I read a lot of posts on this forum about how owners have had to give up their pets because of vet costs, due to injuries and disease.

Has anyone ever considered buying pet insurance?

I live in the UK and I can insure two rats for only £8/$11 per month at http://www.exoticdirect.co.uk. If my rats become sick they get the best medical attention possible.

How much do you spend on clothes, the movies and fast food every month? I am not sure about other countries but it would cost me just £2/$3 per week to make sure my pets are looked after. Insurance even covers you if they go missing and you have to organise search parties etc.

Worth a thought.

Im not sure if pet insurance is a practical for small animals, in the US at least. I have looked briefly into it when I was planning on getting a FeLV positive kitten, and it wouldve cost me about $50 or more a month depending on the company and plan. Considering how short the lifespan of rats are, and how most people have more than a few rats, I think it might not be possible for most people here.

HOWEVER, that doesnt mean you cant save up money on the side on your own for the vet bills. I agree, little things we spend our money on daily can easily pay for varous vet fees, and you dont have to be a millionaire to provide all the medical care needed for your rats. It is just a matter of being prepared, knowing your priorities (ie. lives of your rats vs. new outfit?), and understanding that sometimes love isnt enough to save your pets.

Pet Insurance that covers ANY pet including exotics such as rats, snakes, mice, chins, gerbils, etc. And EVERY licensed vet accepts it. You can either sign up on the site or call. Its pretty cheap too, you can either do it monthly or annual. And they give you multi pet discounts.
