<b>I have a budgie named Izzy and I have had him for about a month. The pet store said he was too young to tell gender, but judging by books, I think he is a male. I also have two finches downstairs, and he seems to chirp very loud when he hears them. That is about the only time when he chirps is when he hears other birds. He barely ever moves and only really moves to eat. If we put our hands in the cage, he will freak out and flap his wings madly. The cage is definitly big enough for another budgie, but I'm not sure if he needs one. What do you think? He seems pretty lonely... but I want to make sure before i get another one that it is nessassary. Thank you for your help!

THATS the exact same situation im in. I'm trying to tame my budgie though. I heard that its harder to tame it when theres two budgies in the same cage. How do I tame my budgie and what do i use to convince it to trust me?

Hi,
I will not have another bird and put them in the same cage. But i will have another bird in a different cage for the time being. I cannot imagine what will happen if i put 2 birds together and they start to fight, i think that would be a very horrible fight and would be very difficult to catch and separate them.
I would suggest having another bird in a different cage and let know them each other's existence first. I wouldn't take any risk about this. Just a thought. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif

it is up to you if you want another budgie they are group animals and in the wild live in flocks of 2-300 so they are better off with a mate but if you talk to and try pearch and finger fraining it and pay attention to it alot it will be fine also if you dont want it to talk you could add a mirror this makes the bird think its reflection is another bird and it will be fine also if you just put your hand inside the cage and leave it there the bird will settle down after a while when it does bribe it will millet spray and lettuce plus hard grapes not squishey ones (they give them the runs)if you want another budgie go ahead and get one but when i intorduced my tame budgie who i had had for 2 yrs with wild ones it forgot ALL what i tought it and now bites you when yoou go near it ! that is the only problem but if you stick to it enough the 2 birds could be tamed but will fight over who likes you the most and will get the treat first. visit my site below for more info.

I'm glad your budgie situation is solved. I had one for a long time. He was exceptionally social. He actually groomed(picked dead scales off of)the female iguana I had at the time. He would also regurgitate seeds on her head, too(yuck). If let loose, he would often fly into other lizard cages and just sit there next to them. I bought a young lovebird for him, and he would just love it and feed it. Sadly, he died 2 years ago. But, not without rubbing off his caring nature on the lovebird - who still carries on the tradition of doing the rounds that my budgie did. Now, my lovebird has bonded to a pigeon and has just accepted an abandoned cockatiel into his little group.
These things didn't just happen overnight, though. It took many months before introductions and acceptance came about. But, I think they get the idea after a while.

Ray, I just found your old post about your birds grooming your iguana so now I have to ask a question. For a while now I've been considering adding a budgie to my lizard cage. The cage is screened and very large (approx 5'x3'x5') and the only thing in there is my little collared lizard and a nice big piece of branchy driftwood. Temperature is nice...not hot, never cold. Very fine sand on the bottom. Not worried much about lizard hurting the budgie or vice versa. Is this a crazy idea???
