:angel2: Hi all

We just got a new little black bear hamster we call Job because somebody brought him back because they didn't want him...I can't imagine why, he's a darling.

Can somebody out there help me a bit...I don't know a thing about raising a hamster. (Job is 6 months old) I have a dog and a guinea pig who are very happy and healthy.

I am concerned about this thing called "wet tail". I was reading about it here in the forum. What should I look for?

Today was his first day with us and we have been as quiet as possible to help him get used to his new home.

Any pointers anybody can give would really be appreciated.

Also, if you could send any replies to my email address:

Thank you so much!

Some signs of wet tail are a runny stools, and your hamster would have a wet bottom. Black bear hamsters is just another name for Syrian hamsters. They are solitary, so they should always be kept alone. Hamsters live for about 2-3 years. I hope this helps you. If you have any more questions, I'm sure the nice people here will help!

Well at six months he is an adult,they are nocturnal,sleeping during the daytime.You can buy a good hamster mix from a good supermarket or pet store,you can also feed small bits of carrot,broccoli,apple,grapes a few times a week.There are a lot of good sites on the net just do a search for hamster care.

Read a lot of threads; they will give you plenty of ideas.

I have 14 hamsters and have posted many photos (look for those threads if you wish). Taking care of one should be easy!

Give them some big tubes to run through; a big wooden hamster house (or something similar) to sleep and nest in;
a big wheel (Comfort Wheels or Wodent Wheels are best with an 8 1/2 inch diameter solid wheel); and let them out once a day to explore something - perhaps a play bin with new things to explore and a little hamster mix for them to forage.

Be careful of escapes! They are good at it.

What to feed them you likely can find on this site. It is a long topic. But feel free to read posts and articles online and then come back with a more specific question.
