I use aspen bedding, but even in the winter my hammies seem to be plenty warm. You could maybe give them a few cotton balls/ fabric scraps to put in their nest.

Cedar bedding is not good for hamsters. Use either aspen or carefresh. You can rip up some tissues for them. The sand is for cleaning, the hamsters roll in it and it cleans their fur. If you put some chinchilla sand (not dust) in a small bowl, they will roll/dig in it. Sand is not a necessity, however.

Agreed with PetLuver. Cedar is horrible, it irritates their eyes and causes respitory problems. I would say your best bet for them to keep warm would be buy some of that bedding (or use toilet paper) and get a house for them (you can buy them or just use a little cardboard box). Put the bedding in there and they will make a home in it hopefully and sleep in there. THe house will help to keep the heat in that one area. the sand wont do anything except if they feel like rolling in it.

do they literally go under the shavings or do they build a huge mound that then covers them over. If they are building a huge mound thats like a nest for them and thats completely normal and they may not be cold at all. Its also normal for them to sleep together whether its cold or not
