Sand instead of other?

ok I've used shavings and now I'm using carefresh (using for about 6-7 months now) I saw some picture here with the bin cages with sand. how good is the clean up? what sand would I use if I did this? Is it heavy? how much do I pet in? And what hamster breeds is it best for?

Any help?
