I know degus love dust baths but do all degus like it? When I give my degus a dust bath they hardly do anything and always want back into the cage right away. Is this something I should be worried about? is there anything that would make them use the dust bath more or do they really even need the dust bath? :weyes:

:EL: Of course Degus need their dustbaths! ( and they love it too! ) :flippy:
U should try putting the dust bath thing ( or whatever u use ) IN their
cage, because they might feel less frightened if their in their home!

I have a bowl (a small dogs food bowl) with sand in placed in the cage all the time. I just regularly change the sand and clean the bowl. My degus love it and when they want to they go and have a clean.
I don't think they like to be 'cleaned' by someone, put the dust bath in the cage, and the rest is up to them!

Hi Kooky,
The degus will jump in the dust by themselves, you canŽt force them to bathe. IŽm sure youŽll enjoy watchingthem once they are mot afraid of the bath anymore. If you leave the bath in the cage, you need to change the sand/dust on a regular basis since they will start using it as their toilet. Degus in the wild (Chile) do that so that each member of their group has the same smell. It helps them bond. There is nothing wrong in leaving the dust bath in the cage but make sure that you change it on a regular basis otherwise it will get sticky and smelly.

Is there any certain sand I should get for their dust baths?

I was wondering as well is there is any sand I should avoid for my Degus. At the moment I am using Sepolite and I would like to know if this is OK for them

Sepolite is fine for degus. You can give them any type of dusting clay that is suitable for chins. I would only advise caution if your degu has sensitive/dry skin, as frequent dust bathing can aggravate it.

I have been giving my Dugus regular dust baths and they seem to love them :)

my degus usually love to dust bathe, but when they dont, I pour a little dust on top of them when they're in the 'dust pit'. Then they roll around and clean up
