I have one of the wire wheels that have both the vertical and horizontal wires on it so that the hamsters foot won't get stuck. It's not mesh, but I thought the holes were small enough...
Unfortunately, I was wrong. Opie, my hamster, had gotten his foot caught in one of the holes, how long his foot was caught in there is uncertain, but I got him out, and he's limping a little bit. I don't think he'll be able to run on a wheel anymore. But I covered the wheel with thick paper so if he ever does go onto it, there is no possible way for his foot to get caught.
So, if you have a wheel where there just might be a possibility for your hamster's foot to get caught, I suggest you get a plastic wheel, a mesh one, or cover the wires with thick paper.
