My cat got outside about six hours ago and I just got him back inside. We live in the woods, so there's no telling what animal he may have come into contact with. Since I've got him back in, he's been foaming at the mouth, his eyes have been watering, and he's been licking his lips a lot like he has something in his mouth bothering him. I did some reading, and that sounds a lot like rabies, but......

1) He seems perfectly fine other than those symptoms. He's walking around, getting in the window, letting me pet him, etc.

2) The mouth foaming has stopped. He's drooling a bit, but it's not foamy anymore.

3) I looked for bite marks, and he hasn't got any that I can see.

There are NO vets around here, so I'm basically on my own. Does this sound like rabies? Could it be something else? What should I do?

I would be very careful it could possibly be rabies and you don't want to get it. I would quarantine your cat and try to find a vet it is crucial that you take him.

It is more likely that the cat got something stuck in his mouth or throat, or ate something that made him sick. Rabie symptoms do not develope overnight.
I would strongly suggest to get him to a vet and tell the vet of any symptoms (pale gums, watery eyes, drooling, sleepy, cranky, excessive thirst, appetite, etc.
Do not wait, even if the cat appears to be better, as if he ate something toxic it could still be in his system. Good luck. I hope everything is fine.
