Thanks, I heard a lot of storys that dwarf hamsters are mean and bite a lot. Are theese true? My mom thinks they are so she might not let me get one. I can buy one by self and save Poe's old tank. I heard they can fit though some bars. Is that true too? Do they escape real easy? I'm full of questions!

Hi, I'll help you! Well, I've heard that they bite alot too, but mine don't(only one of them does, but she's old and blind so she has a reason) Mine might not bite though because I raised them myself. But I think if you get a young one, it would be better because it will be easier for him/her to bond with you, and with that said, he'd probably be less likley to bite you after that. If you do get one, try to get it from a breeder. If you get it from a breeder, it will probably be nice because usually they breed for temperment(and colors too) If you buy it from a petstore, they usually aren't nice because the pet store people probably never handle them, and that is so crucial with these little hamsters. You have to spend a little time holding them each day, because if you don't handle them enough, they forget the human touch and may become wild. But I'm not saying that all petstores don't handle their animals, just the majority of them probably don't. I really like getting small animals from the petsmart in my area. They handle their animals regularly, so there pretty used to people. But you can decide on where you get your hammy from, I'm sure you'll pick a nice one! Now to the cages, I used to keep my dwarfs in cages, none of them ever squeezed out before(my cage bars were sorta close together though.) But If the bars are to spaced out, they probably will. I don't keep mine in cages though, now I keep them In 10 gallon tanks. You could probably fit 3 dwarf in a 10 gallon, but I only keep 2 per tank(so they can have more room). Usually, you can keep them in pairs(or small groups, but pairs are probably best), but sometimes you'll get a dwarf that just prefers to be alone. I hope all od this helps you out, and if you have any other questions, go ahead and ask! I'm sure others will help you out too, goodluck!

This one pet store (Rick's) close to my home gets only dwarfs and they get them from a local breeder. I would prefere to get them from the breeder, but would that be okay? ( I love this petstore! I get all my supplys there and they will take care of your animal when you go on vaction. I was there once and they had theese really fat, old bunnies. If they were for sale then I would of gotten them.) I don't know if they handle them.
I got my first Syrian hamster from a petstore down in Flordia where they never held them. He is so sweet and only bit my brother once. (He dropped him.) My second Syrian hamster I got from Petsmart.
Smokey was my first hamster and he was in a cage with about fifty other hamsters. (Males and females.) He had bite marks all over him and one of his eyes wouldn't open. I was deterimend to save him. Before I moved away they seperated the males and the females, but there was still about fifty in each cage. They kept them in like a thirty gallon glass cage. (It had no lid.) They had a great supply of beeding, treats, toys, and cages, but they tortured the hamsters. About every minute two (or more,) hamsters got in a fight. Smokey is completey fine now and he is the best hamster in the world.
Poe was in a cage with one other hamster and he also had bite marks. I don't get why pet stores do that because they hurt the hamsters.
At Rick's they have theese Robo hamsters. I think they're just some type of drawf, but I haven't asked. Do you know?

I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!

Yep, they sure are a type of dwarf. I don't have that kind of dwarf, but I'd like a few if I had room for them. Now to your question, I think it would be alright if you got one from you pet shop. About the handling thing, dwarf different than syrians when it comes to that. A syrian can go for a while of not being held, and still be nice when they are finally handled (if they had previous handling before). Now a dwarf, if you don't handle them for a good while, they start to forget human touch, and when that happens, they start becoming wild. And when you finally do try to handle them, they are gonna give you a pretty hard bite(Dosen't matter if they were handled before or not, they just forget afrer a while) That's why it's important to hold them often. WHen ever I get an animal, I ask if I can hold them first to see how they react to me. I usually expect a bite the first time I hold any animal cause they are probably gonna be scared at first. If they are alright after that, I usually get them. But if they keep on biting me and biting me, (and super hard bites too) then I just don't get them. If you'd feel like it, you could ask the pet shop for the breeder's phone number(if they will give it to you), or you could ask when he/she will be bringing in more hamsters so you could talk to them personally. I hope all goes well for you

I've heard they have to be handled and gently played with daily from a young age to prevent biting.

Good luck whatever you do. If they do bite, remember they are just scared, not really mean.

I have three dwarf hammies and i think they are really nice. One of mine is a biter but i use a pair of gardening gloves to handle him and try to get him a little tamer. I tell everyone they should look at their local shelters for hamsters, ours always have bunches even though you don't really associate hamsters with shelters. i know that right now there are three cambells dwarfs at a local shelter.....
