Nope sorry!!! It's a rat with a similar color of the Degu!!! A Degu has a much bigger head to and is shaped more like a small rabbit!!!:D

What Exactly is a Degu?

Here is some info...

More recently the consensus has been that it is an aberrant rodent more closely related to the chinchilla or the cavy, with which it shares certain similarities, although the latest generic research does seem to suggest that it is not a rodent at all, but a lagomorph and therefore more closely akin to rabbits, hares, and pikas.
Classifying (organisms) into strict zoological groupings is largely a man-made discipline and there will always be a few species that cannot be so conveniently placed.

And from another source....

A Degu is a small Rodent with tweed brown coloured hair. They are classified as mammals related to Guinea pigs but many people now believe that they are in actuality closer in relation to rabbits.

I always thought they were pretty cute

I agree. They are very cute! I'm 11 years old, and I was
wondering if 1 would be a good pet for someone my age.
I have had 5 hamsters, 2 dogs, 2 goats, 3 cats, 20 fish,
and 2 guineapigs, so I know how much responsibility, and
time pets can take. Please write back ASAP. :frosty:

Of course reading up on them to make sure it IS what you want can't hurt. But I'm sure you've already done that :girl:

How long to Degus live? Just wondering! :wavey:

There are actually many different opinions on this matter. It really depends on the health of the degu and diet.. But on average, again, a healthy degu can live from 5-8 yrs.. Hard to beleive yes, but the longer the better. :girl:

I don't believe age matters in pet ownership, it's attitude that counts. I've met adults that couldn't be trusted with a goldfish(I'm 12), yet at age 11 I was trusted with a hedgehog by Dawn Wrobel (People at the hedgehog board know about her, she happens to live in my area) and at age 12 I was offered a very twitchy rescue parrot by an old couple who found him but didn't have time for him. (I might just take him, but it's too early to know). The thing I'm trying to say, is, if someone just has an innate skil with animals, age doesn't matter.

I have a chance to get one, but I'm not gonna. THe only pet shop that has them, dosen't handle them at all. Thay have 6 of them living in a 10 gallon tank! Way to small for 6! I'd think it was even to small for one! But any way, they never handle them, they are basically wild. I asked to hold one, and when the girl was getting one out for me, they were all super frightened, and when she finally caught one, it was squeaking really loud, and trying to escape. I didn't want to hold it after that. I feel bad for them, I don't think they are in the best health either.

I am getting two in a week. They are hard to find in NYC, but I think I managed.

What can you tell me about their behavior?
