so its a start. I am gonna try some different position for him today.

Oh and that outfit is a preemie outfit but its still to big for him lol he drowns in it lol

In the hospital they were feeding him every 3 hours but when I brought him home he was hungry every 2 hours at first but then from 11pm on he has been satisfied with feeding every 4 hours and I ain't complaining lol

I will of course take lots more pictures today :)

Nature freak - I love it, its a lot of work though but I really do enjoy it alot :) And the good thing is I was completely able to continue with the care I have been giving my animals. They did great with no problems and I had enough time for all of em which was nice. The cats are just to interested in him right now lol they keep trying to get right up in his face so I have to supervise and watch Alex all the time.

Oh and I also LOVE breast feeding because its only been 7 days and my stomach has gone down so much! even the ugly stretch marks are lighter and looking better. I am hoping that withing 1-2 months I can be back to my normal weight, it would be nice. I did only gain 36lbs so its not to bad.

But hey losing up to 1500 calories a day from just feeding Alex is alright with me hehe

If I ever have kids (hope I don't, unless I adopt) that is deff. the route I'll go. And it saves alot of money too. Not something many people think about!

Yeah it does! I was looking at formula just to see how much it costs and it is expensive as hell. And I am not gonna lie breast feeding hurts VERY bad but it is so worth it and after like 5 mins it gets better and a friend of mine who has a 5 month old said that the pain goes away completely in 1-2 weeks time so thats not to bad IMO. Plus you kinda get use to the pain, at least I am by now. I just take the pain and try not to think about it.

There are ways to "prepare" your nipples/breast for the big day but I didn't know about it until later on.

Just got done giving Alex a bath and feeding him. My husband and I bought him a preemie outfit last night and what do you know it fits him! We have 1 other preemie outfit and its to big.

I believe dogs know when we have "Puppies" and respect the pack leaders babies just like they would in a real pack :)

My mom said when I was a baby I slept ALL night. One night she had to rush me to the hospital cause I slept for 12 hours, and then another 16 (after year one), but I ALWAYS slept atleast 8 hours a night which worried her, but every test said nothing was wrong. And to this day I still usually sleep 12 hours a night, and am up for 18-20 lol. (Not everyone has 24 hour days).

I love those blankets!! I see me using them for rat cages lol.

Yeah I use baby blankets for my ferrets cage, of course alex and the ferrets do NOT share blankets lol.

I was so glad when Alex slept for 4 hours I am hoping it will be the same tonight.

Zoe for some reason keeps sleeping by the front door, she has never done that before and she follows me even to the bathroom. She has acted differently but nothing concerning.

Man my surgery site itches! of course I can't scratch it though grrr

My mom gave birth to twins without a c section, AND I was a breech baby, and premature. Maybe the doctors were morons..considering her life was in danger for all of that. I wasn't breathing when I was born, and had the umbilical cord wrapped around my throat.

You should totally get one, they are like a god-send, so useful. How did feeding go today? Did you find a better position? And the pain will go away eventually, it just takes a bit to get used to it. It DOES hurt. :(

Hehehee, my sister has a c-section not too long ago, and when you mentioned the surgery site itching, I just pictured her the last time I saw her, standing and scratching the air infront of where her scar is, with this awful expression on her face because it itches and she can't scratch it. :p

Caitandcritters - Yeah Alex is getting darker, I know it takes mixed babies some time to really get in their color. He looked white to me at first lol but he is starting to get a nice tan color to his skin.

I am definitely getting the pillow I already told my hubby about it so we maybe getting it this weekend. I am also going out to get Alex one of those baby swings. I found a really nice one for only like $100 so I am gonna get it.

Feeding is going better, he is still fussy about the nipple and when he is really upset and cranky he won't latch on so I have to pump occasionally and feed him through a bottle. Laying on my side while nursing him works well, I can't wait to get the pillow to try it that way, I am sure it will be tons better.

Yeah it really sucks not being able to itch it lol and the tape that they put on it doesn't help because when I move around or stand up it pulls a little and makes it itch even more haha.

Oh I had to have a c-section because Alex's face was facing the wrong way (up instead of down) and I couldn't push him out. The Dr. said that some women can still push them out naturally this way but for some reason I couldn't.

Aww, fussy baby! They get that way around feeding time, heh. Ehhhh pumping I think hurts worse than straight breastfeeding. :( I don't think it'll take him too much longer to get switched all the way over, though.

Yay!! You'll be sooo much happier with the pillow. It's good you found a position that works for both of you. The swing is another good thing. Tanner always got a kick out of his. He also had one of those little bouncer chairs, and he loved that thing. Then he got too big for it, hehehee.

Is he generally a happy boy? He just looks like he's happy to me.

Eeee I hate the thought of C-sections... It scares me! :p I hope I don't have to have one, especially since I don't plan on having any meds or an epidural. I'm not sure how they work that out then, but. I'm pretty sure I don't want to find out. :cold1:

Yeah he really is a good baby, he only has really fussed when he is hungry. Otherwise he is sound asleep or I have noticed him trying to watch tv even though his eyes can't focus that far away yet its still very cute.

I found the perfect swing for him which I am going to go and get tonight actually, I can't wait I know it was a life saver with my baby brother but then again Alexander isn't to bad so I just want him to have something to soothe him and relax him.

Alex is doing so much better with breast feeding, he was latched on and suckling for over 30 mins straight last night which was fine with me, I want him to get the hang of it and enjoy it.

Yeah the c-section scared me too but oh well I couldn't control it and so long as Alex got here safe and sound.

With the c-section when u do not have an epidural they will give you the epidural if u want to be awake for it otherwise they will knock you out and you'll wake up not preggers anymore lol I know when I had the epidural when it came time for the c-section they gave me more medication through the epidural to make me completely numb, before I was only partially numb but they made it so I couldn't feel anything below my belly button.

It's so cute when they watch things, even though you know they can't really see all too well. My nephew likes to stare at the ceiling like he's watching a baseball game. Ceilings, woo. LOL

I bet he will just love it. For some reason most babies like em. Must be the rocking motion. I had to go through storage today and dig out Tanner's baby stuff, and found his old swing, plus my pillow and the half moon pillow thing. I didn't expect to find it! I thought it had been given away. Good find! That thing is also a big help.

Oo so they CAN give you drugs for that if it turns out there is an issue and you didn't have meds in the first place? Ok well that makes me feel better. I would want to be awake when they got the baby out, but I wouldn't want them to just cut into me when I had NO anesthetic whatsoever. I doubt they would, but if it was such an emergency you'd think they wouldn't want to wait the 10-15 minutes for the stuff to take full effect. It's just scary to think about. I'm having so many doubts about the natural child birth stuff. But I suppose I will just suck it up, and whatever happens, happens.

When do you have to take him back in for a check up?

We got Alex's swing today and he loves it :) He was in it for 1.5 hours before I finally took him out to sleep on the couch. I will get some pics of him in it tomorrow.

Caitandcritters - We went to Babies R Us today and they really didn't have much of a selection on the boppy pillows so I am going back on either Monday or Thursday to see if they have anymore, they were out of most of them. I loved the store though it was just so crowded and busy today and so I did not want to stay long, I don't want Alex getting a cold or the flu so I have been carrying hand sanitizer with me everywhere and washing my hands a ton. I also won't let anyone touch him or hold him unless they wash their hands first lol He is just so tiny and fragile I don't want him getting sick at all.

Well if its an absolute emergency then they knock you out completely with anesthesia. My mom had a c-sections with myself and my sister because of complications and was rushed in to have an emergency c-section and they knocked her out completely but if there is enough time and its not to big of an emergency they will give you an epidural so you can be awake. And honestly it only took maybe 5 mins if that for my epidural to kick in when they 1st gave it to me so it doesn't take long at all.

I tried real hard to have a natural birth without any pain medication but I did not expect it to hurt so bad. I also wanted to have a vaginal birth instead of a c-section and I really tried to push him out but he wasn't budging... oh well maybe next time if I have another baby.

Alex goes in for his 1st appointment with the pediatrician on Thursday 10/11, he is getting checked out for his circumcision. I really do not want to do it but my husband wants to. I think its a totally unnecessary medical procedure, if you teach your baby boy to clean himself correctly then there is no reason or need for it. Plus its really horrifying how they go about doing it too, I actually got to see one being done once, not in person though.

I totally agree about the circumcision thing. I'm way against it though, like really bad because it's just, as you said, unnecessary. Plus America is one of the only countries that does it besides certain religions and what not.

I agree with you as well, if I ever have a boy he won't be circumsized. My brother wasn't circumsized when he was a baby and never had any problems.

Mine would be. My parents didn't get it done for my brother and my grandparents didn't get it done for one of my uncles.. They both had major problems with it when they were younger. I know it is a matter of opinion though.

Caitandcritters - Things are going pretty well actually. Last night Alex was up every 2 hours so that was not much fun and I am pretty exhausted today, I can't wait until my hubby comes home so I can have a break. Its 3pm and I am just now getting to eat something.

Well he threw up one feeding 10 mins after he ate like all over me which wasn't fun and this was at like 3 am. No he wasn't colicy but I have noticed he is wanting 2 eat more at a feeding, I am seeing an appetite increase which is good. No he hasn't switched over completely yet I have been taking a break and pumping because (now this may sound gross lol) my nipples have become cracked and slightly bleeding which I have read does happen and is normal and so I bought lanolin oil creme stuff and have been applying it after every pumping and it says to do it for 2-3 days to let your nipples heal up some. I think he was latching on incorrectly so I am gonna pump for one more day and then try again since they are healing up nicely.

He does suckle just fine and is very into it but I noticed that when he is really hungry and cranky he gets kinda aggressive on the boob lol so I think that might have been one reason my nipples have become so sore. Its really no biggie I am sure with time and patience he will catch on with no problems.

Punkygirl - It is very painful so that is why I am pumping for a few days instead of letting him make it worse.

It was probably something with lanolin in it, lanolin heals and protects dry and cracked skin. Its really thick too kinda like honey.

Oh throw up is gross. But I think he's still at that age where bodily functions don't smell bad yet, heh. Ouch, my boobs ache for your boobs in sympathy. I know how that goes. It's a good idea to let them rest up. Have you talked to a lactation specialist at all, or did you do that before you left the hospital? It sounds weird, but they can help with the latching thing and the positions and everything.

He is soooo adorable!! I love how you can tell a C-section baby from a vaginal birth baby from the head. :p I love that chair thingy, too.

I responded yesterday but for some reason my post isn't showing or it didn't get posted for whatever reason.

His barf doesn't smell yet thank god lol And the hospital didn't help me at all with breast feeding, all I was told was to pump every 2-3 hours and to bring Alex the milk while in the NICU. No one ever bothered to show me or help me out so I came home and researched it myself.

Thats his swing he is sitting in, in those pics :) He can only stand it for like 1 hour and then he gets cranky. I know once he is older he will enjoy it a lot more.

Alex went to his 1st doctors visit today! I loved the pediatrician she is super nice and very thorough. I told her about my RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) but since there is not test for it we will just have to keep an eye on Alex to make sure he doesn't start showing any signs of having it which may take years like it did for me. He also had to get poked for a newborn screening test which he did not like and I almost cried when he did but he was brave and only cried for like 5 secs and then happily sucked on his pacifier. In November Alex maybe going in to be circumcised we are still kinda undecided, the pediatrician said that it just needs to be done before he weighs 10lbs which will be awhile. I do not want to get it done and am firm in my decision so whatever my hubby decides, we are really trying to make the decision together and come to some sort of agreement.

Alex has only gained 6 ounces so weighs 5lbs 14 oz now and has gained 1 inch. So he is now 19 inches hehe

He is growing! I hope he does not grow to fast though.

His next check up is in December and then he will get shots then as well.

He is growing alot! And I think it is great (by the way) for a kid to be exposed to animals from the begining, and it is great that he will be around them when he is a kid because that makes him more likely to be kind and loving to animals as an adult. My friends little brother who is about 7 or 8 wasn't raised around animals and when he would come to my house and hold my mice I would make excuses to put them back like they were sleepy and stuff because he was WAY to rough and would swing them all over the place.. They didn't even get a dog til like 2 years ago and the boy still likes putting his arms around my dogs necks, I have to keep him away from them.

And yep.. We did get Weezer. As you saw on the Ferret Forum. :D

I am really hoping that since he will grow up around animals that he will learn to be responsible for another life and will know how to properly treat an animal. I think it will make him a much better person in general. Plus he will learn the PROPER way to care for animals such as diet, housing, etc. I know when I was a kid my mom fed our dog the cheapest food possible and all that, at the time I thought it was okay... now I know better of course.

Punkygirl - I know what you mean but actually a lot of mixed babies are light skinned to begin with and some darken up as they grow and some do not. I have seen a lot of light skinned mixed kids. He will look more and more mixed as he grows, its just hard to tell since he is so young. My hubby teases all the time that Alex looks white lol But I do see some of my husbands characteristics in Alex like his nose for example, he has his daddy's nose for sure!

kat - Yeah losing 20lbs in two weeks is pretty nice lol I should be back to my pre-pregnancy weight in no time if I keep going at this rate. I know like 10lbs of that weight was partially Alex, the placenta, water, etc but even 9-10lbs in 2 weeks is pretty nice.

The animals are very use to him now. I let them all sniff him under my supervision and they all did great. I know they were really curious about him but now they just ignore him. Zoe is very alert around him and always perks up when he makes any sort of noises. Its cute :)

I do not want anymore kids for at least 3-4 years... it is so hard having 2 really young children at the same time but a 3-4 year old and a new baby won't be as difficult.

One baby right now is hard enough for me lol especially since I do have my animals to take care of as well. Having TWO babies or real young kids right now would be extremely difficult.

I see you also got hermit crabs and another leopard gecko, thats awesome.

And hey at least your rats are dying of old age, they had a great life with you :) It still really sucks when they pass on. I have 3 older ferrets that I have 2-3 years left with and I will be very sad when they die even though I know I gave them the best life possible.

I wish ferrets lived longer! It sucks they only live 6-8 years on average. Maybe I will be lucky and mine will live longer.

He has changed a lot! He is much more active and weighs about 7lbs now, we go into the doctors December 17th so we will see exactly how much he weighs. He is a lot more interested in his surroundings now and doesn't sleep as much as he did when he first came home.

Alex is now 47 days old, man he is growing so fast! He really has filled out a lot, you can really see it in his face and he is getting chunkier hehe... all that breast milk is sure turning my little man into a chunk lol j/k

I'm still (probably too) tiny.
My sister is only six and small (height wise) but her muscles are bigger than mine and she's a 6pack and all, lol.
She's.. something like 3stone and besides the fact I'm about 5yrs older than her I'm 3, 3 1/2, which is mad.

Caitandcritters - Things are going pretty well. He is still up every 2 hours to eat which kinda sucks... I sure do miss sleeping in until noon! LOL but since I get up earlier in the day I do accomplish more which does make me feel good.

My husband wants him circumcised but hasn't pushed the issue so I have just ignored it, once Alex is past that 10lb point he won't have it done haha so I am just waiting it out LOL

Still every two hours? YIKES. I would have thought he'd last longer between feedings. Hmmmms. I'd just keep quiet about the circumcision, eventually he will forget.

Yep still every 2 hours, it sucks. But breast milk digests faster than formula so that is the only reason I can think of that he is eating so much still. I call him my chunka munk cause he is getting chubby lol I will ask the pediatrician when I go in on 12/17 and see what she says about it.

I am gonna be traveling with him by plane by myself in December up to WA state, I wonder what that is gonna be like. Oh well at least it is only a 2.5 hour flight non stop.

I have more pics, I gotta resize them, I will get them up tomorrow.

That makes sense. Have you considered giving him formula for one of his evening feedings? It might help him sleep longer at night, for your sake.

Oo planes! I had to take Tanner on a bus/subway one time when he was real little. Keep him covered so people don't think they can just touch him. Germy germy people.

His personality is really starting to show through. He giggles and laughs ALOT now and he can even roll over onto his tummy all by himself. Its just so amazing to see him change and grow, I love it! And I love being a mom :)

I was reading a card a friend of my moms had given her when me and my brother were born. And it said something like "Cherish all the memories with them, they will be in college before you know it!"...and here I am, in college. Time does fly. Like my friend Samantha, her son is a year and 4 months old, and her second son is due in May. (Shes will be 20 with 2 kids)
