View Full Version : Somehow a cat got in.....

Somehow, one of my cats managed to get into my room where I keep all of my small animals(this room is super guarded, I don't know how this happend) and tortured one of my dwarf hamsters. It's state of health isn't looking too bright. If it lives to the morning, I will have it put to sleep, but I highly doubt it, it looks like she's fading away. I know you guys are probably gonna bash me for this, but before you do, let me say this: I have no idea how this happened, and I had no intention of letting this sweet little creature get hurt. :(

Ok, you can bash me now if you want

I'd like to add one more thing, please do not be angry at, or blame the cat. It was only his instincts.

SapphireWolf:

I have no intention of bashing you or your cat. It was an accident, albeit, a tragic one. I personally will never own a cat while I own mice or other small pets. I have heard too many sad stories such as yours. I had a good friend who's teddy hamster escaped and her cats killed it. Cats are very intelligent creatures that will constantly try to figure out ways to get to small animals. Even if they don't the scent of cats can put added stress on small pets. Your post here can be a warning to all who have larger pets. Thank you for posting. Has a vet looked at your hamster? Or is she too far gone? Again, I'm very sorry you and your hamster.

I took her, and he said she has a chance to live. I have to get pedialyte and water into her every hour or so. One of her legs is messed up very badly, it's kind of splayed out to the side, it's something that he said "only time will heal." She still dosen't look to good though, but I will try all that I can

Thanks everyone, she took in a good bit of her mix, I just pray that she's going to live. I'm gonna try to get a litle baby food into her. I don't think she's doing to good though. SHe just sits in one spot with her eyes closed. I also feel bad for her tank mate. She is lonely without her sister :(

I'll pray for your dwarf hamster. I'm glad you had a vet look at her, and that she does have a chance. I hope for the best. Please keep us informed here.

Obviously no one will blame the cat. YOU are the one to blame.

As far as I'm concerned cats should not even be in the same house as rodents, and you saying "SOMEHOW a cat got in" is totally unacceptable. It did not "somehow" get in; it got in as you did something wrong.

And so it begins. And go ahead, I deserve it. My animals are my life, and now this happens. So go ahead and beat me down, I've already done it to myself enough, now it's someone elses turn

I think SapphireWolf has been punished enough by having this happen to her precious pet dwarf hamster. I know she loves her hamsters and to have this happen has to hurt. I don't feel bashing or attacking her will accomplish anything. I hope your hamster is improving. Please let us know.

I also wanted to ask if dwarf hamsters make good pets. I'm thinking of a long haired teddy hamster again. I heard dwarf hamsters are more difficult to handle and tame.

My hamster is doing better, She is walking around and eating her normal food again.

And I really like dwarf hamsters(I keep Campbells dwarfs), I think they make very good pets. Of all my dwarf hamsters, I only have one that is hard to handle, and bites (Her name is Cujo. I got her from a lady who didn't hold or play with her, now she's wild. I'm making progress with her though, she's beginning to trust me) All my other ones though, are sweet as can be. You just have to hold, and play with them a little every day, this helps keep them tame and used to people. If you don't handle them enough, they will turn wild again. They are not hard to care for either, it's pretty much like taking care of a syrian. Either dwarf, or syrian, I find them both to be wonderful little creatures. Just make sure wherever you get your hamster from, that they handle them so that they are tame if you get them. I hope this help you. Tell me what kind of hamster you get if you choose to get one!

SapphireWolf:

I'm relieved and happy to hear that your dwarf hamster is improving. I hope she has a complete recovery.

Thanks for the information regarding dwarf hamsters. I've seen them in stores and really like them. Right now it is a toss up between a long haired teddy hamster and a dwarf. I'm not going to rush into it though. Do dwarf hamsters need a companion or are they okay living alone?

Well Zouave, aren't you the judgemental one? Where do you get off berating people for any little thing that goes wrong with their hamsters? They post on this site to get advice on problems they have, not to listen to you sactimoniously preach about what bad and immoral and despicable people they are. How dare you criticise people like SapphireWolf for what was obviously an accident. And its not the first time I've seen posts by you telling people that they or their little kids are malicious and evil because they didn't know too much about looking after or playing with a hamster.

You may have a lot of hamsters but that by no means whatsoever makes you an expert. And you most certainly are no expert on human psychology if you assume small innocent children who just want to play are 'malicious' and 'evil'-as I've seen you refer to a member's toddler in a previous post. Children are curious-thats how they learn about the world.

People like you really make my blood boil. You'll discourage people from logging on here to ask for advice which could really help their hamsters when it comes to important things like their health as it seems sites like this are the only source of information for a lot of people.

I don't post here very often but I'd just read one too many of your ridiculous replies.

SapphireWolf-I hope your little ham is doing well-you sound like a caring and considerate owner and people like Zouave could stand to learn a little thing called compassion from you.

And before you wonder-I have a hamster myself who just happens to be the happiest, healthiest, cutest little hamster in the world and I love her dearly.

Thats all I have to say.

Well, I try to have mine live in pairs, but it's not necessary. They'll do fine on their own. I have one male that lives alone(He's the only male out of his litter,so he has to live alone, or he'll get his sisters pregnant), and Cujo lives alone(She dosen't enjoy the company of others)

[QUOTE=LaineyLoo]I agree LaineyLoo. If he want;s to say stuff like that he should just leave this site because he'll make other people not want to come.

I hope that your little one gets better.
I have two cats and three hamsters so i know that sometimes people give you a hard time about it. There was nothing you could have done to prevent it but you are doing everything you can now to help your baby and that is what matters.

by the way, Zouave is completely judgemental and does seem to think he's an expert in the rights and wrongs of the world. (in my opinion)
Most people that i have spoken to have cats and rodents, there is no problem with that.
Zouave, god forbid something accidental happens to one of yours. This board is not to judeg people and put them down. Saphire did nothing wrong.

That's what I think too. My uncle had to watch one of my hamsters and he had a cat. The cat got in, but thank god the cat couldn't get him!

It looks like my baby couldn't take it, she just now died :( But with death comes new life, one of my dwarfs just gave birth. Well, I'm going to post a memorial for her, bye te way, her name was Moey. Thank you everyone for your support, I'm forever grateful to you all.

I'm very sorry to hear this. How disappointing since it looked like she would recover. I know it is some comfort to have a new dwarf hamster come along. I know it is always hard to lose them. I just lost my Frostie to wet tail recently, and it hurts. I know we will meet the pets we loved in this life at Rainbow Bridge.

Sorry for your loss but cats and hamsters don't mix! Cats are predators and will smell out a hamster and hunt it.It's their instinct they are not to blame.I have hamsters and a Budgie who flies free in the room I wouldn't dream of letting a cat into the house, even though my niece really wants a kitten, they just don't mix , cats hunt rodents and birds.

I know that everyone means well saying that cats are predators and will hunt your hamsters but that just isn't true!. I know that their natural instinct will lead you to beleive that but mostly everyone who says that doesn't even have a cat.
I speak from personal experiance, my cat is trained to NOT hunt the hamsters. She knows better. There have been times whem Lola (who passed away recently) did get out and she was running freely in the house before i noticed she was out, cat didn't touch her. This is not a nonhunting cat, she hunts house mice and bugs. So it is possible.
Don't worry Sapphire i'm totally on your side. It was an accident, accidents happen. Dogs maul children....no ones making a stink about having kids and dogs.

Crystal Im so sorry for your loss of Moey. It was a terrible incident but you cant blame your or the cat. The cat was following its instincts, and you didnt know so therefore, couldnt do anything. We know you love your animals, so we know that the security must have been tight. God bless you sweetie.

Also I have a cat and 3 hamsters and they get along fine. It is in fact, Ozzie who chases my cat Emma. Shes terrified of them, so I know she'll stay away.

So sorry to hear about your loss, its terrible when pets die, my guinea pig died 2 weeks ago and I still think about Pika a lot. I know hes in heaven now running happily in the grass with other pets, and my other hams that passed away..
I hope everything goes well for you, here a little poem, hope it makes u feel better..

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.
