I know PH is dead, but I was just wondering who still checked in. Runky, you there?
Basically, just reintroduce yourself. What do you do with horses? What diciplines? What breed is your horse? How old?
I have American Saddlebreds. I have lived with them all my life, and am well aware of how incredibly lucky I am to live the life I do. I cannot imagine waking up knowing I couldn't look out my window and see my broodmares, or watch babies grow up, or pregnant mares foal.....Life just cannot exist without horses.
I am an avid supporter of all things Saddlebred. Showing, breeding, Saddlebred Rescue, trail riding, ASB Versatility. . .
We currently have over thirty horses. Most are broodmares and babies, some are retired loves, and some are young prospects and show horses.
Here are two of my yearlings.
This is Zoltan. He is my In-Hand colt for this year. He is as nice a colt as we have raised.

This guy, some of you may remember as Pixie's Foal. He's getting so big. Here is my Daniel. He is the ugliest colt I think I have ever seen, but he is a sweetie....and really he is so ugly he's cute. I love him to death. I've never had a horse with his personality. My Danny-Bear.

Well..I don't have horses but I do visit the horse forum. I have done lots of research on horse care because in the future I want to have a couple. I have very little hands on experience with horses. I took riding lessons when I was twelve, but got bucked off for the first time and got scared away. And I learned a few things during my lessons that I haven't done since then. I do visit the stable near my house to photograph the horses though.
In the future I really want a Clydesdale, and a few quarter horses. (I like all my animals to be rescues..so thats the way I will be going when I get my horses..except probably for the Clydesdale, unless theres a rescue for them too.
Looks like you lost all the actual horse owners mokey lol.

hah, I check in from time to time to see if there are any pictures. Mostly I stick to the Ultimate Horse Site. P:
Mm. I've been riding only a little over a year now. I'm currently getting ready for my first show season which I'm pretty excited about. I'll be eventing on the horse I half lease, Jolly, at the beginner novice level. (:
Yeah, so I ride 2 horses. First is Sarge, the love of my life and my forever horse. We had a rough patch last year but we worked through it and now our bond is unbreakable. Sarge is doing so well. He has his moments still but he's just a totally different horse than the one I knew just one year ago. He listens so well (well... mostly. haha.). We've actually lunged him over a few jumps in the last couple of months. He's not really built for it so he isn't exactly the most beautiful jumper. haha. And I actually got bucked off him when I stupidly decided to trot him over a log in the field. xD Umss. Yeah. Basically, Sarge and I are inseparable. <3 (:
On Saint Patrick's Day. hah.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg82/Runky3/Horses/S6301938.jpg
From last week. On that day he happened to run off with me... twice. He's such a little stinker. Px

Last week when he was sunbathing. <3
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg82/Runky3/Horses/S6302067.jpg
And the other horse I ride is Jolly. He is a 16 year old Paint. I half lease him from a girl who never rides him. So I get him all to myself. hah. So far he's taught me sooo much. He's taught me about frames, flying lead changes, jumping, you name it. He's a really great horse. And like I said before, I'll be eventing with him this summer. He loves to show. =D
Jollypoooo.

Oh I LOVE Sarge! I have been wondeirng how he has been doing!
Jolly is gorgeous. Isn't it amazing that horses are usually the ones that teach us. I count Harry and a couple others among the ones who raised me.
Punky, Saddlebred Rescue often gets in Belgians. In however many years it will be until you have yours, you should really check in there.
I am IN LOVE with Bo Bice, from SBR. I dream about him. He is broke to ride and drive, is registered, and is gorgeous. I almost told my boss's wife how pretty she'd look behind a pleasure driving horse, and that I knew the perfect one....

haha. Do you remember last year when I would always come on here and talk about how horrible Sarge was. teehee. xD Now he's amazing. He always comes to greet me at the gate and INSISTS I get him out. And he's such a respectful little man. He still likes to test me from time to time but I don't let him get away with anything. He's a little twit sometimes. xD Oh and he had his 5th birthday this year. He's growing up so fast. It's crazy. P;
Dude. Horses have taught me more than any person ever could. Not even kidding. They're amazing. =3
I've heard of this Bo Bice horse I think... But then, I know absolutely nothing about the gaited horse world. Px
Oh. And here's a video from Sarge's first ever "jumping lesson". haha. xD

Yes, I do remember that!
Hah, that is so cute. Hey, he is jumping it. That is good enough for me! Hah. Man, how old is he now?
He'd look pretty on the trails....Hehehe.
Here is the topic on Bo. I doubt you would have heard of HIM. His registered name is the Professional. His Amish family loved him so much that they sold him to SBR so they would KNOW that he would get a good home.
http://forum.saddlebredrescue.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1497
He is pretty much as broke as could be when it comes to driving. Just watch the video here where they were testing his suitability as a carriage horse.

Ello! I wish I had a horse but i'm a country girl trapped in the city and will have a horse of my own eventually....I want a TB, a mustang, a quarter horse and possibly a mini pony and mini mule because there just so darned cute! As soon as I can go to collage...I'm getting all A's and B's so hopefully I will go to UC Davis and I'm told you can keep horses there! :P But eventually I will own a pet store with:
a petting zoo
a grooming salon
a vet clinic (which I will own and work there!)
animal adoptions
and then when I go home I could ride my horses:)hehe
*looks off day dreaming*

Lone Star, Petshub dropped off the face of the earth.
Keep in mind Aleandra, that most students who board thier horses on campus at college are Equine Students. I am going to Midway this fall(about half an hour away from Lexington KY) and if I were to bring my horse, it would be at least $500 per month to keep them there.
And I like your plan for an all encompasing pet shop. . . I had similar plans at your age(I was BIG into the Black Stallion books) and had my own racing farm all planned out to the trees down the driveway. . . Hahaha. . . I found those the other day. They were cute.

i havent been on here in awhile. im still riding that big old qh with the blaze. im working with a new trainer that has shown in high jumpers and level 5 dressage. My riding has improved soo much. Im hoping to get a job this summer so i could lease this tb im riding so that i will be able to show. if i do show ill probably show 2nd level dressage and do some hunter/jumper classes. adn then maybe next year go into eventing which shouldnt be too hard for me considering im already doing dressage and jumpers. in the next couple weeks im gonna have my brother or mom come out to take a video of me riding. I find taking videos of you riding really helps becuase then u actually see what mistakes ur making.

I just got back from one of the Major Saddlebred Auctions. I was so lucky, I got to video it both days. The video was simulcast live on the ASHA website. It was grand fun, and I got paid more than I would have working two weeks at my normal job(which I only keep for cheap movies and popcorn). The only thing, after eight hours of videoing, two days in a row, my shoulders are KILLING me!
I just about bought about five different horses, but neither mom, nor dad was around so I sat on my hands. Sooo close. . . haha.
Soooo.......we had our first baby this morning. A little bay filly. She looks like a buffalo, but she is cute.

And Runky, I forgot, that top picture is real nice. I like how Jazz's forelock is longer than her mane in the second picture! Hah, too cute.
Baby number two is due....anytime now. Actually four weeks ago, but she is progressing and starting to show more signs. Hopefully, the baby is still okay. I'm not all that worried, but the late mares always get me on edge.

haha, good luck with your plan Aleandra!
Man, I remember doing all those plans when I was your age. I remember going through all the dog breeds, "Okay, I am going to have this one, and this one, and after those are settled, get this one...." I still really want a Pharoah Hound. I DID get my sheltie though. I wanted one since I was ten. When I got my first job, one of my first major purchases was a computer, and then next was my Sheltie. She's a good horse-show buddy.
My most recent fantasy, now that I have been playing Zelda on my Wii, is to have a Belgian mare, and, of course, name her Epona. Mom said I should look at Halflingers.

04-23-08, 03:40 PM 04-23-08
Heh, I still check in at times.
So, introduction. I work at a horse rescue, that also take in boarders, and have a riding school part as well, to help things go 'round. My main tasks is cleaning crap and riding ponies, since I'm shrimp-sized. My boss generally keeps me away from interaction with humans, since I'm a bitch. I do a lot of general work with the horses, mainly I'm an excercise rider. (I can't spell worth shit.) And lots of groundwork. According to my boss, I have great instincts when it comes to horses, but I rarely know why I do what I do. (Boss: "That was good, but why did you do it like that?" Me: "...cause it felt right?" Boss: "*unamused*")
I like to babble at times. I talk to most horses non-stop.
I love jumping. Love love love. I've smacked up my ribs good more than once though (often unrelated to jumping), so I'm really not supposed to. I've kinda gone over to just trail riding more. I do half-assed dressage, but I can never remember anything.
I have two horses. To be honest, they're not fully mine, and my boss takes care of most of their expenses. But, generally speaking, they're mine.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l273/blackbruises/furkids/horses/Sleipner.jpg
Sleipner. Supposedly an arabian mix, but we dunno for sure (rescue). She's my first horse, I got her five years ago (man, time flies). She's estimated to around 12-13 years now. She's very popular with others too and is used for lessons once or twice a week. She's a lovely all-round horse. X3
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l273/blackbruises/furkids/horses/Psycho14h.jpg
Psycho. <3 We were told he's a danish warmblood, but after seeing another danish warmblood I doubt it. XD He's nine years old, I got him when he was five. Or, rather, he arrived at the rescue when he was five, after a series of bad homes. Psycho wasn't his original name, he got that nickname from the way he was acting (though before he came here). He's done wonderful progress lately, and I no longer worry that he'll kill me. <3 He's also an amazing jumper.
...I will stop babbling now. XD But, since y'all are talking about Pharaoh Hounds, I just gotta throw in a pic of my mix, Anubis.

Aleandra, I have actually seen some episodes of that show. XD The gay couple annoyed the hell out of me though so I stopped bothering with it.
And people are seriously uncreative with names for pharaoh hounds. XD Every other pharaoh dog I encounter seems to be named Anubis. =X I've been thinking about renaming him, but I do like Anubis-the-god. D:
Mokey, thanks. XD He's totally a basenji in a pharaoh hound's body. He's a bit smaller than a purebred and has a weird tail, but other than that and the fact that his personality is all basenji, he's good at tricking people. XD

04-24-08, 04:50 PM 04-24-08
yes Monkeybird, I still do 4-H;) I actually have a show this weekend, I just gave my bunny a bath with warm water and bunny shampoo. She looks like a wet rat:) She's really pissed at me though:) So first she's happy, she gets to come out and run around the guest house (she's staying at my dad's house, my mom's outta town) and then suddenly this stupid person has flipped over "her" couch (she goes into the couch) and has grabbed her scruff. Then they put her into a wierdo bucket (aka the bathtub) and she has to stay still while someone massages her with sweet-smelling stuff and then washes off with warm water:P Then she has to wait while she's cuddled in a towel and THEN she has to sit on a soft blanket in a cat carrier while she gets her dog crate cage cleaned:P As soon as I put her back, she kinda looks at me like "hmph!" and then she's been cleaning herself eversince. She's really peaved that I would even THINK she needs a bath. :P Lol...anyways, I started out with western for about 6 months and then I've been riding on and off english for about 5 years.:) It's funny though, because this one horse, Alaska (they all have state names) is a pony with a pissy attitude and whenever they assign him to me he is in shock because I am the only person who doesn't need a crop to control him (or any horse for that matter..I'm 5'8) I don't believe in crops either...I personally think I wouldn't do whatever the person wanted me to do if they hit me, it would just make me more pissed:P..also, "show moms and dads" is funny:P So dramatic!!

I remember you Bilbo! Glad you checked in.
Well, I am sad to report that one of our mares aborted her foal a couple days ago, because of Tent Caterpillars. Poor thing. She was due in August. The baby was just getting hair around its muzzle and eyes and was about the size of a small medium sized dog. I just hope our other mares were not affected. It is very sad.
I did forget to post pictures of our second baby though. He and the filly hit it off right from the start.

At the end of July I go to the state I love, NY. I go upstate and my dad's gf's parents own a lakehouse and it so much fun but on top of that, it's near a popular children's farm (http://www.oldmcdonaldhasafarm.com/)
were I work in the summer and its super big and super fun:D They have everything from a camel to horses (mini and regular sized) to kittens that people drop off there. I also got a new camera and a gift card for riding lessons so....:)

Camels are fun.
Well, I braided Daniel's mane tonight. He has a worse part down his mane than I do. He was such a cutie. LOVES his shoulders and withers scratched. He about fell over. I feel bad I haven't been able to see him much lately.
I need to get to work on my fillies if I want to show them.

Things have been going amazing with le ponys. I love summer. They're all so well behaved. haha. xD
Sarge is jumping now. And he's doing better than I ever expected. I'm not sure of exact heights but I'd say the highest I've jumped him so far is 2 ft. Right now I'm just working on building his confidence. He had his first show a few weeks. hah. He got 4th out of 7 horses. And I figured we would get last. Ums, Sarge and I are like crazily bonded to each other. It's amazing. I love him so much. (:
Jolly and I are also fabulous. Our dressage is getting so much better. Our flying lead changes are getting much better too. Ums. He comes to me in the field sometimes which is huge for him. He doesn't come to anyone. So we've gotten pretty close too since I started riding him.
I've given up on the grandparent's horse, Chyanne. It's as hopeless as the situation with Sarge was last year. I rode her twice. First time was really short and she was good. Second time she reared and tried to kill me. hah. yeah. So screw that.

Just thought I'd say that I'm taking Sarge and Jolly to a show on the 28th. It's just combined test so no XC. I'm not sure but I think I might just do a jumper round with Sarge since we haven't really worked much on dressage. I'll definatly do both dressage and showjumping with Jolly.
Oh and this Sunday I'm taking Sarge and Jolly to the Roanoke Valley Horse Show to school over the jumps. Very exciting. =3
I'm going to try and post pictures of the show here. Sarge has improved a tonnn in the last couple of weeks. (:

well I just wanted to give an update:
I'M FINALLY GETTING MY OWN FRIGGIN' HORSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YEESSSSSSSSS....ok so, my uncle has two mares. One saddlebred(donno if I'm saying it right, too happy to think clearly) and one pinto...the pinto was "taken advantage of" by a neighor's stallion who got loose and broke through the fence. Soooo...guess who gets the filly/colt? :D

Oh lord. They are "giving" you the baby?
You know the saying(if not heed it well) "Green + Green = Black and Blue."
The other is a saddlebred? That is awesome.

Well speaking of babies, we had our last one of the year this morning. A little bay stud colt. He is SOO sweet. He has his mother's personality, and is marked like two of our other babies. Star and snip. And he has the most HOOKEY ears. Looks like he has horns. Oooh, he is exciting.
Also, I don't think I introduced Summer's Filly. She is a black black BLACK filly.

So what are they giving you Aleandra? The foal? Trust me, from one former 4H-er to another, don't try to get foal help from there. Get the help from an experienced trainer. It will cost you a crap-ton of money to get a horse started right and well, but horses are incredibly expensive animals.
When the time comes, I know of a girl in Northern CA who I would highly reccommend.

okie dokie:)...my mom wants my uncle to keep it and she just pay for its care, but he won't train the foal, he doesn't have the time..cuz I mean, I'd rather teach a foal to pick up its legs and load into a trailer than have a full-grown horse acting out and trying to kill me because it won't lift up its legs or load into a trailer.

"I'd rather teach a foal to pick up its legs and load into a trailer than have a full-grown horse acting out and trying to kill me because it won't lift up its legs or load into a trailer."
That's why it's extremely important that you have someone that really knows how to teach that foal how to behave and interact with humans. You yourself isn't experienced enough to properly teach it that.
Cute horses, I love blacks and pintos.

Yes, Aleandra, I know from expereince green + green is not a good combo. God knows how many times Sarge could have killed me back in the day because I didn't know what I was doing. By gosh, I thought I could handle him but I came to the realization that this would only work with an experienced trainer. And it did. Once I got him trained and started riding every single day I could handle him. It took me a few months to really get him listening but now we're all good. But that's only because I had sooo much help from my trainer. So please find someone who knows what they are doing to help you. You want to start a baby out right. You don't want them learning bad things when they are young.
MokeyBird
06-29-08, 07:34 PM 06-29-08
Trust me. Foals are quick and some don't think twice about spinning and kicking. OR they will try to play with you like a horse and can rear up and strike you. They don't know, and make mistakes, and it is imperative that they are taught well from the start. Despite how much you want to, you can't coddle them and treat them like pookums, you can't spoil them, you can't let them get away with a dang thing. Which sucks. I find it really hard sometimes.
You have to learn how much loving is okay.

LOL! Runky, you've gotta try it. That saddle is so flat and thin you have to really work! Hah. Plus with thier movement, your legs feel much longer than they are. They are really a blast to ride. I dare you to try it. I'd almost volunteer to pay for it.
I hope you aren't going over to the evil side of dressage, where nothing is "correct" if it isn't your dicipline. I've gotten into many "Saddleseat is Wrong! Saddlebreds are abused!" discussions. Don't diss it 'til you try it. ;)

Well, my uncle has a saddlebred (the black one) and I ride her like any other normal horse....(with the exception my uncle's not around, he's afraid she'll kill me since I've been bucked off multiple times and when I was 3 and riding her with my cuz she kicked my cuz off and I was riding alone...). Do they have a special gait or are they taught to move like that? Also, I know, on the farm I work at in the summer and she had me working the miniature foals she was going to keep because she uses them for little kid pony rides..tough...

Haha, nah, I'm not trying to diss it. xD I guess I just don't understand it is all. I mean, maybe if I tried it I'd like it but it just seems weird to me. hah.
Just watching them I don't get a lot of stuff. Why are the horses so hyper and uncontrollable? And it really bugs me when they post on the wrong diagonal when the photographer isn't even taking pictures. That's the main thing that gets me, it always bothers me when people are on the wrong diagonal. haha. And then in the 40 years and older class this women who was bouncing around like crazy and was all over the place won! I didn't get that at all. And when they would ask for the canter all of them would, like, line up at a corner so they could get the correct lead. And one class they had to do a simple lead change and none of the riders could do it. I dunno, it's just odd to me I guess. Maybe you have to ride it to understand? I know people who don't ride a certain discipline can make wrong observations because they've never done that so I'm not trying to be like "omg, my discipline is better". hah.

Well it is mostly about how the horse performs, not the rider, to tell you the truth. In most classes the presentation of the horse is what is judged, not the bad riding. The horse is usually what is looked at. How well he moves, how he sets his head, how he behaves, how well he does whatever job he is doing.....
I agree though. Some of them couldn't ride a fence post. But if they want to get far, they have to learn a little. The ones that start young are generally your better presented/better in general riders.
Uncontrollable? What did they all do that made them look unconctrollable?
Our horses are trained to be very upright, very energetic, and.... showy! But not uncontrollable. They should be light on the bit and responsive. Key word "should". And yes I know, some are not. I have seen many crow hoppers, spookers, belligerants, "Oh I forgot how to guide!"s, and other incidents where they just look awful.
Some people just put too much horse under thier riders.
Just check out these two links. They will explain a lot.

Meh, I just really don't think I'd like that. I like the fact that I am judged on my riding ability and not just the ability of my horse. I mean, some rich little snobby kid could have some fabulous horse and win by just riding horribly? Just so long as the horse looks good? blahh.
Well. Most of the horses there couldn't even stand still for like 5 seconds. I mean, if my horse wouldn't stand I'd be pretty annoyed. I guess saying they were uncontrollable is a little far but they are just sooo.... hyper... That can't be any fun to ride. How do you accomplish anything when your horse is hyper all the time? haha.
I dunno. It's just so foreign to me. And most of the saddlebred barns around here I've heard bad things about them. One of the girls at my barn used to go to one and she said they wouldn't even allow you to love on your horse or create a bond. That's just not right. I'm sure they're all not like that. But that's what I hear about the ones around here... P;

wait? You are 5'8" and not even in High School. Good lord, honey! Why aren't you on the basketball team? lol :D I'm only 5'4" which is short for my family, but painfully average.
no no no. QH will probably be the way to go(or see below). Off Track Thoroughbreds (OTTB) and TBs in general are very hot. What were TBs bred to do? RUN! Go forward! Go go go! Which is never good for a beginner. I bet, with where Runky is now, she could probably handle an OTTB, because she is motivated and most importantly, she has a trainer/instructor.
Horses are strong creatures. if you are worried about being too big for them, go on a horse forum and ask. Trust me, sometimes it is better to be closer to the ground. If you are worried about height, you could always go draft. Generally laid back and gentle. However they are much more expensive, upkeep wise.
Aleandra, you should read back in Runky's posts about Sarge. Whoo she had troubles! lol
What everyone's first horse should be, no matter the breed(there are good ones in each breed and a LOT of good QHs), especially since a lot of people are not equipped with the resources/knowledge to teach a horse, should be a half a million years old, DONE EVERYTHING, mellow laid back, broke to death, still will do anything, kind of horse. Especially if they are not going to have the money or other resources to keep it in serious training.
It costs at the very least $300 a month just to board a horse, more if you want to get your horse trained, more if you want both stall/pasture turnout, more still if you want special feed.... Horses are horribly expensive.
Here is a joke my dad used to tell as a kid. What do you have to know to train a horse? More than the horse.
Horses are teachers, more than anything.( Right Runky? ) Your first horse should know more than you, in order to teach you what you need to be doing. ("I know that when she does this I do that." not you going, "How do i get him to do this?") Because if you don't know what you need to be doing, or how or why a horse thinks/acts/breaths the way he does, how can you think of teaching one anything. They are not like dogs. Dogs are easy compared to a horse, because they are predators. WE are predators. Horses are prey.
Trust me, the only horses under five years old you will see in a Lesson Program, are either for very advanced riders, or are those horses who were "born to be a lesson horse"(they learned thier lessons quickly and dependantly, and had that "I am safe" attitude.) My yearling Daniel is already showing that he wants to be a good thinking, calm, willing kind of guy. I have great hopes for that kid.
The only reason I work with baby horses, is because I have gotten the training to do so. I am one of those exponentially lucky souls that was raised in a stable. I broke my first horse to lead at 12(see my avatar, there she is). I love baby horses, because you don't have to FIX anything that another person did.
But I know that I can only get them so far. Right now, I can break them to lead, lunge, pick up all four feet, clip, trot in hand, trust, and a couple other things. I am learning how to longline so that I can do more, and I am learning with my dad how he starts one riding and so forth.
Horses are a continual learning experience.
I'd love for you to learn more Aleandra. If you want, you can message or email me anytime, and I can suggest some great forums. I bet runky could too.

I'm a Junior next year. So 2 years until I have to think about college. ha. I'd really like to stay local though because I don't think I could stand leaving Sarge and my barn for that long. And I know I couldn't afford to board him at college with me. Good lord, colleges have expensive boarding fees. o.O So I'm thinking I'll go to some community college then maybe onto Virginia Tech. Maybe. I don't really wanna go to college but I suppose I should. hahaha. xD
---
Yeah. For your first horse you really need to look for something that's extremely mellow and laidback. An older horse that's been there and done that. A push button horse. Especially if you don't have a trainer to work with you often. I know you feel like you can handle something younger but you can't. When I was a beginner I thought I could handle anything. And yeah, I was way wrong. hah. You don't want a baby. They're not going to be fun for you in the long run if you can't handle one. They will take advantage of you.
With Sarge. I'm really lucky he didn't hurt me or kill me really. He was really out of control and he knew he could take advantage of me. I remember he used to buck just when I was leading him around. He also had this horrible biting problem which was my fault for hand feeding him. I remember times when he tried to lay down on me and when he would try to run me over in the field. And back when I was actually riding him he would take me up the hill and threaten to buck me off. He would take me around the field in an effort to get me off his back. And I ended up falling off him and I really didn't ride him after that.
The only reason that he worked out for me is because I found an amazing trainer who helped me through all his issues. Plus I rode a push button horse to really learn to ride on and I rode pretty much every single day. Not to mention 3+ lessons a week with my awesome trainer. All of this costed a buttload of money, o' course, but it's totally worth it.
Also, a quarter horse would make a great first horse as long as it is experienced and everything like I said before. It really doesn't matter what breed as long as it has been there and done that. As for size. I'm 5'7" and Sarge is only 15hh and he can easily hold me. Although I do like my horses to be a bit bigger because I feel like I fit them more.
Just please don't get more than you can handle. It won't end well. hah.

thanks you guys!:D It's funny, when I was little I wanted to be a jockey...XP....poor horse would loose every race! I know throughbreds are powerful, the night I dropped Buddy off at my 4-H leader's house, she showed me her horse but goes "don't try to ride him, he's bucked off my adult son." (like I'd be stupid enough to get up on a horse I don't even know) But he is SWEETEST horse I have ever seen. Comes right up and gives you kisses and like to be pet and given attentio, and he's an OTTB. Then again, I know she got extremely lucky with him...I donno..CL has more and more horse advertisings every day...but I decided to do this:
start taking lessons again
after a while with lessons lease a horse (and still take lessons!)
after a few years leasing a horse one day buy one:)
There's a stable across the street from my school but just to take lessons there (not to buy the lessons, just to be able to take lessons) you have to pay some crazy entry fee of like 500 dollars, and then the money for lessons on top of that...so thats shot. It's the same with leasing, boarding, or even helping out there...you gotta pay that entry fee..

That sounds like a wonderful plan. That's kinda what I am doing. I have leased 2 horses over the past year and each have taught me so much. And I'm about ready to find another horse to lease so I can learn even more. Eventually I plan on buying my own horse to event with (Sarge really could only ever do lower level stuff. Probably beginner novice is as far as he'll ever go.). But anyways, that's a great idea. You'll learn so much without actually having to go out and buy a horse. (:

hah, I do love me some big hawses. I got to ride one today. He's like 18hh. It's so weird to go from 15hh to that. haha. My trainer says my next horse to lease or buy or whatever is going to be a big one since I look better on them, what with my long legs and everything.
Oh. And Sarge is getting shoes on the 22nd. That's right, I said shoes. haha. I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm actually looking forward to it. I love me some barefoot horses but I really think the shoes will help him with a lot of stuff. I never thought I'd say that. xD

Yeah, they are expensive. But totally worth it. I get lessons at least 3 times a week. But my trainer lets us pay $150 a month for all our lessons so it's a good deal. Plus my mom baby sits for her and I get free lessons. hah. And if you could start working at the barn you could probably pay for the lessons if they let you do that. I do that as well. Horses are so darn expensive. hah.

My Western Riding Class is $990 a semester, with one day a week riding.
That horse is totally cute Aleandra, and not a bad age at all. Sounds about perfect actually. My beloved Harry is 27 and still is capable of packing my bum around, and seems happy to do it. You need something that has been there and done that and been everywhere in the world twice. Those are the best because you can do so much with them.

I was just wondering what people's view on the BLM roundups of wild horses are?
Sorry, I was watching Cloud and Cloud's Legacy on youtube.....just curious..

Those suckers are HOT. My favorite Clinician said that if you can train a wild mustang successfully, then you can train anything. They are the pure essence of WILD. They are so pure, so quick, sure footed, free thinking, and yes, so dangerous. They are incredibly smart animals who learn fast, but they are very much wild animals in comparison to your every day QH or domesticated horse.
One of my friends in Texas is taking that clinician's 100 day challenge with two yearling 'Stangs. She blogs about her progress and it has been such a trip watching her babies grow.
About the round ups. Personally, I think they are better than just going out an shooting them(which has been brought up recently). From what I understand, they get overpopulated easily and with a low, human induced number of wild, natural predators to help control the population, we have to take responsibility for them.
Just my take. If they can be taken and put to use by the people who adopt them, then they will not have to be euthanized.

07-15-08, 08:00 PM 07-15-08
I donno....I personally think its kinda mean to end a horses freedom and injure many horses in the process from running too far to fast. Why not geld the stallions and let them go again?
MokeyBird
07-15-08, 08:15 PM 07-15-08
Mean is letting them starve each other to death.
Gelding costs a lot of money, and gelding is not natural. Plus, only the strongest, fittest, most dominant stallion is going to be able to breed. THAT stallion is not determined by us. We can't go gelding at random.
I was watching a show on mustangs several years ago. One mare in the herd had just had her baby as her herd started to leave and another different herd approached. As her foal wasn't even standing, she stayed with it while her her left. The stallion of the new herd approached and grabbed the newborn foal that was not of his herd by the neck and shook it to death. I saw this on PBS. It was one of the scariest things I had seen. How is that for mean?
Personally, I think it, like Slaughter, is a necessary evil. If these horses can be taken by those who want them, battle scars and distrust of humans and all, and turn them into useful horses, or just plain pasture pets, then that is better than them just being herded into a pen and shot. Keep in mind though, that those that are turned into simple pasture pets will have a MUCH harder time rehoming them or selling them later on than those who take the time to train them.

I suppose so...Also, thats the documentary Cloud, I saw that sad seen too...(I also saw Cloud's Legacy) But, what happens when BLM splits up a small family group (like Cloud's) what happens then? Poor stallion, what if he were to loose his lead mare? Or what if he himself was to be seperated from his herd? I donno...I guess its better than them being shot like you said...
Runky
07-17-08, 06:41 PM 07-17-08
I haven't really read about it or anything. But I agree with Mokey, it's better than being shot. And besides, our domesticated horses have the sweet life compared with wild horses. If they can find good homes where they can be trained, that's great. Much better than starving to death.
Speaking of mustangs. When I used to volunteer at the horse rescue they had a few wild mustangs. They weren't as wild as one you would have plucked straight from the wild though. They were just extremely untrusting. Everything was scary. I hope they found themselves a nice home. They were sweet. (:

Galloping is fun. And Sarge likes it too. Which is funny because he's so lazy. hah. P:
Today we schooled at Green Hill. And the shoes make him much more confident and sure footed. But there were still quite a few refusals. One log beside the ditches he absolutely hated. I fell off at least 5 times trying to get him over it. He'd be going nicely and then dead stop right before and then I went over his head. But I did get him over it. But it was funny. There was like a training level ditch right beside it. And instead of going over the easy log he decided to go over the big ditch. Yeah, my horse is a genious. haha. xD

Well, you probably were jumping wrong if you hadn't done it before. I've been jumping for more than a year now and I still look pretty crappy. It takes years to perfect and even then there is always something to work on. With a horse who refuses you can't just be like "oh it's the horses fault for refusing". Sarge is just starting to jump and so it's normal for him to refuse as often as he does. It's just so new to him. So when I jump him I get him very forward going into the jump and really push him to the base of it and make him jump it. Once he gets over it once he's just like "wow, that wasn't so hard" and jumps it just fine after that.
'Course that pony just sounds like he was being lazy and taking advantage of you. Or he could just be responding to something you are doing. When I first started jumping Sarge it really hit me that i was looking down every single time I jumped. But with Sarge every single time I look down, he refused. So I learned very quickly to look up. One thing Sarge has taught me to do very well. haha. P;

XC is the freaking shiz. I love it. It is by far the most intense thing I've ever done. And I can't even imagine what it's like to do the upper levels. haha, those jumps are crazy. Yeah, it does seem that way. Some people just have absolutely no interest in such things. And then there are people like me who have always dreamed of being a great rider and when they get the chance they take it. I dunno, I feel like I was just meant to be with horses. My previous trainer and my trainer now both have told me that I have a natural ability for this and once I really learn to ride I'll be a kick butt rider. So, I mean... She is a big moose. She is a little pushy, and loves mints. I rode her today, and she is very much like my old buddy Josie who we lost last year. I did everything with that horse.
Anyway, this mare is just a dream. Point and shoot. Safe, smart, willing, pretty, a five speed.
I just walked and trotted on her today to get a feel for her. My sister got on her, and barely asked her and she picked up her rack like a lady.

So I think I had my first concussion yesterday. hah. So I lunged Sarge in side reins yesterday and he did amazing, btw. So I was gonna hop on him bareback and head back down. I swung my leg over and he started moving. So I was like half way on and he starts trotting off. So I guess I was clenching to stay on and then he starts galloping. So I fall off of course. Hit my head really hard on the ground. I was wearing my helmet like I always do so that's good. hah. But at first my vision was kinda blurred and then my left leg was kinda numb when I first got up. So I went up and got Sarge (he never goes far. hah.). And I just lead him down because I probably shouldn't get on after hitting my head like that. On the way down I remember thinking really weird thoughts. Like questioning what had happened earlier that day and thinking it was a dream. And then I questioned if I was going the right way to the barn or not. hah. And pretty much I don't remember untacking him or anything. It's just kind of a blur until I got home. So I'm thinking it was a concussion? haha. Today my neck is sore and so is my left leg. So I guess I hit my leg weird too. hah, just thought you all might enjoy my little adventure. It's really weird how I can't remember anything from the time after tha fall. Just bits and pieces. Last night I was laying in bed and trying to remember if I untacked him all the way and I could not remember. It was weird. haha. xD

Today we did some crazy jumping in the field with tons of galloping and Sarge was like WHEEEEEEE. I'm so glad he's enjoying himself. But we were worried about him because he took forever to cool down. I walked him around for like an hour and he was still breathing hard. My trainer called the vet and she said he would probably be fine and just keep an eye on him. But he was alright. After a bit his breathing calmed down a bit and I turned him out. I checked on him before I left and he was still breathing a little bit more than usual but much better. And he's eating and drinking so he's fine. We're probably going to put him on alergy stuff though. Probably start him on some other suppliments too since he's jumping and showing now too. P=

The only forum I regularly visit and post on. I love it. Very active and very friendly. Although, it's not working at the moment. blahhhh. D;
So something is wrong with Sarge or something. He was still breathing hard when I got back to the barn. I figured he'd been running around the field so I shrugged it off. But when I went to turn him in I made him go to the gate and he trotted down there. That little amount of work made him start breathing really hard. So I tied him up and sprayed him off in case he was hot. Then I walked him around. Walking him around makes him breath faster. I trotted him and he was breathing pretty hard for that. So we gave him a bute and wetted down his hay. I'm going to check on him later and see how he's doing and if he's breathing funny still I'm going to give him some antihistamine(sp?). I'm kind of worried. I was reading about COPD in horses because I remember at the horse rescue 2 of the horses had it and it affected their lungs. And his symptoms sound very similar to what I read. Ugh... Hopefully we can get the vet out to see him tomorrow. /:

Vet is probably coming tomorrow. I personally really think he has COPD but we'll see what she says. And Nikki thinks the lump is a hemotoba (sp?) which seems likely to me. He probably hit himself on something in that new paddock. I can't wait to see what we're going to do for him. I hate not knowing what's wrong with him.

'Ight. So apparently he is breathing much harder than normal and it wasn't just my imagination. A normal horse breathes 2 times in 10 seconds and Sarge was breathing like 8 times in 10 seconds. She says there's something up with his bronchial something and he has inflammation in the lungs or something like that. She took blood and she's going to test it for infection just in case. Then probably give him steroids and antihistimine, I believe. But he's going to be fine. But he does get some time off from work, obviously. My little goober. x3

Sorry but referring to any child in that manner, behind their back or not is wrong, u never know who's watching.
Can u tell I work with kids? lol
MokeyBird
07-29-08, 05:36 PM 07-29-08
I agree with Aleandra. Granted, it is not the kid's fault. It is their parents, along with possible genetic conditions, which would still tie back to being the parents fault. I feel sorry for the overweight children in my area.
What I hate are the excessively overweight "riders" who just sit there and bounce on their poor little gem horses. There was this one lady at a show I went to not long ago, who probably is the nicest gal in the world, who probably couldn't reach her saddle horn. And she insisted on trotting her poor little qh everywhere, in 90 degree weather, on the gravel driveway of the showgrounds.
Then the fat rednecks who bring thier underweight racking horses to the fair, and ride "with their feet through the reins". Granted racking horses aren't hard to ride. So it is okay for those big dumb gorrillas. They don't have to learn anything. They just have to sit there and go "he-yaw".
There is nothing that makes me angrier than fat people with thin animals. Which are all what these stupid racking horse people who come to my local fair have. Their horses look like a lineup for a kill auction. And some of the "riders" look like they weigh more than their horses.
AleandraOwens20
07-29-08, 05:46 PM 07-29-08
eh, I dont mean to insult overwieght kids, just saying, it always tends to be the larger, older kids who want to ride the mini horse and the smaller, thinner kids who want to ride the donkey. I try to tell the kids how much funner it is on the donkey, but, no go :(. And then the parents just smile and take pictures..grrr...sorry to insult anyone, just kinda frustrating..plus, im almost always on the animals side lol.
Runky
07-30-08, 10:23 AM 07-30-08
They should have a limit on the childs weight on certain ponys. Then you can be like "it's a rule, you have to ride the bigger one". I wouldn't let some fat kid sit on a tiny pony. It's just cruel to the animal.
God. I hate it when big fat women are on these tiny little quarter horses. And I'm just thinking "woman... either lose some weight or get a huge draft horse that can hold all that wieght". And it's always the western riders. It's so dumb.
And yeah, I always see these super bad riders riding gaited horse (or racking? I don't know the difference..). And they just sit there in their tennis shoes and pull on their horse's mouth. And I'm just thinking "yeah, try riding my horse. You'd probably be off in the first 5 seconds". Maybe I'm wrong but it just seems like a lot of stupid people own gaited or racking or whatever their called horses. But whatever. hah.

And his owner didn't come out today. I think they may be coming friday or saturday. Not sure. But whatever. I was happy. hah.

So what happened to Tony (it was Tony, right...?)? He was a cute little guy. (:
Show today. I thought my dressage sucked. He wasn't collected at all and we weren't bending. But we were moving more forward. Showjumping was nuts. I tried it with my spurs (it was fine in warmup but he just gets so hyped up in the ring and I get messed up and accidently spur) and so yeah, we were a whee bit speedy. haha. Lesson learned, no spurs during SJ for Jolly. Oh and I lost my stirrup and jumped the swedish oxer without it. hah. But we got through with no faults. And get this..... we got 2nd... hah. It just kinda blew my mind that they liked that. I thought I did amazing last show and we got 7th. I thought we did horrid today and we get 2nd. Mm, yeah, I'm confused. haha. xD But whatev, I'm happy. (:

Tony is growing up in the field right now. We *almost* had him sold, but the people didn't pay on him. He is two and broke to ride. He's still my spooks. I'm the only one who can touch him in the field, and then not often. He has latched on to the two yearling girls, Blue and Princess, so he won't be hard to catch when we bring them all in this winter.

i ride at a dressage/H/J facility and there is a new boarder who brings in a saddlebred. Can u just imagine what a stir this caused. the people at my barn show at USDF and A or AA shows. i feel bad for her. i being mostly a dressage rider would feel uncomfortable being in a barn that isnt. she must have nerves of steel.

Yeah. I couldn't imagine moving to, like, a saddlebred barn. haha, that'd be weird. But honestly, my barn is super excepting of anybody... as long as they aren't a weirdo that is. haha. We do have one really weird person at my barn. She thinks her horse talks to her or something. She's super annoying and picky too. haha, sorry off topic. xD

theres this lady at the barn who has this warmblood who colics alot and she hired this lady who supposedly "talks to horses" to ask the horse why he colics so much. if that isnt a waste of money than i dont know what is. I have nothing against saddlebreds but at my barn where there are mostly tb's, warmbloods and a few qh's and paints that one saddlebred really stands out. the horse is pretty cute though. i know the owner went to milwuakee for championships.

Oh poor love. I bet she has already been whispered about. If you are curious about what she is doing, go and ask, or encourage people to ask, what she is doing and don't just assume. I know of several people who have to board at other-dicipline barns. They go do their thing and have to ignore a lot of crap. I feel sorry for them.
At least if a H/J-er went to a saddlebred barn, they wouldn't be shunned. They wouldn't have people whispering about their supposed "bad practices" or false assumed cruelties. They would be left alone to do their thing. Just wait. If that lady has a show horse, you will soon hear about the horse's broken tail, cruel soring chains, and her tieing his feet together and other horrible untrue things that are assumed with the breed and dicipline. And the people whispering aren't open minded enough to figure out what is actually going on. They "know" and won't be told how wrong they are. Makes me inexplicably mad.
Anyway...
Oooh, I have been at the World Championships. I got a few bad videos on my phone. I have been having SO MUCH FREAKING FUN!!!! I have been talking to very important people, several of my favorite horses in the world are showing, and I have been able to visit with an incredibly handsome single guy. ;) Goodness, I must say the show is better because he's there.

Honestly around here, it would be harder for someone like me to go to a saddlebred barn. Saddlebred people around here can just be such snobs. Of course, it's probably the same with the hunter barns too. I'm so used to eventing where everyone is so nice and down to earth. I don't think I'll ever do anything else besides this. hah. At my barn we're pretty accepting of anyone who boards here, even if they don't ride like us. Most of us work at the barn as well so we need to be polite to the horse owners too (even if they are irritating as all get out...). P:

rabbits
rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils
guinea pigs
sugar gliders

I don't know, Aleandra. Wouldn't occur to me to check. Skunks are on the X list of things that are not allowed to be alive on the farm. Something finally got the one that killed my new hen. Would have been us, but something got him before we did. Quite frankly, we care more about our things than the things that can harm them.
You do know that you are going to have to take into account your potential Significant Other, among other things, right Aleandra. Trust me, saying "I'll only date a guy who loves this and this and this" is really going to limit your "options". ;) Oh believe me. Do you know how hard it is to find a single horseman?
When you have so many animals you need to take into account each one's attention needs. Not all will require a lot, but I know when you have a lot of something, many of that something is going to be left out in the long run. Especially with the added time consumers of job, school, friends, bf/husband, family, family activities, favorite pets, more care-extensive pets, etc.
So maybe not plan to have all of these things AT ONCE(that might be what you were thinking anyway). :) Heck, we are long lived animals ourselves. We have plenty of time to "experiment" with what you will want without getting overwhelmed. Once one creature dies, get another type. Or if you get something that you find out, you just don't like (it happens, don't deny it. especially with horses), you can sell it to someone who will like it more than you.

Gawd, why do you have the need to have something "exotic"??? Why can't people just be happy with rescuing the animals that mankind has placed in shelters rather than being concerned about collecting exotic species?
There were only two things on her list that I would consider "exotic". The ground squirrels and kinkajous. I couldn't even tell you what they were. Skunks are actually pretty common anymore.
Last I checked, a dog or cat isn't the same as a skunk, or a hedgehog, or a ferret. There is nothing wrong with a little variety. It is okay to want any of these animals, so long as they are taken care of properly.
Since she has stated that these are future plans you have no reason to judge her on her unknown situation in the future or her level of assumed knowledge now. She doesn't know. You don't know.
Future is future. Animals have no concept of this. They only care about now. They have memory of the past, but do not dwell on it. Why do we do this? Humans are odd creatures.
Why do you feel the need to come harrass her everywhere she goes. This is a kind 30 something page thread. Please keep it that way. Go start a thread about how much you hate her, and vent your negative energy here. Being young, she'd probably go try to defend herself and give you plenty of fodder(don't do it Aleandra!).

She was a little white cochin hen. One of my roosters got killed, and the other was SOOOO depressed. He just layed there with his head down. Dad felt bad for him and went to our neighbor and bought three hens for him to cheer him up. He bought two black rocks and a little white show cochin. The black girls slept in the tree with the rooster the first night, and had a good healthy fear and caution about people and other animals.
The cochin was very handled, and that type doesn't really roost. They prefer nests, which made her very vulnerable. Poor love, I liked her a lot. She would fall asleep in my lap and was very good about teaching my nephews(who are afraid of the chickens because the roosters attacked them) that chickens were okay.
Yeah, single horsemen are rare gems that are in high demand. So it is hard to find them. I have found maybe one, even though he is almost too old for me. Of course I have hopes. lol

And back to horses. My mare and I are doing so well. She is exactly what I wanted, and she is teaching me alot! She does all five gaits with ease, is not hard to get along with, and she is very pretty. We actually get along quite well. We will be ready to show by next year!
My Daniel is not very bright, but I still love him. He is just quiet and kind of dopey. LOL He is my baby bear. My little late baby is finally a year old, and he's been a "yearling" for the last nine months. He is going to be a year and four month old two year old.
My other colt I REALLY REALLY want to keep for a breeding horse, as a replacement for his ancient sire. He is such a well built colt, he is very talented, and he is a GOOD thinker. Even though he is a baby stud, he hasn't told us yet that he doesn't need to be one.
School is going well. Western is SO WEIRD compared to what I am used to. My first horse and I did not get along well at all. My second horse though, I LOVED! I hope I get paired with him again. He reminds me of my first horse. "Oh you don't know what you're doing. So I can just get away with doing what I want! I've got your number sista!..... FINE! I'll do it. Cereal? lol
Yep, and I know them all by name, and most of their personalities. It is a whole lot, and it would be nice to cut that number by a few, but that is how things go sometimes. We don't own all of them, just the majority.

So I'm at the beach right now. And on Friday we're going riding on the beach like we did last year. Can't wait. ;D
And I found another riding place farther south that allows you to ride through lots of water and much more beach. So we might end up going there too. Splee. (:

So this past week has been great. While I was away at the beach, Shannon rode Sarge for me so he wouldn't become too out of shape. So that was good. Then last Saturday we took the horses to green hill to school XC. And he was amazing! He only refused, maybe, 3 or 4 things he's never done before. I was impressed. He jumped the log, big log, little red house, slanted brush, ditch, and banks all without hesitation. He refused the mulch mound... I'm not sure why really but whatever. hah. AND we jumped this huge flower box. It was tall and wide. Definatly the biggest thing either of us has ever jumped. I was impressed. (: I did fall off however. It's tradition that I always fall off at green hill. haha. Sarge fell to his knees after we jumped the double up bank so I tumbled over his head. But we were both okay. And I love how he always dodges me when I fall off to makes sure he doesn't step on me. Then he stops and looks at me like "oh, I sorry". haha. <3

So I just joined, and I'm going through the disheartening period of not being able to post instantly...
I don't have any horses myself, but for the past 9 years I've worked on and off (it's a seasonal job) at a Girl Scout barn. In the spring and fall I'm a wrangler, and in the summer for the past few years I've run the equestrian-based leadership training program. I pretty much love it!
We have 25 horses in the spring/fall, and 35 during the summer. We give trail rides from May through October, and various levels of lessons in the summer. We mainly ride Western, but the highest levels of riders also get to try English and bareback.
Our horses are leased from a lady who leases to camps all over the Midwest. They're a wide variety of breeds, ages, experience levels, and conditions. We have horses just bought at auctions, horses who have worked at camps all their lives, horses who probably had great owners at some point... Most of them are grade, but we have a few registered quarter horses and paints.
I've got a few favorites, which change from year to year depending on who comes back to us in the spring. My current favorite is a liver chestnut pinto (just a smallish splotch of white on his side) 5 year-old gelding named Baxter. He's a bit spooky, but nothing that can't be worked through with some patience. Because of that (and his short attention span), he's a strictly staff horse, but I think with some experience he'll make an awesome horse for kids too some day. Right now, he's the horse I'd plan on buying if I came into some money and land! I have loads of pictures of him and the others... Way too many to post!

Best horse forum ever. It was down for a while so some of the members haven't returned yet. But it's still awesome. P:

Just a little update. Had a show last Saturday. Got 5th out of 15 with Jolly. Sarge just did 2 jumper rounds and only had 2 refusals (well, 3 actually but the first was my fault).
My favorite picture:

I got a job at a Thoroughbred farm! Just in the office to start, but still. They have an ungodly number of horses, and everything is just beautiful. Plus it pays well, and is only five minutes from school.

Haha, I've occasionally thought about looking for a more active horse forum, but I've never really found any place I like. Don't really have much time for chatting anyway, usually, but I'm still curious which other horse forums other people go to. XD

Woow, Runky, Sarge seems to have come such a long way considering how things started out.
And hi everyone else too!
So where the heck do you guys go online these days to chat horses?
This place seems proper dead. Sometimes I miss it.
I'm hella drunk currnetly *fails on several levels* but sometimes it'd feels like it¨d be nice catching up with people again.
