My dad came home today and asked if I think this shredded-up carpet he got from work would be okay for our Hamster and/or Gerbil. I said "I'll go ask on PetsHub" so here I am, lol.
Also, I doubt it but I have a bag of Polyester Stuffing I was going to use to make a stuffed bear out of that never happened. Would that be okay for them?
I havent used either of it yet, I figured Id ask first. The carpet is shredded very small, so it isn't long or stringy..

Even though it isn't long, I would still be a bit worried about the hamster/gerbil choking on the carpet. Same with the stuffing, actually. I know that it's inside a lot of small animal toys and accessories, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. Both of those are going to smell quicker than regular bedding, anyhow.

I think Id prefer it over the regular bedding we have, though. We were thinking of it more for a sleeping area since the carpet is really soft.
Anyways though, the only bedding our store has is pine/cedar which is why I was thinking this might be better. Maybe I could just give them some napkins P:

I'm sure that if you look around, pine and cedar aren't your only options. Even the Walmart here sells aspen. If yours doesn't, go to a pet store and they will definitely have other options for you.
You're going to do as you please, but just be careful.

Well I came here for advice, so if I get a sure-fire no I wont use it of course.
We have 1 pet store here and have been there, all they sell is Fish things and cat/dog stuff.
Our Wal*mart only sells Pine and Cedar :/ the only GOOD thing they sell is the yougies and food bowls..
and there is a store thats an hour away that sells Carefresh but my dad thinks its too expensive and wont believe how I say its worth it. He just goes on about how we've had them almost 2 years and they are perfectly fine..

Yogies aren't a good thing... they're just plain sugar, and that's not healthy for small animals.
If you really can't find anything but pine and cedar, then use towels or fleece... something where there is little danger of choking.
Even if they weren't to choke, carpet fibers surely aren't good for their lungs, and certainly no good for chewing.

towels and such usually can cause choking. my friend tried it and they ripped it up into little shreds and tried eating it. I would advice against it.
At Walmart, ask about other beddings. they may have some hidden in the back or in a different area, you never know.
As for the shredded carpet, it may work, I'd say try a small amount and see how it goes. I dont think it would be much better than the towel other than the fact its already ripped up for them

CareFresh is definitely worth it, I live in a condo and the wood bedding makes the place smell (even after I cleaned the cage). CareFresh is the best thing ever invented for hamsters, I buy the $24 / bag size..good thing I work and make my own money, otherwise, I probably wouldn't be able to afford it and/or my parents would never buy it for me.
