Hello All,

I am new to this board. I like this site. So homely and from the messages i read, there sure are friendly people around. http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, just want to share this.
I been to a pet shop recently and saw 3 beautiful and gorgeous pigs.

They have been to guinea pigs shows and have won lots of competitions. The owner adore them a lot too. Can't remember the breed of her pigs though. http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif But they are really really beautiful and have shiny furs.

Of course, i was envious of her pigs and thus, i went over to chat with her. She told me that besides good quality pellets and all the neccessary vitamin C and what-so-ever, she strongly encourages corns to be given to guinea pigs. She said that corns are good pigs and have nutritous values. Also the corns help to trim their teeth too. She introduced her pigs corns since Day 1 she got them. Now they are 3 years of age and are really really huge in size and are really tough pigs. But she mentioned that it still soley depends on guinea pigs owners whether to give corns to their pigs or not.

The owner has been keeping a pig for 9 years and say to bring up, her pig has just passed away due to old age. http://petshub.com/ubb/frown.gif That pig of hers has also won lots of competitions on guinea pigs shows.

She also introduced me some guinea pig pellets that she gave her pigs. I forgot the brand's name. I haven't buy them yet, as she was so kind that she asked me to bring my pig down to her to "test-eat" her pellets. If my pig likes it, then i buy from her. Isn't she wonderful?! http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif

Anyway, i got home with some newly-bought corns. I cut the corn and soaked them in water for a couple of hours to eliminate any chemical on it. And i gave to my piggy. WOW!! My pig was jumping in joy and rushing to the corn immediately... I was amazed with my pig's reaction. http://petshub.com/ubb/eek.gif But was glad that my pig eats the corn.

*Goodness* I nearly lost my fingers when my pig came rushing for the corns. http://petshub.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Do let your pig give corns a try. Maybe your pig might like it, or maybe not.

Also, will let you know more about the pellets she recommended if i were to buy from here.

Hugs and Kisses to your pigs... http://petshub.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My pigs love corn too..I cut a cob into four or fives chunks and put it in there once in a while. However, too much corn can be bad because it is very rich and can pack extra weight onto the pig.

Thanks for your reply. My guinea pig is quite slim for the moment. And my vet advised that a bit extra weight will put my pig in a right guinea pig's weight.

Glad to know that your guinea pigs take corns too. Take care and have fun with your guinea pigs.

Nice knowing you.

Hello everyone, Please remember piggies do die a lot from choking on things like corn and some seeds. So feed them in moderation and check on the lovelies when feeding those sorts of treats. Here's to a good variety of foods. Good health and love to all piggies!! http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif http://petshub.com/ubb/smile.gif

HI again!! Here's a PS: I have been afraid to feed corn but I've seen the hard indian corn like the kind you see with gourds in both rabbit and piggie cages? Is that the type of corn or are you using fresh uncooked corn??? Thanks for any info!!!!

Didn't try the hard corns that you mentioned before. But as far as i know, those are given to rabbits and pigs to gnaw on and also to trim their teeth. Not too sure if it is filling or not.

I give my pig the fresh uncooked corns. I soak the corns first, this way it softens and pigs chew them better. I even peel the corns out and place it in a plate to feed my pig. This way, my pig don't have to wrestle with the corn just to get a corn seed out.

My pig loves corns a lot. Ever since i started giving, his coat become more glossy.

But just like what Trin said, too much corns can pack extra weight onto the pig, unless the pig really need to gain some weight like mine.

Do give it a try. Maybe your pig might be new to corns in the beginning, just give it a little more time. You might be surprise to know your pig's reaction.

Of course, be prepared to be rejected by your pig.

Hear from you soon...

Hello Berne,

WOW! http://petshub.com/ubb/eek.gif I am very impressed with the petshop's guinea pigs! I do give corns to my guinea pig too, but he isn't very keen on it at times. Very fussy. http://petshub.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

One of her guinea pig lived 9 years?!?! I am really very impressed and envious. Any secrets in her pigs long-life?
